    Notes: Abstract Structural systems with longitudinal mass flow can be seen in belt-conveyers, running magnetic tapes and flexible manipulators, etc. Transverse vibration problems of flexible longitudinally extensible beams are considered as a special class of vibration problems of structural systems with longitudinal mass flow. The optimum design problem to control the dynamic response of such structural systems is very important from engineering and practical viewpoints, but until now it has not been the subject of much study. Based on the method of dynamic response analysis of extensible beams presented in the authors' previous studies, a method of sensitivity analysis of dynamic response is presented in this paper. Utilizing the obtained sensitivities of the response with respect to design parameters, such as mass flow velocity, tension and rigidity etc., a new optimum design method to control the responses of such structural systems is also presented.

    Notes: Abstract This work was designed to determine whether a plant culture method on non-solid media could be used as an alternative for inoculation of Acacia mangium with selected strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. A. mangium seedlings were grown and inoculated with Bradyrhizobium strain Aust13c and strain Tel2 in hydroponics, aeroponics and sand. Aeroponics was found to be the best system of the three, allowing the production of tree saplings 1 m in height after only 4 months in culture. Moreover, compared to plants grown in liquid or sand media, aeroponically grown saplings inoculated with Bradyrhizobium spp. developed a very high number of small nodules distributed all along the root system, resulting in an increase in nitrogen and chlorophyll content in plant tissues. We propose aeroponics as an alternative method to classical soil inoculation procedures for the production of hypernodulated legume tree saplings.

    Notes: Two-dimensional in-plane interface structures of highly epitaxial perovskite (La,Ca)MnO3 (LCMO) and (Pb,Sr)TiO3 (PSTO) thin films on salt-rock type MgO substrate were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Cross-section TEM studies revealed that both LCMO and PSTO films are good single crystal quality and have atomic sharp interface with respect to the MgO substrate with -6.4% and -6.2% lattice mismatch, respectively. Electron Diffraction Patterns (EDPs) of plan-view LCMO/MgO and PSTO/MgO interfaces exhibit double diffraction spots. An analytical approach was employed using double diffraction to study the two-dimensional in-plane interfaces of perovskite structure films on the salt-rock type substrate. The lattice mismatch near the interface regions was determined using EDPs of the plan-view interfaces and found to be -8.0% for LCMO/MgO and -7.14% for PSTO. Both latter values are larger than those obtained using cross-section TEM. Studies of the sharpness of double diffraction spots and plan-view high resolution (HR) TEM brought a conclusion that the PSTO film is well commensurate with the MgO substrate over large areas, whereas LCMO film is only locally commensurate with the substrate. These studies provide additional evidence to our previous observations that plan-view TEM of the interface is able to provide critical and valuable information that is lacking from the cross-section TEM analysis

    Notes: Adsorption of CO on ultrathin Cu films supported on a Rh(100) surface has been studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). At low Cu coverage (〈0.3 ML), CO on Cu shows a higher vibrational frequency than the gas phase CO stretching frequency (2143 cm−1). This blue shift is interpreted as arising from CO adsorption on Cu atoms and/or two-dimensional atom clusters with a small positive charge, i.e., Cuδ+n, formed via charge transfer at the Cu–Rh(100) interface. As the Cu coverage increases, the CO vibrational frequency for Cu–CO red shifts. On an annealed Cu overlayer ((approximately-greater-than)0.3 ML), the IR spectra show a sharp peak at 2095 cm−1 which is interpreted to correspond to CO adsorbed on well-ordered pseudomorphic Cu domains. CO adsorption on Rh(100) was found to be blocked by 0.6 ML Cu. For a high coverage of Cu (∼7 ML) annealed to 850 K, a peak at 2076 cm−1 is observed and identified as corresponding to CO adsorption on three-dimensional Cu clusters.

    Notes: The interaction of CO with a Rh(100) surface at 90 and 300 K has been investigated with infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Absorption bands due to the C–O stretch are found in both the linear and bridging regions at all coverages for both adsorption temperatures. For adsorption at 300 K, an ordered CO layer is formed at ∼0.4 monolayers (ML) as evidenced by a sharp, highly symmetrical, linear-CO band. At θCO〉0.45 ML, the reduction in intermolecular separation and increasing intermolecular repulsive forces in the CO adlayer are evidenced by the increased broadness of both the linear- and the bridged-CO bands. CO adsorption at 90 K yields a nonuniform adlayer dominated by island formation at θCO〈0.5 as indicated by peak splitting of the linear-CO band and the presence of a broad bridged-CO band. At θCO∼0.5, a highly ordered CO adlayer is suggested by the appearance of a highly symmetrical linear-CO band as well as the formation of a sharp c(2×2) LEED pattern. The presence of multiple components in the linear-CO band along with the drastic variations in the relative absorption intensities for both CO bands at coverages between 0.5 and 0.7 ML imply that the CO adlayer undergoes a phase transition within this coverage regime. These IRAS data are in agreement with the observed transition of a sharp c(2×2) pattern at θCO=0.5 to an ordered LEED pattern with a p(4×4)R45° coincidence structure at θCO=0.7. From a series of temperature-dependent IRAS measurement, it has been determined that the difference in binding energy of linear and bridged sites at θCO=0.2–0.5 ranges from ∼0.1 to ∼0.4 kcal/mol with the bridged-bound CO being the more stable species.
