    Notes: Summary Psammoma bodies in meningocytic whorls were investigated by electron microscopy. In some whorls, connective tissue fibers were seen and membrane-bound vesicles were contiguous to degenerated cells. Some small vesicles, 0.1 to 0.5 μm in diameter, were outlined by plasma membrane (matrix vesicles), other larger ones, about 1 to several μm in diameter, were invested by a thick wall (matrix giant bodies). Mineralized deposits were frequent in these vesicles and occasionally large masses of mineralized connective tissue fibers (psammoma bodies) were seen. Analysis of the material in the mineralized vesicles and fibers, using an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer, showed that both calcium and phosphorous were evident and hydroxyapatite was substantiated using an X-ray differactometer. Psammoma body formation in the meningocytic whorls may represent degeneration in some whorls of the central cells which contain connective tissue fibers, producing cell debris such as membrane invested vesicles. Subsequently, calcification occurs in these vesicles, and the mineralization process extends to neighboring connective tissue fibers. The calcified mass forms a psammoma body.

    Notes: Abstract Tau accumulating as paired helical filaments (PHF) in Alzheimer's disease brain is considered to be abnormally phosphorylated on distinct sites. To compare the phosphorylation state of tau-positive neuronal inclusions among diverse neurologic diseases, we have probed these lesions with three well-defined PHF/tau monoclonals, C5, M4 and tau 1, that most likely recognize three proline-directed phosphorylation sites in PHF-tau. In Alzheimer's disease brain all three monoclonals intensely immunostained intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, neuropil threads, senile plaque neurites, and “pretangle neurons” in a phosphorylation-dependent manner. They also stained, in the same manner, Pick bodies in Pick's disease, and neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads in various tangle-forming neurologic diseases. In most of these diseases (including Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and Alzheimer's disease) astrocytes and oligodendrocytes were found to contain tau-positive inclusions which showed the same immunocytochemical characteristics. Thus, the widely occurring tau-positive inclusions share common phosphorylation characteristics irrespective of underlying diseases or cell types.

    Notes: Summary Transition probability matrices of amino acid substitution are calculated for hemoglobin, cytochrome c, fibrinopeptide, immunoglobulin and lysozyme, and for protein as a whole. When these matrices operate on the column vectors which represent the contemporary amino acid frequencies of the corresponding proteins, amino acid compositions change so as to increase their entropy. The entropy increase of amino acid sequences in proteins need not be interpreted as a random process. If we assume instead a selective process favoring randomness in protein, the biased nature of the genetic code can contribute to non-randomness in the DNA sequence. The entropy increase of protein as a whole is interpreted as a diversification of protein, and is reflected in DNA base sequence of higher organisms.

    Notes: Abstract Both lifetime and angular correlation of positron annihilation have been measured for a series of synthetic zeolites for which the void structures are known fairly well. All of the zeolites had long lifetime components and a narrow momentum component which are ascribable to o-Ps and p-Ps annihilations in the voids, respectively. The correlation between the width of the p-Ps narrow component and the size of the largest voids showed a remarkable agreement with a theoretical estimate based on the spherical potential well model. The measurement of p-Ps momentum thus appears to be prospective as a tool to determine the size of voids of materials. The lifetime of the long lifetime component, on the other hand, showed a poor correlation with the void size even from a qualitative viewpoint, suggesting that factors other than the simple void size effect are dominant in determining the o-Ps lifetimes. Discussion is made on the cause of the different dependences of o-Ps and p-Ps annihilation parameters on the void size. It has also been found that p-Ps fraction is always larger than one third of the o-Ps fraction in all the zeolites studied. A discussion is presented on this point, too.

    Notes: Abstract.  We have measured positron lifetime and Two Dimensional Angular Correlation of Annihilation Radiation (2D-ACAR) distributions of Floating-Zone grown (FZ) Si specimens containing divacancies (V2) with the definite charge states, V0 2, V-1 2 or V-2 2 from room temperature to about 10 K. These charge states are accomplished by an appropriate combination of dopant species, their concentration and irradiation doses of 15 MeV electrons with reference to the currently accepted ionization level of divacancies. The positron lifetime of the negatively charged divacancy increases with temperature, while that of the neutral divacancy shows little change with temperature. The positron trapping rate, obtained from lifetime and 2D-ACAR measurements, increases markedly with decreasing temperature. This is found not only for the negative divacancies but also for the neutral divacancy. We need a model which explains this temperature dependence. The 2D-ACAR distribution from positrons trapped at divacancies shows nearly the same distribution for the different charge states, which differs considerably from the case of As vacancies in GaAs studied by Ambigapathy et al. We have observed a small but definite anisotropy in the distribution of trapped positrons in V- 2 using a specimen containing oriented divacancies.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic resonance phase-shift-induced velocity mapping is a powerful technique for measuring in vivo blood velocity and flow non-invasively. Using this method we examined dimensions, distensibility, blood flow and its regional distribution in the abdominal aorta in 10 normal volunteers. Data were acquired at three levels of the descending aorta. Thirty percent reduction in diastolic cross sectional area was observed in the caudal direction between these levels. Total blood flow (ml/min) in the abdominal aorta at the three sites was 4094 ± 1600, 2339 ± 910 and 1602 ± 549 respectively. Flows in the coeliac trunk, superior mesenteric artery and renal arteries were also calculated. The net flow in the abdominal aorta above the coeliac trunk was persistently forward, while there was considerable backflow (13% of total instantaneous flow) below the renal arteries during early diastole. Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive technique for quantitative assessment of blood flow in the abdominal aorta and its main branches.

    Notes: Summary  The authors report two cases of multicentric osteolytic lesions in the occipital bone without any history of head trauma. The excisional biopsy of the first case revealed that the lesion was multicentric but a continuous cavity with the subarachnoid space through various sizes of dural defect, and the cavities were covered by arachnoid lining. Together with the previously reported similar 5 cases, the characteristic common feature is multicentric osteolytic lesions in the occipital bone at advanced age without marginal sclerosis. “The cluster of arachnoid diverticula in the occipital bone (CADOB)” is probably the most appropriate term for these non-traumatic lesions with the following characteristics: elderly patients, occipital bone, midline, multiple, intact outer table, nonsclerotic margin and without history of trauma. Operation may not be indicated because of its non-progressive and benign nature.
