Notes: This paper provides a general valuation method for the European options whose payoff is restricted by curved boundaries contractually set on the underlying asset price process when it follows the geometric Brownian motion. Our result is based on the generalization of the Levy formula on the Brownian motion by T. W. Anderson in sequential analysis. We give the explicit probability formula that the geometric Brownian motion reaches in an interval at the maturity date without hitting either the lower or the upper curved boundaries. Although the general pricing formulae for options with boundaries are expressed as infinite series in the general case, our numerical study suggests that the convergence of the series is rapid. Our results include the formulae for options with a lower boundary by Merton (1973), for path-dependent options by Goldman, Sossin, and Gatto (1979), and for some corporate securities as special cases.

Notes: This study was designed to test whether the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA) receptor-facilitating drug, aniracetam, could potentiate photic responses of the biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of rodents. Using the whole-cell patch technique, we first demonstrated that AMPA currents elicited by either local AMPA application or optic chiasm stimulation were augmented by aniracetam in the neurons of the SCN. The AMPA application-elicited increase of intracellular Ca2+ concentration in SCN slices was also enhanced by aniracetam treatment. The systemic injection of aniracetam dose-dependently (10–100 mg/kg) potentiated the phase delay in behavioral rhythm induced by brief light exposure of low intensity (3 lux) but not high intensity (10 or 60 lux) during early subjective night. Under the blockade of NMDA receptors by (+) MK801, aniracetam failed to potentiate a light (3 lux)-induced phase delay in behavioral rhythm. Aniracetam increased the photic induction of c-Fos protein in the SCN that was elicited by low intensity light exposure (3 lux). These results suggest that AMPA receptor-mediated responses facilitated by aniracetam can explain enhanced photic responses of the biological clock in the SCN of rodents.

Notes: The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus, the primary circadian pacemaker in mammals, and the retinohypothalamic tract, the retinal afferent fibres to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, both mature during early postnatal life. The establishment of circadian rhythms is thought to depend on input from the retina, but the mechanism remains unknown. Here we examined developmental changes in the expression of the Ca2+-binding proteins calbindin-D28k and calretinin in the mouse hypothalamus. Robust calbindin-D28k immunoreactivity was observed in the dorsomedial suprachiasmatic nucleus and the supraoptic nucleus in neonatal mice (postnatal day 3). The calbindin-D28k immunoreactivity decreased significantly in the suprachiasmatic nucleus but not in the supraoptic nucleus during postnatal days 9–15, when retinohypothalamic tract projections to the suprachiasmatic nucleus are completed. Calretinin immunoreactivity was low in the neonatal suprachiasmatic nucleus and increased with development in the ventrolateral suprachiasmatic nucleus, in parallel with the developmental reduction of calbindin-D28k immunoreactivity observed in the dorsomedial suprachiasmatic nucleus. Developmentally stable calretinin immunoreactivity was also observed in retinohypothalamic tract fibres. Organotypic slice cultures of the suprachiasmatic nucleus were prepared from postnatal day 3 mice to examine the effect of the absence of retinohypothalamic tract inputs on developmental changes in calbindin-D28k and calretinin expression. After 12 days in vitro, the cultured suprachiasmatic nucleus slices exhibited dense calbindin-D28k immunoreactivity similar to neonatal mice, and calretinin immunoreactivity in the ventrolateral suprachiasmatic nucleus similar to young adult mice. These results demonstrate a developmental reduction in calbindin-D28k expression that paralleled retinohypothalamic tract formation and a developmental increase in calretinin expression that is independent of retinohypothalamic tract connections to suprachiasmatic nucleus neurons.

Notes: The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) develops as the circadian pacemaker during postnatal life. Although both GABAA and NMDA receptors are expressed in the majority of SCN neurons, postnatal development of their functions has not been analysed. Thus, we studied the receptor-mediated Ca2+ responses in mouse hypothalamic slices prepared on postnatal days (P) 6–16. The NMDA-induced Ca2+ flux was prominent in the SCN and maximal Ca2+ responses in Mg2+-free conditions had no day–night variations in P14–16 mice. At P6–7, extracellular Mg2+ reduced the NMDA-induced Ca2+ flux irrespective of the circadian time whereas, after P9–10, Mg2+ produced a larger reduction at night than during the daytime. Muscimol also significantly increased Ca2+ in the developing SCN. Voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channel blockers inhibited the muscimol-induced Ca2+ increase whereas tetrodotoxin had no effect, suggesting that stimulation of postsynaptic GABAA receptors depolarizes SCN neurons to increase Ca2+. Macroscopic imaging analysis demonstrated a developmental reduction in the muscimol-induced Ca2+ increase preferentially in the nighttime group older than P9–10. The day–night variation in the magnitude of the Ca2+ response was due to two cell populations, one of which exhibited an increase and the other a decrease in Ca2+ in response to muscimol. Because the critical developmental stages for exhibiting day–night variations in the receptor-mediated Ca2+ responses overlapped the maturation of firing rhythms in SCN neurons, the Ca2+ signalling may be necessary for or regulated by the mature circadian clock.

