Notes: Abstract Studies of a classical III–V semiconductor (InSb) doped with 3d magnetic ions (Mn2+, having a localized spin S=55/2) reveal some unexpected transport properties. It is found that the transition from the metallic to the low-temperature insulator phase occurs at an impurity concentration N Mn∼N cr=2× 1017 cm−3 and a temperature T〈T cr∼1 K. Under these conditions a giant negative magnetoresistance arises. The experimental results can be explained in terms of the onset of a hard Mott-Hubbard gap Δ in the impurity band formed by the shallow manganese acceptor in InSb at N Mn∼N cr. A model describing the gap formation is proposed.

Notes: Calculations are presented for the photoluminescence spectrum of InP/In0.53Ga0.47As superlattices doped with Si. When doping is confined to the inner barriers, the photoluminescence is dominated by transitions between Tamm states in the electron and valence bands, which contribute with an optical band at energies higher than the In0.53Ga0.47As band gap. These results are in good agreement with experimental observations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The equations of motion of a ten dimensional model based on the Chapline-Manton lagrangian, modified by higher derivative terms, are solved using six dimensional coset spaces with torsion. Minkowski space, anti-de Sitter, de Sitter and Einstein static cosmology with negative curvature are possible four dimensional cosmologies. In all case symmetry breaking schemesE 8×E 8→E 8×E 6 with chiral 27's ofE 6 can be obtained.

Notes: Abstract With the help of a variational method we apply the standard Coulomb + Linear potential to the analysis of mesons constructed from quarks of different mass. Fine and hyperfine splittings are discussed, with particular emphasis on their asymptotic behaviour. Striking differences in this behaviour are predicted to occur compared with the case of mesons built up from equal mass quarks, with the spin-orbit mixing force playing here a fundamental role. Such predictions may be tested within the bottom $$(b\bar u)$$ meson family. Our considerations are also extended to the strange and charmed mesons. Our model favours ak(O+) below theK * (1.430), and predicts a partial inversion in the ordering of theP-wave states of the charmed mesons $$(c\bar u)$$ .

Notes: Abstract We study the charmonium, upsilon and strangeonium systems with a linear+Coulomb potential, in the high α s regime. Our approach is based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation, in ladder approximation, and the most interesting conclusion of our work seems to be that it is not possible to fit these three families of mesons using the same set of values for the parameters defining the potential.

Notes: Abstract A non-relativistic potential model is applied to the study of light-meson spectroscopy. The general agreement between the predictions of the model and the data is good, but some resonances, among them the ε(1.300), ϕ(1.640) andS *(0.980), are not easily explained. Another potential source of problems concerns the situation of the 1D-wave states.
