Notes: Abstract Partial ureteral duplication in an inverted Y is evidenced by the presence of a ureter duplicated at a variable level before reaching the bladder, in either an orthotopic or an ectopic position. A case of ureteral duplication at the level of the renal hilum with opening of a ureter at the level of the epididymis is reported. The description of this original case is compared with the data in the literature. The stages of organogenesis of the superior excretory pathway leading to ureteral ectopia and ureteral anomalies of number are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract Using observations with the ALOMAR SOUSY radar near Andenes (69.3°N, 16.0°E) from 1994 until 1997 polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE) have been investigated in dependence on geomagnetic K indices derived at the Auroral Observatory Tromsø (69.66°N, 18.94°E). During night-time and morning hours a significant correlation between the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the radar results and the geomagnetic K indices could be detected with a maximum correlation near midnight. The correlation becomes markedly smaller in the afternoon and early evening hours with a minimum near 17 UT. This diurnal variation is in reasonable agreement with riometer absorption at Ivalo (68.55°N, 27.28°E) and can be explained by the diurnal variation of ionization due to precipitating high energetic particles. Therefore, a part of the diurnal PMSE variation is caused by this particle precipitation. The variability of the solar EUV variation, however, has no significant influence on the PMSE during the observation period.

Notes: Summary The registration of the action potentials of muscle, nerve centres and finally nerve cells has produced many essential results during the last decade. But it can be shown, that quite a number of these results were obtained in experiments on the action currents of human muscles 30 years ago. In some respects the human experiments are of even greater significance than those on animals. The so-called monosynaptic reflexes are essentially identical with a group of reflexes which were described by the author thirty years ago and named “Eigenreflexe”. At that time the monosynaptic quality of those reflexes was derived merely from anatomical data (direct collaterals from the posterior roots to the anterior horn cells, Lenhossék). The synapse-time was estimated only as probably lying near 1 msec. These monosynaptic “Eigenreflexe” are subordinated in characteristic manner to the polysynaptic reflexes and especially to the voluntary movements. The voluntary innervation as a whole is not changed by the monosynaptic reflexes but it is only distributed in a special way, as is clearly demonstrated by the “Vibrations-versuch.” The experiments on the inhibition following the monosynaptic reflexes (silent period) and on the subnormal phase of 30 years ago are compared with the modern results and it is shown, that the experiments on man and on animals supplement one another.

Notes: Summary Ultrastractural morphometry was used to quantify capillary basement membrane width, pericyte coverage of capillaries, pericyte degeneration, and the extent of acellular capillaries in skeletal muscle obtained at autopsy from neck, thigh, calf and foot of five male and four female diabetic subjects and an equal number of sex- and age-matched nondiabetic subjects. Within diabetic or nondiabetic subjects, the trend for all four parameters to increase in frequency or magnitude in the order neck 〈 thigh 〈 calf was highly significant; the only statistically significant difference between calf and foot muscles for any of the four parameters was capillary basement membrane width for nondiabetic subjects, which was significantly thinner in foot than in calf muscle (t=2.45;p〈0.05). Pericyte coverage of capillaries did not differ between diabetic and nondiabetic subjects for each muscle examined; however, capillary basement membrane width, the frequency of pericyte debris and acellular capillaries were increased significantly in the lower extremity muscles of diabetic compared to nondiabetic subjects, and the magnitude of the difference between these two groups increased in the order thigh 〈 calf 〈 foot. The observations that pericyte degeneration and acellular capillaries are present in skeletal muscle as well as in retinal microvessels suggest that common pathophysiological mechanisms may contribute to vascular disease in these two very different tissues. The additional finding that relative differences between diabetic and nondiabetic subjects, in the frequency and magnitude of these changes, increase in the order neck 〈 calf 〈 foot is consistent with the marked increase in peripheral vascular disease and gangrene in the lower extremities of diabetic patients.

Notes: Abstract  The purpose of the present study was to determine if cardiac actions of dichloromethane (DCM) in vivo correlate with in vitro alterations of Ca2+ dynamics in cardiac myocytes. Neonatal rat ventricular myocytes were obtained from 2- to 4-day-old rats, and electrically induced fluctuations of cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in single cardiomyocytes were investigated using spectrofluorometric analysis of fura-2-[Ca2+]i binding. In cultured myocytes, cumulative exposure to 0.64–40.96 mM DCM resulted in a concentration-dependent and reversible decrease in the magnitude of [Ca2+]i transients with IC10 and IC50 values of 7.98 and 18.82 mM, respectively. Total inhibition of [Ca2+]i transients and cessation of beating were observed at 40.96 mM DCM. Suffusion with DCM for 40 min did not cause morphological alterations of the myocytes. In a urethane-anesthetized rat model, left ventricular pressure was measured by introducing a tip catheter via the carotid artery into the left ventricle, the ECG was recorded by two needle electrodes applied subcutaneously to the chest wall, and arterial pressure was measured via the femoral artery. Oral administration of 3.1–12.4 mmol DCM/kg resulted in DCM blood concentrations between 1.0 and 1.6 mM, accompanied by a dose-dependent decrease in contractile force and heart rate without influencing blood pressure and ECG tracings. Moreover, DCM treatment provided significant protection against arrhythmia development due to CaCl2-infusion. In spite of the slight discrepancy between DCM blood concentrations and in vitro concentrations of DCM for [Ca2+]i transient inhibition, present data are consistent with the view that cardiac effects after DCM exposure are mediated by alterations of Ca2+ dynamics during excitation-contraction coupling.

Notes: Abstract The efficiency of surfactant application to improve or inhibit metal solubilization and sulfur oxidation kinetics during the bioleaching of heavy metal-contaminated sediments was studied in suspension-leaching experiments. The river sediment used contained large amounts of fine particles and organic matter. Three types of surfactants were tested: sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), a C12/14-alkanolethoxylate (Präwozell F1214/5N), and a wettable sulfur (Netz- schwefel 80 WP). Adding 10 mmol SDS/l led to transient inhibition of acidification, metal solubilization and sulfur oxidation. Inhibiting bioleaching for just 14 days required about ten times more SDS than the amount used for mine waste mitigation. The use of Präwozell resulted in poor inhibition; and using of wettable sulfur did not improve leaching efficiency. The bulk of these surfactants was sorbed onto the solid particles immediately on application, while the remainder in the aqueous phase disappeared within a few days.
