Notes: Abstract A Portuguese female, aged 47 years, who had emigrated to Spain, was admitted to the hospital in 1991 for pontine haematoma. The patient, four siblings and her father were affected by a peripheral neuropathy, indicating autosomal dominant inheritance. The patient presented in the 2nd decade with sensory and motor neuropathy beginning in the lower extremities. Alternating constipation and diarrhoea, and urinary incontinence became uncontrollable. She had to be colostomised, and, eventually, confined to a wheelchair from the age of 43. Neurological examination showed bilateral facial involvement, and severe signs of sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy, and later right hemiplegia. There were abnormalities of atrial rhythm and left bundle branch block. Computerised axial tomography and magnetic resonance images demonstrated left-sided pontine haemorrhage. Nerve conduction studies revealed severe diminution of motor conduction velocity and absence or reduction of amplitude of sensory and motor action potentials. Inanition and a respiratory infection led to her death. Clinical diagnosis was type I familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP). Postmortem examination demonstrated amyloid deposits in peripheral nerves, including spinal roots and cranial nerves, leptomeninges, thyroid, breasts, heart, adrenal glands, kidneys, intestines, pancreas, and meningeal and some pontine vascular structures. Advanced pontine haematoma was verified. Cerebral haemorrhage usually occurs with cerebrovascular amyloidosis, but exceptionally with FAP. A minority of patients presenting with CNS haemorrhage showed arteriovenous malformation or embolism [Da Silva Horta and Dias Coelho (1960) Arch ‘de Vecchi’ Anal Patol Med Clin 31=163–172]. However, amyloid deposition in some small pontine vessels could have played a role in the pathogenesis of haemorrhage in the present case.

Notes: Summary Cerebral biopsies of three patients aged 22, 18 and 16 years with myoclonic epilepsy contained Lafory bodies. Two were a brother and sister of consanguineous parents. The Lafora bodies occurred in most neurons but not in glial cells. The ultrastructure of these bodies showed a fibrillar and granular material in the perikaryon and neuropile. In some neurons small Lafora bodies were delimited by a double membrane, suggesting that in early phases they have a membrene which disappears when they become more developed. Other non-specific neuron alterations are described. One of the cases presented in the liver PAS positive bodies of a structure different from the Lafora bodies.

Notes: Abstract  The response of a Wilderness cherty loam series soil to repeated dosages of metals (as sewage sludge) using a two-step sequential extraction procedure was investigated. Variations in metal content between amended and control soils were related to organic matter, clay content, and clay mineralogy. Of the four metals investigated, Cu was found to accumulate in the top 20 cm of amended soils; Pb and Zn were present in even smaller amounts with respect to the control soils, and Cr concentrations were unaffected with respect to both depth and amendment. None of the metals indicated accumulation in deeper (〉20 cm) parts of the soil profile. Overall, results suggest that the metals remobilize in the top 20 cm, being readily uptaken by the fescue grass growing in this lot. Precipitation of insoluble forms of metal into deeper parts of the soil profile was proven unlikely based on the distribution of metal concentrations throughout the profile.

Notes: Ground beef with 26.3% fat was cooked by browning/draining (BD), browning/rinsing (BR), and an oil-extraction method with (OA) or without (ON) meat broth added back. BR caused the most reduction of total fat and cholesterol, whereas ON and OA yielded less cooked meat than BD and BR. ON and OA cooked samples, compared to BD and BR samples, contained more polyunsaturated fatty acids and nonheme iron and had higher TBA values unon extended storage at 4°C. Trained sensory panelists rated BD or BR cooked ground beef more intense in positive flavor note (“cooked beef/brothy”) than ON or OA meat. Likewise, consumers tended to prefer meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, and chili prepared with BD or BR cooked ground beef to those prepared with ON or OA cooked meat.

Notes: Experimental characterization of magnetic anisotropy, coercive field, and anisotropy dispersion of sputtered Fe/CoNbZr and Fe/Ag/CoNbZr sandwiches were carried out by transverse biased initial susceptibility (TBIS) measurements with a magneto-optic Kerr effect at both film/air and glass/film interfaces. Three different behaviors have been observed depending on the range of magnetization fluctuation. The results indicate that Fe grains play a fundamental role in the type of the dispersion (long range or short range). The results obtained from the coercive field and from x-ray diffractograms agree with those obtained by TBIS. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a study of the effect of short-term storage on the hatching rate of common carp Cyprinus carpio and tench Tinca tinca ova in vitro in various extenders at 21° C under aerobic conditions, the best extender for 30 min storage for common carp appeared to be Dettlaff 1. This gave the same hatching rate as controls without extender (55%v. 56%). For 60 min storage of ova, the best extenders were Dettlaff 2 (24% hatching rate) and Dettlaff 3 (30%), but hatching was significantly lower than in the control (58%). In carp ovarian artificial fluid (CAF) extender, the hatching rate of common carp ova was also high after 10 min, but decreased to 12% after 30 min. In tench, the hatching rate of ova increased after 10 min storage in Dettlaff 5 extender (44%) compared to the control (41%) without extender. However, it was significantly lower after storage in Dettlaff 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and CAF extenders for 20, 30 and 60 min, compared to controls. Malformations (10–50%) were observed in the tench second control groups without extender after 10, 20 and 30 min storage of ova.
