Notes: Summary The effect of a selective irradiation of myelin by3H β-particles was studied by light and electron microscopic methods in guinea pig spinal cord. The animals were injected with [3H]leucine shortly after birth when the rate of myelin biosynthesis is high and sacrificed 130 days later. In spinal cord the radioactivity was mainly preserved in myelin because the half life of myelin proteins is much higher than that of most other CNS protein. As a consequence the irradiation dose in the white matter was much higher than in the gray matter. In myelin internally irradiated by3H β-particles within 130 days at a dose of 10 Gy no alterations could be detected either by morphological or by morphometric methods.

Notes: Summary A radioimmunoassay was used to measure the calmodulin content in eleven brain areas of the rat. Calmodulin showed an uneven distribution. Various cortical regions, striatum, hippocampus, amygdala and substantia grisea were highest in calmodulin content (15 μg/mg protein). Locus coeruleus, nucleus tractus solitarii (+A2 region) and A1 region, contained 7 μg calmodulin per mg protein and the cerebellum 4 μg/mg.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A study of the postmortem angiograms of the middle meningea artery with special reference to their anastomoses with the contralateral side is described. The study was made in 60 cadavers of both sexes in the age range 15–75 years, which were accepted unselected into the autopsy series of the pathological institute. Four different patterns of anastomoses in the region of the superior largitudinal sinus were observed: 1. Anastomoses in the outer layer of the sinus roof. 2. Anastomoses in the inner layer of the sinus roof. 3. Anastomoses, which run a little way in the outer layer of the sinus roof and then devinate to the inner layer in order to. run further as far as the contralateral side in the inner layer, orvice-versa. 4. Anastomoses in floor of the sinus. The so-called sinus arteries described byKiss andTarján in 1959 were looked for, but they could only be found in the wall of the superior sagittal sinus, and they simply bulged into the lumen. Other vessels coursed in the septum lying within the sinus. They were designated by us as “Septal sinus arteries”.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors describe the rare occurrence of a so-called Parasinus Transversus Dexter in an 82 year old man. This sort of dystropic cerebral blood pathway creates a potential danger of haemorrhage during intracranial operations, especially during diagnostic brain puncture. The knowledge of the position of such an abnormal sinus in the dura mater would seem therefore necessary before making burr holes in the skull and puncturing the brain.

Notes: A very-high-sensitivity magnetometer is described in detail. The sensitivity of the apparatus is typically of the order of 10−9 A cm2/(Hz)1/2, so that changes in magnetic moment of 10−10 A cm2 can be detected. The magnetic moment can be calculated by simulation of the measurement system. An example of a hysteresis loop is shown. The size of the sample is determined by electron microscopy. The physical limits of the measurement system are worked out and discussed.

Notes: Measurements of the reversible transverse susceptibility (RTS) were performed on BaFe12−x−yCoxTiyO19 single crystals with doping concentrations x≈y≤0.77 under different angles cursive-theta0 between the easy axis and applied field. For intermediate doping concentrations the occurrence of a peak in the RTS curve for cursive-theta0=90° indicates that the domain walls are not free to move. This assumption is confirmed further by the large component of the RTS being out of phase with respect to the excitation field HE. The phase angle of the initial susceptibility measured parallel to the easy axis becomes maximum at a characteristic excitation field value HE,C and a relaxation of the susceptibility is observed if HE steps from zero to a value larger than HE,C. Using the RTS curve for cursive-theta0=0 and assuming that the peak of the RTS is located at the same field strength as if the particle were single domain, the first-order anisotropy field HA=2K1/(μ0Ms) and the second-order anisotropy constant K2 can be determined. The values found this way are compared to results from magnetization-curve analysis and from other authors.
