    Notes: It is proved that the Newman–Penrose constants associated with zero-rest-mass spin-1 fields on Minkowskian space-time are inherited from the Newman–Penrose constants associated with the complex wave function from which these fields are constructed. This latter construction is also given and a possible extension of these results to spin-s (=0,1,2,...) fields is indicated.

    Notes: The geometric optics approximation to a solution of Einstein's vacuum field equations is studied using the approach of Burnett [J. Math. Phys. 30, 90 (1989)] in which the usual averaging methods are replaced by the use of weak limits. The technique is applied to calculate the gravitational field of high-frequency gravity waves produced by isolated sources. The background space–time derived is of the Robinson–Trautman form with a nonvanishing Ricci tensor and the high-frequency, small-amplitude perturbation is explicitly calculated. In general, the wave fronts are homeomorphic to two-spheres. For purely spherical waves we exhibit the plane wave limit in the geometric optics approximation and thereby recover an example given by Burnett, but with two degrees of freedom of polarization present instead of his one. The identification of a mass-loss formula of the Bondi–Sachs type in the background space–time is also discussed.

    Notes: The asymptotic form of the electromagnetic field due to a bounded distribution of charge current in an open, expanding Friedmann–Lemaiˆtre–Robertson–Walker universe is studied. The technique used is to first describe a mechanism for passing from a solution of Maxwell's vacuum field equations on Minkowskian space-time to a solution of Maxwell's field equations in a region free of charge current on the cosmological background. This is tested on the field of an accelerating point charge and then applied to the rigorous treatment of the asymptotic electromagnetic field of a bounded charge-current distribution in Minkowskian space-time given by Goldberg and Kerr [J. Math. Phys. 5, 172 (1964)]. A "peeling expansion'' of the electromagnetic field in the expanding universe is obtained in inverse powers of a parameter that is proportional to the area distance along the generators of future null cones with vertices on the world line of a fundamental observer. The algebraic character of the two leading coefficients in the expansion is the same as that of the two leading coefficients in the Goldberg–Kerr expansion in Minkowskian space-time. In addition, bounds can be calculated, at any instant in the history of a fundamental observer, on all the coefficients in the peeling expansion, as a consequence of the evaluation of such bounds by Goldberg and Kerr in the case treated by them.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of mesoscale eddy variability on the Japan/East Sea mean circulation is examined from satellite altimeter data and results from the Naval Research Laboratory Layered Ocean Model (NLOM). Sea surface height variations from the Geosat-Exact Repeat Mission and TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter satellites imply geostrophic velocities. At the satellite crossover points, the total velocity and the Reynolds stress due to geostrophic mesoscale turbulence are calculated. After spatial interpolation the momentum flux and effect on geostrophic balance indicates that the eddy variability aids in the transport of the Polar Front and the separation of the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC). The NLOM results elucidate the impact of eddy variability on the EKWC separation from the Korean coast. Eddy variability is suppressed by either increasing the model viscosity or decreasing the model resolution. The simulations with decreased eddy variability indicate a northward overshoot of the EKWC. Only the model simulation with sufficient eddy variability depicts the EKWC separating from the Korean coast at the observed latitude. The NLOM simulations indicate mesoscale influence through upper ocean-topographic coupling.

    Notes: Abstract As part of a map-based cloning strategy designed to isolate the root-knot nematode resistance gene Mi, tomato F2 populations were analyzed in order to identify recombination points close to this economically important gene. A total of 21 089 F2 progeny plants were screened using morphological markers. An additional 1887 F2 were screened using PCR-based flanking markers. Fine-structure mapping of recombinants with newly developed AFLP markers, and RFLP markers derived from physically mapped cosmid subclones, localized Mi to a genomic region of about 550 kb. The low frequency of recombinants indicated that recombination was generally suppressed in these crosses and that crossovers were restricted to particular regions. To circumvent this problem, a population of Lycopersicon peruvianum, the species from which Mi was originally introgressed, that was segregating for resistance was developed. Screening of this population with PCR, RFLP and AFLP markers identified several plants with crossovers near Mi. Recombination frequency was approximately eight-fold higher in the Mi region of the L. peruvianum cross. However, even within the wild species cross, recombination sites were not uniformly distributed in the region. By combining data from the L. esculentum and L. peruvianum recombinant analyses, it was possible to localize Mi to a region of the genome spanning less than 65 kb.

    Notes: Abstract We describe how the null congruence tangent to the multiple Debever-Penrose direction of the Taub-NUT solution of Einstein's vacuum field equations may be constructed emanating into the future from a timelike world tube having normal cross sections. The curious shapes of the cross sections of the world tube are plotted, using a computer, for critical ranges of the parameterb/R 0 whereb is the Taub-NUT parameter andR 0 is the “radius” of the world tube. It is found that these cross sections can be maintained spatially compact only for some values ofb/R 0.
