Notes: Summary Sensitivity to insulin in vivo was studied in six Type 1 diabetic patients without residual insulin secretion and without clinical insulin resistance, and in eight non-diabetic subjects, using the euglycaemic insulin clamp technique. Insulin was infused for four periods of 2 h sequentially at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 mU · kg-1 · min-1; for each insulin infusion period the steady-state plasma free insulin levels were comparable in the diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. The mean ±SEM plasma glucose concentration was 4.9±0.03 mmol/l in the diabetic subjects (coefficient of variation of plasma glucose values: 5.7±0.7%) and 4.6±0.01 mmol/l in the control subjects (coefficient of variation: 5.1±0.6%). Insulin-mediated glucose disposal was lower in the diabetic than in the non-diabetic subjects at the two lower insulin infusion rates (mean±SEM = 2.03±0.27 versus 4.8±0.64 mg · kg-1 · min-1 at the first insulin infusion rate, p〈0.01, and 5.59±0.59 versus 8.36±0.61 mg · kg-1 · min-1 at the second insulin infusion rate, p〈0.01). However, insulin-induced glucose uptake did not differ significantly between the two groups at the third and fourth rates of insulin infusion. These results show that impaired insulin sensitivity in Type 1 diabetes is dependent on insulin concentration.

Notes: Abstract  Hydrogeologic data of 455 water wells comprising geologic logs, water qualities, and aquifer test results are analyzed to determine hydrogeological characteristics, water quality, and sustainable yield of the groundwater resources of Cheju volcanic island. The groundwater of the island occurs in unconsolidated pyroclastic deposits and clinkers interbedded in highly jointed basaltic and andesitic rocks as high-level, basal, and parabasal groundwater under unconfined conditions. The total storage of groundwater is estimated at about 44 billion m3. The average transmissivity and specific yield of the aquifer are at about 0.34 m2 s–1(29300 m2 day–1) and 0.12, respectively. The average annual precipitation is about 3.39 billion m3, of which 1.49 billion m3– equivalent to 44.0% of the total annual precipitation – is recharged into aquifers, with 0.638 billion m3 year–1 of runoff and 1.26 billion m3 year–1 of evapotranspiration. Based on a groundwater budget analysis, the sustainable yield is estimated at about 0.62 billion m3 year–1, equivalent to 41.6% of annual recharge. A low-permeability marine sedimentary formation (Sehwari formation), composed of loosely cemented sandy silt, was recently found to be situated at 120±68 m below mean sea level. If the said marine sediment is distributed as a basal formation of the freshwater zone of the island, most of its groundwater will be of parabasal type. So the marine sediment is one of the most important hydrogeological boundaries and groundwater occurrences in the area.

Notes: Abstract The experimental arrangement to produce the slow positrons with the Giessen 65 MeV LINAC is described. Some results of obtained slow positron yields are shown. At the present a maximum intensity of 1.05×108 slow positrons per second is measured at the detector place. Actually we are optimizing different parameters of our experimental facility.

Notes: Summary  Intracranial lesions may compromise structures critical for motor performance, and mapping of the cortex, especially of the motor hand area, is important to reduce postoperative morbidity. We investigated nine patients with parietal lobe tumours and used functional MRI sensitized to changes in blood oxygenation to define the different motor areas, especially the primary sensorimotor cortex, in relation to the localization of the tumour. Activation was determined by pixel-by-pixel correlation of the signal intensity time course with a reference waveform equivalent to the stimulus protocol. All subjects showed significant activation of the primary sensorimotor cortex while performing a finger opposition task with the affected and unaffected side. In five patients the finger opposition task additionally activated the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex and the supplementary motor area (SMA). Extension and flexion of the foot, additionally performed in two patients, also activated the sensorimotor cortex, in one case within the perifocal oedema of the tumour. Tumour localization near the central sulcus induced displacement of the sensorimotor cortex as compared to the unaffected side in all patients with a relevant mass effect. The results of our study demonstrate that functional MRI at 1.5 T with a clinically used tomograph can reproducibly localize critical brain regions in patients with intracranial lesions.

Notes: Allergies are chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, lung and gut. Atopic dermatitis represents the main manifestation of the skin, and bronchial asthma is the leading condition in the lower respiratory tract. Both conditions are due to an inappropriate immune response to harmless environmental antigens (or allergens). There is growing evidence for a close interaction between the immune and nervous system in the pathophysiology of allergies. Recent evidence from our group indicates that neurotrophin production including nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are elevated in those organs. Both, residential cells including airway epithelium and migratory cells including macrophages, T cells and eosinophils serve as important sources. The effects of increased neurotrophin production are bidirectional. On the one hand, they control sensory nerve fibres in terms of function, neuropeptide synthesis and survival. On the other side, neurotrophins also serve as important survival factors particularly for inflammatory cells such as eosinophils, T cells and macrophages. Utilizing the model of segmental allergen provocation of mild to moderate asthmatic patients, it has been shown that neurotrophins prevent sufficiently apoptotic cell death of lung, but not blood eosinophils. In addition, they augment the ongoing inflammatory reaction. The functional interaction between neurotrophins and immune and nerve cells has been extensively studied in both human and mouse models of experimental allergic asthma. In the latter system, the crucial role of the pan-neurotrophin receptor p75 has been investigated in p75 NTR–/– mice. Furthermore, NGF transgenic animals have been utilized to assess the contribution of NGF. The role of BDNF on differentiation and function of B-lymphocytes has been identified in BDNF–/– mice. In conclusion, our data support the concept that neurotrophins mediate immunological and neuronal plasticity within the neuro-immune network of allergic disease in the lung and skin.
