Notes: As computer simulation increasingly supports engineering design and manufacture, the requirement for a computer software environment providing an integration platform for computational engineering software increases. The potential benefits to industry are considerable. As a first step in the long-term development of such a system, a computer software environment has been developed for pre- and post-processing for unstructured grid-based computational simulation. Arbitrary computer application software can be integrated into the environment to provide a multi-disciplinary engineering analysis capability within one unified computational framework. Recognising the computational demands of many application areas, the environment includes a set of parallel tools to help the user maximise the potential of high performance computers and networks. The paper will present details of the environment and include an example of, and discussion about, the integration of application software.

Notes: A general philosophy is presented in which all the modules within the computational cycle are parallelised and executed on parallel computer hardware, thereby avoiding the creation of computational bottlenecks. In particular, unstructured mesh generation with adaptation, computational fluid dynamics and computational electromagnetic solvers and the visualisation of grid and solution data are all performed in parallel. In addition, all these modules are embedded within a parallel problem solving environment. This paper will provide an overview of these developments. In particular, details of the parallel mesh generator, which has been used to generate meshes in excess of 100 million elements, will be given. A brief overview will be presented of the approach used to parallelise the solvers and how large data sets are interrogated and visualised on distributed computer platforms. Details of the parallel adaptation algorithm will be presented. These parallel component modules are linked using CORBA communication to provide an integrated parallel approach for large scale simulations. Several examples are given of the approach applied to the simulation of large aerospace calculations in the field of aerodynamics and electromagnetics.

Notes: Abstract  This paper presents a method for simulating, in the time domain, the scattering of electromagnetic waves in piecewise homogeneous media. The method employs an explicit Taylor–Galerkin approach, implemented on a general unstructured triangular grid, with the electric and magnetic fields approximated in a continuous piecewise linear fashion. All boundary and material interface conditions are weakly applied in an integral form, following a characteristic decomposition of the solution. A number of simple examples, for which exact scattering width distributions are available, are included to demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed procedure.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new CMOS current feedback operational amplifier (CFOA) with rail to rail swing capability at all terminals. The circuit operates as a class AB for lower power consumption. Besides operating at low supply voltages of ±1.5 V, the proposed CFOA has a standby current of 200 μA. The proposed CFOA circuit is thus a versatile building block for low voltage low power applications. The applications of the CFOA to realize a transconductor/multiplier cell, MOS-C differential integrator, MOS-C bandpass filter and MOS-C oscillator are given. PSpice simulations based on 1.2 μm level three parameters obtained from MOSIS are given.

Notes: Abstract The CMOS Imager presented integrates a 2D photoreceptor array with a nine input analog processor on the same focal plane. The analog processor is fully programmable, performing multiply-accumulate operations. A VLSI implementation of spatial convolution operations performed on images is presented. A modified photoreceptor is presented that is based on current mode for signal transmission, thus decreasing the effect of noise on the transmitted signal and increasing the sensitivity per decade. A novel decoding scheme was used to decode the required set of photoreceptors to be presented to the analog processor. Thus only one processor unit is needed whose inputs depend on the time state. A prototype system was fabricated that incorporates 15×15 pixels in a 2×2 mm2 using a 2 μm double metal, single poly process.

Notes: Summary Sixteen hundred commercial broiler chicks (Cobbs) were used to investigate the food value of blood meal in broiler production under Sudanese conditions. Seven experimental diets, containing various levels of blood meal, were fed to groups of chicks from 0 to 9 weeks of age and the performance was compared with those on a control diet containing 15 per cent meat meal. The results indicated that 6 per cent blood meal can be used in broiler diets without growth rate being adversely affected.

Notes: Abstract Novel differential current conveyor building blocks are defined. CMOS realizations of these blocks are then given. One of the proposed conveyor circuits is seen to be insensitive to the threshold voltage variation due to the body effect. The properties of the differential current conveyors are shown to be suitable for VLSI applications employing MOS transistors operating in the ohmic region. This is demonstrated by realizing four quadrant multiplier cells, current mode and mixed mode continuous time MOSFET-C filters based on the proposed blocks. PSPICE simulations indicate the excellent performance of the differential current converyor circuits.

Notes: Unstructured tetrahedral grids are generated using a new, very efficient procedure based upon the Delaunay triangulation. The generation procedure is extremely fast, having the capability to generate large grids in minutes on workstations. To maximize this computational performance, a new form of adaptivity has been developed involving the use of sources placed within regions of the domain which require further grid point resolution. A source has a position and a specified grid point density. An error indicator is used to find the elements within the grid which require refinement. Within such elements sources are placed with specified grid point densities which are proportional to the amount of refinement required. The grid generation procedure is then invoked and a grid generated whose grid point density is controlled by the sources. The resulting grid is thus refined in the regions identified by the error indicator as requiring greater resolution. The paper discusses the generation process and emphasizes the new solution adaptation capability. Several examples of the approach are given, including aerospace compressible flow simulations over realistic configurations.

Notes: The solution of problems involving the scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by perfectly conducting obstacles is considered. The governing equations are Maxwell's equations, which are expressed in a conservation form. The solution is then obtained by modifying a technique which was applied originally to the solution of the compressible Euler equations on a mesh consisting of an unstructured assembly of linear triangular elements in 3D. The computed solution can be used to determine the radar cross-section of the scatterer.

Notes: The solution of high-speed transient inviscid compressible flow problems in three dimensions is considered. Discretization of the spatial domain is accomplished by the use of tetrahedral elements generated by Delaunay triangulation with automatic point creation. Methods of adapting the mesh to allow for boundary movement are considered and a strategy for ensuring boundary recovery is proposed. An explicit multistage time-stepping algorithm is employed to advance the flow solution. A number of examples are included to illustrate the numerical performance of the proposed procedures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
