Quand le nid est soumis à des perturbations expérimentales, les colonies qui survivent peuvent émigrer par voie souterraine et construire un nouveau nid à quelque distance. Ce déménagement peut s'observer même en l'absence de perturbations visibles. De tels déménagements paraissent fréquents et pourraient être des événements normaux dans le développement de la société.
    Notes: Summary Cubitermes fungifaber, a humus-feeding termite from the forest of the Ivory Coast, builds an earthen nest by successive additions. When the nest is experimentally damaged, the surviving colony frequently migrates some distance away, by a subterranean route, and builds a new nest. This relocation sometimes occurs without any noticeable previous disturbance. We present evidence of the frequent occurrence of such relocations, which could be normal events during the development of the society.

    Notes: Abstract. Objective: To investigate whether interleukin-13 (IL-13) can affect arachidonic acid metabolism and phagocytic activity of normal human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN).¶Methods: Normal human PMN (1 × 106 cells/ml) were incubated with different concentrations of IL-13 (0.1–10 ng/ml) for a variety of times (30–120 min). Phagocytosis and intracellular cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were detected by flow cytometry. The expression of COX-1 and COX-2 mRNA was detected by RT-PCR. The concentration of PGE2 in the PMN cultured supernatants was determined by EIA.¶Results: We found that IL-13 at an optimal concentration of 1 ng/ml significantly enhanced COX-2 gene expression and PGE2 production (121.57 ± 22.17 pg/ml in IL-13 stimulation vs. 73.16 ± 11.72 pg/ml in controls) by PMN. In addition, IL-13 stimulated PMN phagocytosis via increased complement receptor type 1 (CR1) and type 3 (CR3), but not IgG Fcγ receptor type 3 (FcγRIII). The cytoplasmic neutral esterase activity of PMN was also enhanced by IL-13 stimulation for 24 h.¶Conclusions: These results suggest that IL-13 can stimulate PMN and modulates the inflammatory reactions via the cyclooxygenase pathway.

    Description / Table of Contents: Resume L'influence des reproducteurs sur la production de soldats a été étudiée chez deux espèces de termites supérieurs,Nasutitermes lujae (Nasutitermitinae) etCubitermes fungifaber (Termitinae). Dans les deux espèces, le couple royal stimule la production de soldats. Il se forme en moyenne 2 à 3 fois plus de soldats dans les élevages lorsque les reproducteurs sont présents. ChezN. lujae, le roi est aussi stimulateur que la reine. Les reproducteurs agissent à deux niveaux: ils induisent les mues et les orientent vers le type soldat. On peut maintenant affirmer que chezN. lujae, où une phéromone inhibitrice de soldats a été récemment mise en évidence, la proportion de soldats résulte de l'équilibre entre les actions stimulatrices des reproducteurs et les actions inhibitrices des soldats. La nature hypothétique de l'action stimulatrice royale est discutée.
    Notes: Summary The influence of the reproductives on soldier production was studied in two species of higher termites,Nasutitermes lujae (Nasutitermitinae) andCubitermes fungifaber (Termitinae). In both species, the royal pair has a stimulatory influence on soldier production. The soldier molts are two to three times more numerous when workers are reared with the reproductives. InN. lujae, the king and the queen have an apparently equal stimulatory influence. The reproductives act on both induction and orientation of the molts toward the soldier type. It can be now claimed that inN. lujae, in which the existence of an inhibitory soldier pheromone was recently evidenced, the proportion of soldiers results from the balance between the stimulatory influences of the reproductives and the inhibitory influences of the soldiers. The hypothetical nature of the royal stimulatory influence is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  The birthdates of GABAergic amacrine cells in the rat retina were investigated by immunocytochemistry using anti-GABA and anti-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) antisera. The ratio of co-localization of GABA to BrdU increased gradually from embryonic-day 13 (E13) and showed a peak value on E18 in the central retina and on E20 in the periphery. After birth, until postnatal-day 3 (P3), a few co-localized cells were observed in the inner nuclear layer (INL). However, in the peripheral retina, co-localized cells were observed in the INL and ganglion cell layer until P5. Our results suggest that the birthdates of GABA-immunoreactive cells vary, depending on cell-type and that there is a temporal lag in the GABA-immunoreactive cell production in the peripheral retina relative to the central retina.

    Notes: This study presents a new approach that can stabilize effectively l-ascorbic acid in water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) double emulsions. Basically, the behavior of l-ascorbic acid in the aqueous phase was observed, considering its molecular deformation. Then, it was found that the stability determined in the aqueous phase by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that the collapse of ionization of l-ascorbic acid played a crucial role in protecting the molecular deformation. Then, the stable aqueous system was incorporated into the internal aqueous phase of the double emulsions. From the PLC analysis, it was observed that the l-ascorbic acid in an appropriate system showed high molecular stability for a long time. Moreover, in the measurement of in vitro skin permeation, the l-ascorbic acid stabilized in this study showed considerable skin permeation ability, indicating its potential applicability in pharmaceutics and cosmetics.

    Notes: There are two distinct viewpoints on the association of the inheritance of apolipoprotein E (APOE) alleles and the age of onset distribution of Alzheimer's disease (AD): genetic and phenotypic expression.     Notes: The presence of oxygen in silicon-germanium can have a significant effect on the sintering, microstructural, and transport properties of these alloys. A neutron activation study was performed to follow the total oxygen content during the preparation of mechanically alloyed n-type Si-20 at. % Ge alloys using either fine powders, polycrystalline Czochralski chunk, or single-crystal float zoned starting materials. The alloys were prepared with a nominal composition of Si0.747Ge0.187(GaP)0.016P0.034. The total oxygen concentration was measured in the starting materials, after 6 h of mechanical alloying in a helium environment, after hot pressing, and after a 3 h, 1100 °C heat treatment in fused silica ampoules. Alloys that contained oxygen levels in excess of 2.0 at. % exhibited low carrier mobility and low thermal conductivity, whereas those that contained less than 0.6 at. % oxygen possessed high mobility and thermal conductivity. The microstructure, as observed by optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy, was found to differ greatly with oxygen content as the low oxygen alloys showed relatively large, well-defined grains and the high oxygen alloys showed evidence of poor sintering and limited grain growth.
