Notes: Summary The relationships of adjacent mounds of five widely distributed species of termites, at two sites south and southwest of Townsville in north Queensland have been examined. It has been shown that four of these species,Amitermes laurensis (Mjöberg),Tumulitermes pastinator (Hill),Drepanotermes rubriceps (Froggatt) andDrepanotermes perniger (Froggatt), are polycalic, with up to eight mounds comprising a single colony. A simple unequivocal method was used. A bait containing a radioactive tracer (131I) was introduced to a mound and the subsequent transfer of this bait to other mounds by termites was monitored with a scintillation detector. The existence of polycalic mounds among some Australian termite colonies alters the interpretation of mound distribution data. In particular, overdispersion of the mounds of some species cannot be interpreted as indicating intraspecific competition if the locations of polycalic mounds are unknown.

Notes: Abstract Termites are more abundant in the warmer lower latitudinal regions of the earth. Within these broad geographic regions, however, the precise nature of the factors influencing termite abundance is poorly understood. In this paper I have examined the abundance of detritivorous, mound-building termites and certain aspects of the climate, soils and vegetation at 14 sites in tropical northeastern Australia. No relationship between termite mound density and the particle-size characteristics of surface soil horizons, plant available phosphorous or rainfall was found. Microbial biomass carbon level of the surface soil was found to have a strong negative relationship with termite mound numbers. The negative interaction between the soil microbial population and termites may be due to the limiting effect of the organic matter processing capacity of the soil microbial population on the success of termites in occupying the decomposer niche in any particular area. Microbial biomass may therefore be a major factor influencing termite abundance in tropical Australian landscapes and elsewhere.

Notes: Summary A 23-year-old man presented with signs of increased intracranial pressure. CAT scan, cisternogram, and angiogram on admission were reported to be normal. Lumbar puncture revealed elevated pressure and protein of 500 mg-%. CSF cytology revealed malignant tumor cells. A brain biopsy and decompression were carried out to reveal diffuse subarachnoid invasion by malignant tumor cells. Immunohistochemical studies using anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein serum revealed tumor cells to be positive for GFA protein. A lumbosacral CAT scan 9 days after surgery revealed numerous sclerotic densities involving bony pelvis, sacrum, T-12 vertebra and left femoral head. No definite primary site of tumor was found antemortem in the brain or any other organ. Autopsy demonstrated diffuse subarachnoid spread of malignant tumor in brain and spinal cord. Malignant astrocytoma was found in the midline pons projecting into the 4th ventricle. The histology of the neoplasm was identical in all sites including bone. No other tumor was found at autopsy. The vascular invasion by the tumor cells in the pons and distant bony metastasis in this case suggest hematogenous spread. A review of the lumbar X-ray taken 6 weeks prior to admission and the presence of well-established bony lesions within 10 days of craniotomy suggest that this is a rare case of extraneural metastasis of glioma occurring prior to surgery. The midline location of clinically occult pontine glioma and the presence of bony metastasis created difficulty in the diagnosis but immunohistochemical studies proved to be crucial in establishing correct diagnosis antemortem.

Notes: Abstract  As part of a broader study, the aim of which is to identify soil factors that might be associated with yield decline of sugar cane, microbial biomass and protease activities were examined in soil samples collected from seven paired old and new land sites in three cane-growing districts of north Queensland. No consistent changes in soil protease activities were observed, although some sites exhibited specific effects, as a result of extensive periods of sugar cane monoculture. Soil microbial biomass, however, was significantly lower in those soils where sugar cane had been grown for extended periods. The implications of a lowering of soil microbial biomass on sugar cane yields and sustainability are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The recent availability of substantial data sets taken by the EISCAT Svalbard Radar allows several important tests to be made on the determination of convection patterns from incoherent scatter radar results. During one 30-h period, the Svalbard Radar made 15 min scans combining local field aligned observations with two, low elevation positions selected to intersect the two beams of the Common Programme Four experiment being simultaneously conducted by the EISCAT VHF radar at Troms⊘. The common volume results from the two radars are compared. The plasma convection velocities determined independently by the two radars are shown to agree very closely and the combined three-dimensional velocity data used to test the common assumption of negligible field-aligned flow in this regime.

