    Notes: Abstract Resistance to the morpholine-fungicide fenpropimorph was studied in Aspergillus niger and A. nidulans. Mass selection of conidia of A. nidulans on agar amended with the fungicide at different concentrations did not yield of resistant mutants, even after UV-treatment of the conidia. In contrast, similar experiments with A. niger generated many fenpropimorph-resistant mutants. The mutants displayed cross-resistance to fenpropidin and generally showed wild-type sensitivity to the unrelated toxicants fenarimol and cycloheximide. Genetic analysis of fenpropimorph resistance in A. niger was carried out by means of the parasexual cycle. In the mutants tested, two genes located on linkage group II were involved in fenpropimorph resistance. Dominance tests showed that resistance to fenpropimorph in A. niger is recessive.

    Notes: Abstract We have cloned the uvsC gene of Aspergillus nidulans by complementation of the A. nidulansuvsC114 mutant. The predicted protein UVSC shows 67.4% sequence identity to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad51 protein and 27.4% sequence identity to the Escherichia coli RecA protein. Transcription of uvsC is induced by methyl-methane sulphonate (MMS), as is transcription of RAD51 of yeast. Similar levels of uvsC transcription were observed after MMS induction in a uvsC + strain and the uvsC114 mutant. The coding sequence of the uvsC114 allele has a deletion of 6 bp, which results in deletion of two amino acids and replacement of one amino acid in the translation product. In order to gain more insight into the biological function of the uvsC gene, a uvsC null mutant was constructed, in which the entire uvsC coding sequence was replaced by a selectable marker gene. Meiotic and mitotic phenotypes of a uvsC + strain, the uvsC114 mutant and the uvsC null mutant were compared. The uvsC null mutant was more sensitive to both UV and MMS than the uvsC114 mutant. The uvsC114 mutant arrested in meiotic prophase-I. The uvsC null mutant arrested at an earlier stage, before the onset of meiosis. One possible interpretation of these meiotic phenotypes is that the A. nidulans homologue of Rad51 of yeast has a role both in the specialized processes preceding meiosis and in meiotic prophase I.

    Notes: Abstract The systematic decrease in (n,p) cross sections with increasing neutron number for isotopes in reactions induced by 14 MeV neutrons on heavy targets is explained in terms of the preequilibrium model. The relevant physical quantities responsible for this behavior are proton and neutron separation energies, similarly to (n, p) reactions on lighter nuclei, in which proton emission is governed by the compound-nucleus model. The principal transition rateλ + in the preequilibrium exciton-model calculations should be kept constant (for a given number of excitons and constant energy) in order to obtain a good description of data. The calculations are compared with experimental (n,p) cross sections for series of Te, Xe, W, and Os isotopes.

    Notes: Abstract The preequilibrium emission of nucleons from reactions induced by medium-energy heavy ions is analyzed by using (i) the first term of the Griffin-exciton-model expansion and (ii) the modified Harp-Miller-Berne equilibration model. It is shown that both models account well for the high-energy component of angle-integrated emission spectra. The values of the relevant parametern 0 (initial number of degrees of freedom which share the available energy), obtained from the analysis with the two models, are practically equal for each reaction studied. The best-fit values ofn 0 depend on the incident energy. This behaviour is a novel feature of preequilibrium emission mechanisms in heavy-ion reactions, hitherto unobserved in light-ion reactions.

    Notes: Abstract The (n, 2n) cross sections for about 80 nuclei ranging fromA=45 to 209 were calculated using the evaporation model. The calculation was performed for incident energiesE n which satisfy the conditionU R =E n +Q n ,2n=6±1 MeV. For 11 nuclei in the above mass region, (n, 2n) excitation functions were calculated from threshold to 20 MeV. In all calculations a single set of input parameters was consistently used. The influence of the level-density parameter and neutron cross sections on the evaporation model was tested. All calculated results were compared with experimental data. The systematic discrepancy between experimental data and evaporation calculations leads to the necessity of introducing the preequilibrium emission mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract The exciton model in its closed form and the Weisskopf-Ewing model have been consistently applied to neutron-induced reactions. The analysis has been performed for 12 nuclei in the rangeA=45–209. The primary particle-emission is considered to be governed by an admixture of precompound and compound-nucleus mechanisms, while all consecutive particles are considered to undergo pure compound-nucleus emission. The calculated primary-neutron spectra and excitation functions for (n, p), (n, 2n) and (n, 3n) reactions atE n=4–24 MeV have been compared with experimental data. The average best-fit values of the exciton-model free parameterK have been found to be ¯K=700 MeV3. Departures form this value appear to cancel out structure effects introduced into transition rates through the structure-sensitive single-particle level density.

    Notes: The cloned part of the flocculation gene FLO1 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Teunissen, A.W.R.H., van den Berg, J.A. and Steensma, H.Y. (1993). Physical localization of the flocculation gene FLO1 on chromosome I of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast, in press) has been sequenced. The sequence contains a large open reading frame of 2685 bp. The amino acid sequence of the putative protein reveals a serine- and threonine-rich C-terminus (46%), the presence of repeated sequences and a possible secretion signal at the N-terminus. Although the sequence is not complete (we assume the missing fragment consists of repeat units), these data strongly suggest that the protein is located in the cell wall, and thus may be directly involved in the flocculation process.
