Notes: Abstract Multiple coincidence rates have been measured using a detector system consisting of a Ge(Li) spectrometer and eight NaI(Tl) or eight liquid scintillators. Reactions induced byα-particles with energies of 51–55 MeV and 118 MeV12C ions are studied. The data are analysed to give the first and second central moments of the distribution of the number ofγ-rays feeding individual levels in the final nuclei. When these numbers are compared to spin distributions calculated with the statistical model code GROGI the relative importance of dipole and quadrupole deexcitation modes can be ascertained. In particular, in the122Te(α, 4n)122Xe reaction theγ-decay prior to the entry into the ground band is well described as a statistical process proceeding to 50% by dipole and 50% by quadrupole radiation. In the166Er(α,4n)166Yb and192Os(α,4n)192Pt reactions the relative amount of quadrupole radiation is larger and it seems that the dipole and quadrupole decay takes place via separate cascades. In the164Dy(12C, 7-8n) reactions the average multiplicity is independent of spin, suggesting that the nucleus forgets the spin of the entry state before the process enters into the ground band. In the176Yb(12C, 8n)180Os reaction, finally, the nucleus definitely retains memory of the entry state during the decay. In this last case the multiplicity measurement is combined with aγ-ray singles measurement to give an average excitation energy prior to theα-decay and the average moment of inertia characterising the decay of the high-spin states.

Notes: Abstract The levels in the ground band of184Pt are identified up to the member with spin 20 in an in-beam spectroscopy experiment on theγ-rays following the177Hf(12C, 5n)184Pt reaction. In contrast to the situation in the heavier Pt isotopes, where the 10+ to 12+ level spacing is very small, the transition energies in184Pt show a monotonie increase with spin. However, between spin 10+ and 14+ the moment of inertia grows quite rapidly and this appears to be reminiscent of the much more pronounced irregularity encountered in the isotopes of larger mass. This property of the moment of inertia is discussed within a model where twoi 13/2 neutron quasiparticles or twoh 9/2 orh 11/2 proton quasiparticles may be excited and coupled to the rotation of the core.

Notes: Abstract The data on high-spin rotational states in155Dy,157Dy,159Dy and161Dy are discussed within a model where a particle is coupled to a rotor with a variable moment of inertia. In this model there is often a definite improvement in the quality and stability of the fits to levels in the positive-parity band below spin 25/2 when the moment of inertia of the core exhibits a linear dependence on the square of the rotational angular velocity as compared to the situation where a linear dependence onI(I+1) is assumed. In the improved fits the empirical matrix elements of the Coriolis force exhibit a smooth and significant increase with decreasing moment of inertia. The rotational energies above spin 25/2 in the positive-parity band and above 19/2 in the 11/2− [505] band are understood within the present theoretical model if the moment of inertia increases more rapidly than the linear trend established at lower spin. In the 11/2− [505] band this increase follows rather closely the behaviour in the even nuclei whereas in the positive-parity band the curves are quite flat even beyond the point where the moment of inertia in the even nuclei exhibits a discontinuous or back-bending behaviour. The significance of this observation is discussed in the light of existing theories on nuclear moments of inertia.

Notes: Abstract The reactions159Tb(α, 4n)159Ho and159Tb(3He, 3n)159Ho have been used to populate states in159Ho. Gamma-ray spectra in single and coincidence modes have been studied. Assignments have been made for the bands built on the Nilsson states 7/2−[523], l/2+ [411] and l/2−[541]. The results are discussed in terms of rotational models.

Notes: Abstract The high spin level structure of the three-neutron nucleus149Gd has been investigated by in-beamγ-ray and electron spectroscopy with (α, xn) reactions. The observed levels are characterized as members of the shell model multipletsνf 7 2/3 ,νh 9/2 f 7 2/2 ,νf 7 2/3 ×3−,νh 9/2 f 7 2/2 ×3−, and tentativelyνf 7 2/3 ×(3−)2. The energies of theν f 7 2/3 states agree only moderately with those calculated using empirical two-nucleon interactions taken from148Gd, which indicates the importance of long range contributions already atN=85.

Notes: Abstract Yrast levels in the doubly-magic nucleus56Ni have been studied by in-beam gg-spectroscopy with the reaction54Fe(α, 2n)56Ni. A cascade of five γ -transitions is established. A shell model calculation of 2p2h, T=0 states, using empirical matrix elements, suggests the assignments 8+ and 10+ for the two highest levels.
