Notes: Abstract A rare complex malformation is described consisting of asymmetrical changes in the fronto-nasal region, bilateral complete cleft lip, alveolar ridge, and palate, malformation of the right eye, the mandible, the tongue, the external ears, the posterior cerebral fossa and the cerebellum, as well as cardiac dextroposition and a supernumary rib on both sides. Problems of aetiology and structural genesis are discussed. It is shown that classification into one of the existing syndromes is not really possible.

Notes: Summary The problems of therapy are described by comparing a retrospective (17 cases) to a prospective (12 cases) study of cases of traumatic lesions of the optic nerve. Intensive cooperation between specialists and a quick diagnosis facilitate the decision regarding treatment and lead to better results. Indication for surgical treatment — transcranial or transethmoidal approach — should be confined to posttraumatic deterioration of optic nerve function in combination with fractures of the optic canal, and to its deterioration in spite of proper conservative treatment — shock treatment and cortisone infusions-.

Notes: Summary In the recently isolated Mouriquand strain of mice, virus-like particles of the A and B type are abundant in mammary tumours, and fewer particles of the C type are present in leukaemic and non-leukaemic organs. In one animal all three kinds of particles have been shown. Striking cytological features of the mammary tumours are described.

Notes: Summary Pituitaries of mammary tumor-bearing mice (C3H) were examined by quantitative electron microscopy. The results indicate that considerable modifications occur in mammotropic and somatotropic cells. Both types show an increase of the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum and a decrease of the volume of secretory granules (in percent of cytoplasmic volume), suggesting a heightened secretory activity of these cells during mammary carcinogenesis.

Notes: Summary Female Sprague-Dawley rats bearing primarily-induced mammary carcinomas were treated with a new immunostimulating agent (P 40). The histopathological modifications encountered in tumors, lymph nodes, liver and spleen are described. Intratumoral injections provoke a more widespread response of the RES, and particularly a more intense reaction in the draining lymph nodes, than systemic treatment.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Tastkörperähnliche Strukturen wurden in einem plexiformen Neurofibrom aufgefunden.
Notes: Summary Tactile corpuscle-like structures were identified in a plexiform neurofibroma, which was localized on the right cranial hemisphere of a 16-year-old boy and had necessitated repeated surgery. These structures were studied by light and electron microscopy. The origin of their component cells is, however, still controversial. We believe to have accumulated sufficient evidence for a Schwann cell origin of these cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The present paper describes the procedure of the “Viennese Concept” in the treatment of cleft lip and palate: 1. Prolabium closure at the end of the first week of life, 2. velorrhaphy at the end of the first year of life, 3. rehabilitation of upper lip and nose at the end of the fourth year, 4. palatorrhaphy at the end of the sixth year of life. Conservative orthodontic treatment is only begun following velorrhaphy with a maxillary cover plate and continues until closure of the hard palate. The goals of the “Viennese Concept” are as follows: 1. Normal development of the maxilla and of the middle parts of the face, 2. normalized function of the orofacial and velar muscles in due time to provide normal speech and auditory development, 3. early reduction of aesthetic impairments in order to avoid late psychological sequelae. To obtain objective assessment of maxillary growth measurements on models were done. The results show unimpaired growth of the maxilla up to the age of twelve.
