Notes: Energy-selective electron impact ionization of laser-produced photofragments together with time-of-flight mass spectrometry is a general and sensitive means of studying primary photodissociation processes. Low-energy electrons ionize photofragments without the production of background fragment ions from dissociative ionization of the parent molecules, and the time-of-flight mass spectral peak shapes provide direct information on the photofragment recoil anisotropy. In the first application of this combination of techniques, we have studied the photodissociation of methyl iodide at 229.4 nm, the short-wavelength end of the A band, in order to assess the contribution of transitions to the 1Q1 state to the absorption profile. The results presented here show that I(2P1/2) is the primary iodine–atom product and that the transition is largely parallel [β=(1.6±0.1) for I(2P1/2)] at 229.4 nm. These data together with previous photofragmentation results suggest that excitation to the 3Q0 state dominates the entire A band absorption profile.

Notes: The dynamics of the F+H2 reaction have been investigated in a high resolution crossed molecular beam study. Differential cross sections and kinetic energy distributions were obtained for each HF vibrational state. The v=1 and v=2 states were predominantly backward scattered, but substantial forward scattering was observed for HF (v=3) over the range of collision energies accessible in our apparatus, from 0.7 to 3.4 kcal/mol. The results strongly suggest that dynamical resonances play a significant role in the reaction dynamics of F+H2 and that resonance effects are most prominent in the v=3 product channel. Quantal reactive scattering calculations on F+H2 predict that the v=2 channel should be most strongly affected by resonances. This discrepancy is attributed to inadequacies in the potential energy surface used in the calculations, and several modifications to the surface are proposed based on the experimental results. Other features of the reaction are also discussed, including the integrated partial cross sections, the effect of H2 rotation, and the reactivity of F(2P1/2).

Notes: The F+D2 and F+HD reactions were investigated in a high resolution crossed molecular beams experiment at several collision energies. The DF product from both reactions was predominantly backward scattered although some forward scattered DF(v=4) was observed at the highest energy studied. The HF angular distributions from F+HD were quite different, showing considerable forward scattered (v=3) and no other identifiable structure. These results disagree with classical trajectory studies, which predict only small variations in the product angular distributions among F+H2 and its isotopic variants. They agree, however, with the predicted dependence of dynamical resonance effects on isotopic substitution. The results therefore support the conclusions drawn in the previous paper regarding the role of dynamical resonances in the F+H2 reaction.

Notes: Background Reduced levels of interferon gamma (IFNγ) mRNA and protein have been detected in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of atopic asthmatics. IFNγ is secreted by TH1 cells while IL-4 and IL-5 are secreted by TH2 cells and an imbalance in the TH1/TH2 response may be responsible for atopic asthma. The gene for IFN4gM is located on chromosome 12; a region of the genome which has been shown in linkage studies to be associated with asthma. Objective To determine if there are any mutations present in the coding exons and 5’flanking region of the IFNγ gene in atopic asthmatic subjects compared with controls to explain the lower levels of this cytokine as an inherited, rather than acquired, factor in the asthmatic subjects. Methods The four exons and 5’flanking region of the IFNγ gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from genomic DNA of 265 individuals from a Western Australian and a Venezuelan population. The PCR products were examined by single strand conformational polymorphism and heteroduplex analyses to see if there were any changes in the DNA migration patterns which would suggest the presence of a sequence variation. Results The four exons and the 5’flanking region of the IFNγ gene were amplified from 265 individuals from two populations. Single strand conformational polymorphism and heteroduplex analyses did not reveal any mutations in the regions examined. Conclusions The gene for IFNγ appears to be highly conserved as no sequence variations were detected in 265 individuals. These results suggest that mutations of the IFNγ gene are unlikely to be a significant cause of an inherited asthma diathesis.

Notes: A high-current ECR source has been developed for oxygen implanters for use in fabricating separation by implanted oxygen (SIMOX) substrates. The new source has the following features: (1) high-current density (150 mA/cm2) and large extracted current (more than 200 mA), (2) stable and long lifetime operation (more than 200 h), (3) high O+ ratio (more than 80%), and (4) low-divergence beam. The improved performance is obtained by incorporating the following: (1) Localized high-density plasma generation at the center of the plasma chamber. (2) A newly developed multilayer window to satisfy two requirements: efficient coupling of the microwave with high-density plasma and high resistance to high-speed backstream electrons. (3) Optimized combination of plasma chamber length and axial magnetic field distribution. (4) Sophisticated compact magnetic circuit that yields the optimum magnetic field for obtaining high-density plasma. An industrial-version ECR source was developed for production use on EATON NV-200 implanters. The source was installed on an NV-200 and used to implant oxygen ions to Si wafers. Good performance compared to a duopigatron source was obtained in terms of beam transport efficiency and reliability of source operation.

Notes: We have constructed a versatile apparatus to study photoinitiated processes in molecular beams using a variety of generally applicable techniques. The instrument contains a pulsed, low-energy electron gun that delivers space-charge-limited electron beams into the ionization region of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The electron energy is tunable from 8 to 200 eV, and the electron energy distribution is relatively narrow (FWHM ∼0.3 eV), which allows us to ionize laser-excited species and their decomposition products selectively. We have used low-energy electron impact ionization and mass spectrometry to characterize molecular beams, to detect vibrationally excited molecules prepared by vibrational overtone excitation, and to detect primary photodissociation products in the presence of precursor molecules.

Notes: An ECR source has been built for production use on Eaton's NV200 oxygen implanter. It can be retrofitted in place of the duopigatron normally used on that machine. This article reports results of 200 continuous hours of operation of the source, producing 95 mA of O+ ions, on a special test stand which emulates the injector of the NV200. Currents up to 200 mA at 45 kV were briefly obtained on this stand, the upper limit being set by thermal capacity of the beam dump. The ECR source was installed on an NV200 and used to implant wafers at 200 keV. Its performance is compared to that of the duopigatron source under similar conditions.

Notes: Comparative studies of omeprazole and lansoprazole are scarce and even scarcer are comparisons of higher doses. Most of the comparative studies have assessed the effect of the two proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on gastric acid secretion or gastric pH. Few studies have compared clinical end-points such as oesophageal healing and symptom control.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To determine the clinical efficacy of omeprazole 40 mg daily as compared to lansoprazole 30 mg twice a day in symptom control of patients with severe symptomatic GERD.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Ninety-six patients who failed a standard dose of lansoprazole (30 mg once daily), were enrolled in a prospective fashion from three VA medical centres and were randomized to receive 6 weeks of either omeprazole 40 mg daily or lansoprazole 30 mg twice daily. Patients reported daily on symptom severity and frequency, antacid consumption and side-effects.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Forty-six patients received omeprazole and 44 lansoprazole. Although not statistically significant, there was a consistent trend of better symptom control in the omeprazole group for daytime and night-time heartburn and acid regurgitation. There was no statistical difference between the two groups in mean antacid consumption overall and at the end of each of the 6 weeks of the study. In addition, there was no significant difference in the overall frequency of side-effects between the two groups nor for each individual side-effect.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:Omeprazole 40 mg once daily is equally effective and tolerated as lansoprazole 30 mg twice daily in symptom control of patients with GERD.
