    Notes: Abstract  The spatio-temporal pattern of expression for the Eph receptor tyrosine kinase, Cek8, was observed in normal chick embryos from H–H stage 6 to 23 by immunohistochemical techniques. Expression of Cek8 was already present in embryos at H–H stage 6, where it was located in the neural plate of the brain region, paraxial mesoderm, and the primitive streak. Regions expressing Cek8 subsequently increased during development to include the neural folds of the brain, rhombomeres 3 and 5, the caudal part of the neural plate, neural creast cells related to the formation of glossopharyngeal nerve ganglia, invaginated cells throughout the primitive groove and the epithelium of the rudiment of the gall bladder. Cek8 was also expressed in the mesenchymal cells of the pharyngeal arches, allantoic stalk and limb buds as well as in the areas surrounding the eye vesicles and nasal pits. Furthermore, cells in the tail bud progressing to the secondary neurulation expressed Cek8. Thus, the spatio-temporal patterns of Cek8 expression appears to have intimate relationships with tissue rebuilding, the maturation of differentiated cells, and the spatial organization of tissues. Consequently, it appears that Cek8 plays an integral role in the developmental events leading to the formation of a wide – though not inclusive – variety of tissues and organ systems.

    Notes: Abstract  Since inhaled fluoride is implicated in the acute respiratory failure, cytotoxic effects of fluoride on alveolar macrophages, primary target cells of inhaled toxicants, were investigated. The LC50 of sodium fluoride was estimated to be 0.41 mM, while 1 mM sodium chloride, bromide and iodide had virtually no effects on the viability of alveolar macrophages. Photomicroscopic observation revealed that nuclei of the fluoride-exposed alveolar macrophages were fragmented. The ladder formation was observed when DNA isolated from fluoride-exposed alveolar macrophages was electrophoresed in agarose gel. These results suggest that cytotoxicity of fluoride is associated with apoptosis in rat alveolar macrophages.

    Notes: Abstract  Although an excess intake of fluoride has been reported to cause skeletal fluorosis, very little is known about the mechanism of adverse effects of fluoride on bone. In the present study cytotoxic effects of fluoride were studied using the osteosarcoma cell line, UMR 106. The DNA ladder formation upon agarose electrophoresis and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining revealed that UMR 106 underwent apoptosis following exposure to 5 mM fluoride for 8 h. On the other hand exposure to A23187, a calcium ionophore, caused necrosis while co-exposure to fluoride and A23187 inhibited fluoride-mediated apoptosis in UMR 106. The proliferation of UMR 106 cells cultured for 6 days in the presence of 0.5 mM fluoride was significantly decreased compared to the control culture. The cytotoxic effects of fluoride were modulated by both the cell density and the pH of the culture medium. The fluoride-induced viability loss in UMR 106 was enhanced in culture of high cell-density and inversely correlated with pH of the culture medium. Enhancement of fluoride cytotoxicity at acidic pH was also observed in rat alveolar macrophages and RAW 264, a macrophage cell line. The results suggest that fluoride-mediated apoptosis and culture conditions, including pH of the medium, should be taken into consideration to evaluate toxicity of fluoride in vitro.

    Notes: Abstract In preterm neonates, the risk for intracerebral haemorrhage is linked to immaturity of cerebral autoregulation. The preterm's 2–5/min cyclic variation pattern of cerebral blood flow velocity is thought to reflect the degree of immaturity of autoregulation — a speculation to be tested. In a cross-sectional study 15 infants (gestational age 26–40 weeks, postconceptional age (PCA) 26–42 weeks, age 1–99 days were investigated. We performed a 10 min pulsed Doppler tracing on an internal carotid artery by means of a computer controlled 5 MHz Duplex device. Systolic velocity (Vs) was recorded pulse by pulse. After appropriate data transformation, in all infants the Fast Fourier Transform of the time course of Vs revealed the presence of a 2–5/min cyclic variation pattern (one sample z-test,P〈0.0001). There was no significant correlation between proportionate spectral power of the 2–5/min frequency band and either PCA (r=0.23,P=0.42) or age (r=0.41,P=0.13). Between 26 and 42 weeks PCA, the cycling phenomenon is constant thus not reflecting cerebral maturation, and its presence does not mean immaturity of cerebral autoregulation.

    Notes: Abstract A case of uridine diphosphate galactose (UDP-Gal) 4-epimerase deficiency was discovered by mass screening of newborn infants. UDP-Gal 4-epimerase activity of red blood cells from the patient was found to be remarkably low, i.e., 7.5% of the level in normal controls at comparable ages. The parents showed intermediate values between those of the patient and controls. The enzyme activity in a specimen of liver tissue obtained from the patient by needle biopsy revealed a normal value. Subsequently, two other families with the condition were found by mass screening and these individuals were found to be heterozygotes.

    Notes: The effect of the processing conditions of dolomite powders on the antiviral activity wasstudied against H5N3 avian influenza virus. When dolomite was fired in the ambient atmosphere, itdecomposed into MgO and CaO by two stages at different temperatures, namely into MgO+CaCO3at ca.1010 K and MgO+CaO at ca. 1070 K. Strong antiviral activity was observed after thecomplete decomposition into CaO and MgO. However, when the firing temperature exceeded1673 K, the antiviral activity was degraded. It was also found that the degraded antiviral activitywas recovered by sever ball mill grinding

    Notes: The millisecond pulsar 1620 – 26 in the globular cluster M4 exhibits an unusually large second derivative of the pulse frequency1,2, which together with the other pulse timing parameters yields the braking index of 4 × 107. To understand this extreme behavior of the pulsar rotation, we consider the effect of a superfluid-crust coupling in the neutron star interior on the crust rotation. The frictional coupling between superfluid and crust becomes unstable when the temperature of the star falls down below a critical temperature. Then, the frictional instability develops a limit cycle4 The temperature increase in a part of the limit cycle enhances friction between the crust and the superfluid so largely and accelerates the angular momentum transfer from the superfluid to the crust so rapidly that the crust rotation is even spun up. This rapidly growing friction can produce an extremely large second derivative in the crust rotation rate as observed in PSR 1620 – 26.