Notes: Diamond turning was carried out along the [110] direction on the (001) plane of single-crystal silicons at extremely small depths of cut of 100 and 500 nm. Cross-section transmission electron microscope observations revealed that turning had converted the layers of the surface into an amorphous structure directly, as well as in continuous chips. The thickness of the layers was about 150 nm in spite of the depth of cut. Under the amorphous layer, another damaged layer with many dislocations was formed, the thickness of which was about 2 and 3 μm at 100- and 500-nm cutting depth, respectively. At 500-nm cutting depth, microcracks were formed through the accumulation of excessive dislocations. At both depths of cut, however, the dislocations were mostly oriented along the 〈110〉 directions within the {111} planes. It was found that ductile-regime turning could be achieved by amorphization and deformation based on the {111}〈110〉 slip systems. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The exposure intensity during a shift and the metabolite levels in the shift-end urine were examined in male workers exposed to either benzene (65 subjects; the benzene group), toluene (35 subjects; the toluene group), or a mixture of both (55 subjects; the mixture group). In addition, 35 non-exposed male workers (the control group) were similarly examined for urinary metabolites to define background levels. A linear relationship was established between the intensity of solvent exposure and the corresponding urinary metabolite levels (i.e. phenol, catechol and quinol from benzene, and hippuric acid and o-cresol from toluene) in each case when one of the three exposed groups was combined with the control group for calculation. Comparison of regression lines in combination with regression analysis disclosed that urinary levels of phenol and quinol (but not catechol) were lower in the mixture group than in the benzene group when the intensities of exposure to benzene were comparable, indicating that the biotransformation of benzene to phenolic compounds (excluding catechol) in man is suppressed by co-exposure to toluene. Conversely, metabolism of toluene to hippuric acid was suppressed by benzene co-exposure. Conversion of toluene to o-cresol was also reduced by benzene, but to a lesser extent. The significance of the present findings on the mutual suppression of metabolism between benzene and toluene is discussed in relation to solvent toxicology and biological monitoring of exposure to the solvents.

Notes: Summary The relationship between the 8-h time-weighted average (TWA) intensity of exposure toN, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) vapor (with little possibility of skin contact with liquid DMF) and the subsequent excretion ofN-monomethylformamide (MMF) precursor in shift-end urine samples was examined in 116 workers exposed to DMF and 92 workers exposed to DMF in combination with toluene. Urinary MMF level was examined also in 42 non-exposed subjects. The TWA vapor concentration in breathing zone air of each worker was successfully measured by means of a recently developed diffusive sampler in which water was used as an absorbent. The examination of gas chromatographic (GC) conditions for MMF determination showed that the formation of MMF was not saturated when the injection port temperature was set at 200°C, reached a plateau at 250°C, and showed no additional increase at 300°C. There was a linear relationship between DMF in air and MMF in urine with a regression equation ofy =1.65x + 1.69 (r = 0.723,P〈0.01), wherey is MMF (unit; mg/l, uncorrected for urine density) in urine andx is DMF (ppm) in air, when only those exposed to DMF were selected, and the injection port temperature was set at 250°C. From this equation, it was possible to estimate that about 10% of the DMF absorbed will be excreted into urine as the MMF precursor. The slope of the regression line was significantly smaller among those exposed to DMF and toluene in combination as compared with those with DMF exposure only.

Notes: Abstract Objective To investigate the current levels of exposure of the Japanese population to cadmium and lead, in comparison with the levels in 1980s. · Design A nation wide survey was conducted in 1991–1994 (the 1990 study) in 19 study sites in Japan as a follow-up to a study conducted in 1979–1983 (the 1980 study). Blood samples and 24-h total food duplicates were collected from women who did not smoke or drink habitually. Methods Blood and food duplicates (after homogenization) were analysed for cadmium (Cd-B and Cd-F, respectively) and lead (Pb-B and Pb-F) by graphite furnace atomic absorption after wet-ashing. · Results Altogether, 467 women volunteered for blood sampling. Of these women, 375 also gave food duplicates. Geometric mean (GM) Cd-B levels in the 1990 study were lower than the corresponding 1980 values in most study sites so that the 1990 grand GM (1.98 ng/ml) for Cd-B was significantly lower than the 1980 GM (3.58 ng/ml). This reduction in Cd-B was related to the reduction in Cd-F (GM for Cd-F was 38.0 μg/day in the 1980 study and 30.0 Etg/day in the 1990 study). Dietary intake was almost exclusively the route of Cd burden among the populations studied. Both Pb-B and Pb-F also showed a remarkable reduction, i.e. from 33.9 ng/ml (1980 GM) to 23.2 ng/ml (1990 GM) in the case of Pb-B, and from 32.2 μg/day (1980 GM) to 7.1 μg/day (1990 GM) in the case of Pb-F. Pb-B, however, did not correlate with Pb-F either in the 1980 or the 1990 study, because Pb intake via inhalation of air remained significant when compared with dietary intake. · Conclusion The Cd burden in Japan has decreased markedly in the past 10 years, although it is still higher than in other countries. The Pb burden has been quite low.
