Notes: Describes the utility of supply chain partnerships as a mechanism for the diffusion of change in employee relations. Uses case study and survey evidence to explain the means by which this can be achieved. Examines data relating to both customer and supplier organizations in the manufacturing sector. Concludes that the customer-supplier relationship can act as an agent of change in human resource management, particularly as they do not need to be artificially created, and can reach "peripheral" as well as "core" firms. Suggests that the local economic development agencies may be able to encourage the formation of networks of organizations in a particular industry and promote the spread of innovations in employee relations in this way.

Notes: The growing interest in total quality management programmes iswell-known, although there is some concern that such programmes have, inpractice, paid only limited attention to human resource managementissues. Uses the findings of a primary case study and two secondary casestudies to examine this particular proposition. The basic findingsindicate that both the introduction and the operation of total qualitymanagement programmes require a consistent management approach, withparticular effort being given to making complementary changes in relatedhuman resource management practices.

Notes: Examines a Japanese-owned customer organization in Britain which hasadopted Kaizen (continuous improvement) programmes in order to discoverwhat effect this has had on the internal organization of its suppliers. With a particular interest in HRM and workforce training, uses aquestionnaire and case studies to illuminate the changes made insupplier organizations and the mechanisms which support thesedevelopments. The evidence suggests that 63 per cent of supplierorganizations studied have made changes, with the leading changes beingmade in the areas of quality management and workforce training as theyhave become more open to examination by the customer organization andwith the increased emphasis on quality. Concludes that increasingadoption of Kaizen or TQM by customer organizations has implications forpersonnel and HRM functions in supplier organizations, and that thetraditionally self-contained boundaries of companies will become lessrigid.
