    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Objectives. The purpose of this study was to check the precision of the Dräger vaporizer model 19.3 when filled with three different preparations of isoflurane. Methods. Six Dräger vaporizers model 19.3 calibrated with forene were filled with forene (Abbott), isoflurane (Lilly) and isoflurane (Pharmacia); gas output was measured by infrared absorption (Irina, Dräger) at vaporizer settings of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 5.0 vol%, starting with a fresh gas flow of 2 l/min followed by 4, 6 and 12 l/min. Thus each of the three isoflurane preparations was checked in six different vaporizers and with four different fresh gas flows. Results. Within the concentration range used in clinical practice there was no significant difference in the delivery of the three isoflurane preparations. Each of the six vaporizers produced a controllable and predictable concentration of the three preparations. Conclusion. Vaporizers of Dräger type 19.n calibrated with forene deliver the same predictable concentration of the volatile anaesthetic when filled with isoflurane from Lilly or isoflurane from Pharmacia instead of forene and may be used without impairment in patient safety. In addition, no specific calibration with one of the new isoflurane preparations is required.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Untersucht wurde die Genauigkeit von mit Forene kalibrierten Isofluranverdampfern der Baureihe 19.3 der Fa. Dräger bei Füllung mit den neuen Präparaten Isofluran-Lilly und Isofluran-Pharmacia; als Vergleichssubstanz diente Forene der Fa. Abbott. Die Prüfung erfolgte an 6 Vaporen bei Konzentrationseinstellungen von 0,2, 0,4, 0,6, 0,8, 1,0, 1,5, 2,0, 2,5, 3,0, 3,5, 4,0 und 5,0 Vol.-%; zuerst bei einem Fluß von 2 l Luft/min, dann in weiteren Meßreihen bei 4, 6 und 12 l/min. Die Isoflurankonzentrationen wurden mit Infrarotabsorptionstechnik gemessen (Irina, Dräger). Insgesamt wurde jede Prüfsubstanz in 6 verschiedenen Vaporen bei 4 unterschiedlichen Einstellungen des Frischgasflusses untersucht. Bei der Verdampfung der 3 Isofluranpräparate unterschiedlicher Hersteller ergab sich im klinisch üblichen Dosierungsbereich kein signifikanter Unterschied. Diese Aussage einer für alle Prüfsubstanzen gleichen Narkosemittelverdampfung läßt sich auf alle Dräger-Vaporen der Bauart 19.n übertragen, da die Konstruktionsunterschiede lediglich das Dräger-Stecksystem „Interlock“, einen Dichtungsschutz und die Überlaufsicherung betreffen. Aus der vorliegenden Untersuchung ergibt sich, daß mit Forene kalibrierte Dräger-Vapore der Baureihe 19.n die neuen Präparate Isofluran-Lilly und Isofluran-Pharmacia mit gleicher Konzentrationsgenauigkeit abgeben und daher ohne Gefahr für den Patienten hiermit gefüllt werden dürfen. Eine Neukalibrierung der Verdampfer mit diesen Präparaten ist nicht erforderlich.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch einen Fragebogen mit differenzierter Auswertung wurde ermittelt, daß 22% der an der Orthopädischen Klinik Gießen in den Jahren 1967–1971 erfolgten Hüfttotalprothesenoperationen aus der Sicht der Patienten als nicht ausreichend gelungen betrachtet werden können. Die Beseitigung des Schmerzes erwies sich dabei als entscheidendes Kriterium. 12,6% der Patienten geben keine Besserung gegenüber dem Zustand vor der Operation an.
    Notes: Summary 22% of total hip arthroplasties which have been performed in the Orthopedic University Hospital Gießen (FRG) during the years 1967–1971 according to the statement of patients can not be considered as sufficient. This could be ascertained by question-forms with differential evaluation. The relief from pain proved to be the most important criterion. 12.6% of the patients did not state an improvement comparing their condition before and after operation.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of toxic components isolated from asparagus tissue onFusarium spp. and other soil microorganisms and their effects on the susceptibility of asparagus toFusarium crown rot was investigated to determine what role allelopathic substances may play in the asparagus ecosystem and in asparagus crown rot decline. Dried sterilized asparagus crown and root tissues were incorporated into pots of 3-month-old asparagus seedlings with and withoutFusarium inoculum. Root tissue alone and treatments in which crown and root tissues were combined with theFusarium inoculum showed significant reduction of plant growth over nontreated controls. Root and crown tissues were partitioned with polar and nonpolar solvents and bioassayed on pregerminated asparagus and cress seeds. Inhibition of radicle growth was confined to the polar fractions. Further separation with paper chromatography gave several fractions that were inhibitory to radish, cress, tomato seed germination as well as inhibitory to growth of pregerminated asparagus seeds. Crude extracts from roots and crown residues were bioassayed on many different fungal isolates on Petri plates and were found to inhibit the growth of oomycetous fungi. Extracts from the roots were found to be more active than extracts from other portions of the asparagus plants.

    Notes: Abstract Potential allelochemicals from aqueous extracts of dried asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) roots were isolated and characterized. Active fractions separated by HPLC included ferulic, isoferulic, malic, citric, and fumaric acids. Soxhlet extraction of the residues also produced phytotoxic caffeic acid. Although none of these compounds, when applied singly, was active enough to account for the phytotoxicity of asparagus extracts, their combined effect might be additive or synergistic. An extract from lyophilized fresh root tissues contained a fraction that was one order of magnitude more toxic than any compound obtained from the dried roots. The most active component was isolated by TLC and characterized by [1H]NMR as methylenedioxycinnamic acid (MDCA). This compound provided severe inhibition of curly cress (Lepidium sativum L.) root and shoot growth at concentrations of 25 ppm or above.