Notes: Abstract Elevation scans across geomagnetic mid latitudes by the incoherent scatter radar at Millstone Hill captured the ionospheric response to the firing of the Space Shuttle Challenger OMS thrusters near the peak of the F layer on July 30, 1985. Details of the excitation of airglow and the formation of an ionospheric hole during this event have been reported in an earlier paper by Mendillo et al.. The depletion (factor ∼2) near the 320 km Shuttle orbital altitude persisted for ∼35 min and then recovered to near normal levels, while at 265 km the density was reduced by a factor of ∼6; this significant reduction in the bottomside F-region density persisted for more than 3 hours. Total electron content in the vicinity of the hole was reduced by more than a factor of 2, and an oscillation of the F-region densities with 40-min period ensued and persisted for several hours. Plasma vertical Doppler velocity varied quasi-periodically with a ∼80-min period, while magnetic field variations observed on the field line through the Shuttle-burn position exhibited a similar ∼80-min periodicity. An interval of magnetic field variations at hydromagnetic frequencies (∼95 s period) accompanied the ionospheric perturbations on this field line. Radar observations revealed a downward phase progression of the 40-min period density enhancements of -1.12° km−1, corresponding to a 320-km vertical wavelength. An auroral-latitude geomagnetic disturbance began near the time of the Spacelab-2 experiment and was associated with the imposition of a strong southward IMF Bz across the magnetosphere. This created an additional complication in the interpretation of the active ionospheric experiment. It cannot be determined uniquely whether the ionospheric oscillations, which followed the Spacelab-2 experiment, were related to the active experiment or were the result of a propagating ionospheric disturbance (TID) launched by the enhanced auroral activity. The most reasonable conclusion is that the ionospheric oscillations were a result of the coincident geomagnetic disturbance. The pronounced depletion of the bottomside ionosphere, however, accentuated the oscillatory behavior during the interval following the Shuttle OMS burn.

Notes: Abstract The Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Data Acquisition System (MIDAS) is based on an abstract model of an incoherent scatter radar. This model is implemented in a hierarchical software system, which serves to isolate hardware and low-level software implementation details from higher levels of the system. Inherent in this is the idea that implementation details can easily be changed in response to technological advances. MIDAS is an evolutionary system, and the MIDAS hardware has, in fact, evolved while the basic software model has remained unchanged. From the earliest days of MIDAS, it was realized that some functions implemented in specialized hardware might eventually be implemented by software in a general-purpose computer. MIDAS-W is the realization of this concept. The core component of MIDAS-W is a Sun Microsystems UltraSparc 10 workstation equipped with an Ultrarad 1280 PCI bus analog to digital (A/D) converter board. In the current implementation, a 2.25 MHz intermediate frequency (IF) is bandpass sampled at 1 μs intervals and these samples are multicast over a high-speed Ethernet which serves as a raw data bus. A second workstation receives the samples, converts them to filtered, decimated, complex baseband samples and computes the lag-profile matrix of the decimated samples. Overall performance is approximately ten times better than the previous MIDAS system, which utilizes a custom digital filtering module and array processor based correlator. A major advantage of MIDAS-W is its flexibility. A portable, single-workstation data acquisition system can be implemented by moving the software receiver and correlator programs to the workstation with the A/D converter. When the data samples are multicast, additional data processing systems, for example for raw data recording, can be implemented simply by adding another workstation with suitable software to the high-speed network. Testing of new data processing software is also greatly simplified, because a workstation with the new software can be added to the network without impacting the production system. MIDAS-W has been operated in parallel with the existing MIDAS-1 system to verify that incoherent scatter measurements by the two systems agree. MIDAS-W has also been used in a high-bandwidth mode to collect data on the November, 1999, Leonid meteor shower.
