Notes: Abstract In the present study we investigated the effect of a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin (IL)-10, on the development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. Each DBA1/J mouse was immunized with 200 μg of native collagen and followed by booster injections at 3 weeks. rmIL-10 was injected i.p. daily at a dose of 100 ng/mouse. Mice were divided into four groups according to the administration period of rmIL-10. As a result, a 48-day course of IL-10 treatment significantly suppressed the severity of arthritis. Among the 4 groups, the most pronounced suppression was observed in the group in which IL-10 was given from day 0 to 21. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the serum IgG anti-type II collagen (CII) titers between the four groups. Moreover, the production of cytokines (IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) and other mediators (prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO)) by peritoneal macrophages seemed to show no clear correlation with the severity of arthritis in mice. These results raise the possibility that IL-10 might be a useful agent for suppressing the progression and the development of CIA in mice.

Notes: Abstract Seven cases of phalangeal microgeodic syndrome in childhood are reported. Reviewing the literature, we have found a total of thirty Japanese cases, including the cases of our own. On the other hand, only ten cases have been reported outside Japan. The mean age of onset of the Japanese cases was six and a half years, which is older than that in the initial description. Of further interest is the fact that all the cases in Japan occurred sporadically and exclusively in winter, and regressed spontaneously and fairly rapidly within six months. Furthermore, most of the cases reported in Europe also occurred in the winter months. These facts imply an etiological relationship between the lowered temperature and the bone lesions.

Notes: Summary Perthes' disease was seen in two boys, aged 6 1/2, with the Russell-Silver Syndrome. Both presented with groin or thigh pain in their shortened side together with a progressive limp. They were treated conservatively, and when reviewed 6 1/2 years after diagnosis the lesions of the hip had improved clinically and radiographically. The leg length discrepancy did not increase.

Notes: Summary The effect of simple cold storage in Euro-Collins solution on prolonging successful preservation time was examined on an established rat limb transplant model. Limbs amputated at mid-thigh level were simply immersed in the solution and stored in a refrigerator at 4°C. After varying periods of cold storage, the limb was orthotopically grafted to another isogeneic rat using microsurgical techniques. The survival rates for 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours' storage were 100%, 90%, 67% and 50% respectively, and the longest time of successful preservation achieved was 78 hours. Survival rates were greatly decreased when amputated limbs were initially perfused with Euro-Collins solution and immersed in the same solution. In a third set of experiments, the limbs were preserved by a conventional method of cold storage in air, and the survival rates were decreased even further. Evaluation by measuring postoperative paw swelling and microscopic examination of the grafts further confirmed the effectiveness of the simple immersion method without perfusion.

Notes: Abstract The clinical and radiographic features of the intermediate form of osteopetrosis in two sibs are presented in which the disorder appears to have been inherited as a recessive trait. Although this form of osteopetrosis has been poorly delineated, its recognition is practically important in order to give an accurate prognosis. This paper also presents an unusual complication of bilateral avascular necrosis of the femoral head in the younger sib. Radiographic changes of the femoral heads suggest those of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, though the possibility of avascular necrosis following unrecognized femoral neck fracture is not completely excluded.

Notes: Abstract Generalized enchondromatosis is a newly delineated type of enchodromatosis. Radiographically there are multiple enchondromata in almost all metaphyses of the long and short tubular bones and the lesions are in almost the same stage of development with mild platyspondyly and skull deformity. The pelvic changes are characteristic and, together with the metaphyseal changes of the long and short tubular bones, are probably diagnostic of this disorder. The present case demonstrates advanced radiographic features of this disorder associated with unusual soft tissue calcifications and hemangiomas. The presence of hemangiomas in our case as well as three cases in the literature suggests this feature is more than a coincidence.
