    Notes: Summary The effect of thyroid hormone on plasma somatomedin-C (SmC) level and on SmC release from perfused rat liver was investigated. Plasma SmC levels and liver tissue SmC were significantly increased in thyroxine-treated rats. Physiological doses of triiodothyronine increased SmC release and SmC concentration in the perfused rat liver. These results indicate that thyroid hormone directly enhances the synthesis and release of SmC in the rat.

    Notes: Abstract  HNK-1 expression was studied by immunohistochemistry in serial sections of embryonic and fetal rat hearts from 11.5 to 16.5 embryonic days. Graphic reconstructions were made to obtain detailed 3D information on the localization of immunoreactive tissues. The antibody used appeared to stain most parts of the venous sinus and the sinuatrial transitional zone as well as the atrioventricular transitional zone, but the patterns varied through the different developmental stages. At 11.5 days, positive myocardium was found in the right atrium and on top of the ventricular septal primordium. At 13.5 days, the left venous valve and the posterior atrial wall containing the orifice of the pulmonary vein were immunoreactive, and so were the right venous valve, the septum spurium and the superior, right-lateral and inferior parts of the atrioventricular canal. From the latter, immunoreactivity continued onto the crest of the ventricular septum. At 15.5 days, HNK-1 positivity in the two venous valves had become continuous, whereas the right-lateral part of the atrioventricular canal had lost its positivity, thus making the positive areas in the superior and inferior parts of this canal discontinuous. From the venous valves immunoreaction continued into the venous sinus septum but this area remained discontinuous with the inferior part of the atrioventricular canal. It is concluded that the entirety of venous sinus and sinuatrial transitional zone expresses the HNK-1 antigen and that the orifice of the pulmonary vein belongs to this complex, rather than to the embryonic atrium proper, which is HNK-1 negative. Extrapolation of these data to the adult human atrium leads to the conclusion hat most ’’atrial septal structures’’ are of sinuatrial origin, leaving the flap valve of the oval fossa (atrial septum primum) as the only really atrial structure. It is suggested that the atrioventricular node is derived from the inferior portion of the atrioventricular canal, and that two expansions of sinuatrial tissue form the substrate for anterior and posterior atrionodal inputs which in the literature have been described as internodal tracts.

    Notes: Abstract Ischemic/hypoxic brain damage induced in 7-day-old rats was significantly attenuated in a dose-dependent manner by intracerebral injection of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF; 2 or 4 μg) within 30 min after the insult. Whereas the great majority of the vehicle-treated animals showed massive infarction involving more than 75% of the affected cerebral hemisphere, GDNF injection resulted in a remarkable reduction in both the incidence and severity of the brain damage (incidence ranging from 76% to 93% in controls to 34% to 64% in the 2.0-μg group and 7% to 29% in 4.0-μg group). The induction of immunoreactive 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) in cerebral cortical neurons was also significantly reduced in GDNF-treated animals as compared to controls. The mechanisms responsible for the neuroprotective effects of GDNF remain unknown, although it has been speculated that these may be endogeneous. The higher expression of GDNF and its mRNA in developing brains may be one of the factors responsible for the relative resistance to ischemia of fetal and neonatal as opposed to adult brains. GDNF may possibly act by protecting against oxidative stress or by scavenging free radicals generated during ischemia. The results of our study strongly suggest that GDNF may prove to be an effective and potent protective agent against perinatal ischemic/hypoxic encephalopathy.

    Notes: Abstract Rates of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion were measured on a hydromedusae (Aglantha digitale), pteropods (Limacia helicina, Clione limacina), copepods (Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus, Metridia longa), an amphipod (Parathemisto libellula), a euphausiid (Thysanoessa inermis) and a chaetognath (Sagitta elegans), all of which were dominant species in the Barents Sea during early summer 1987. Water and ash contents and elemental composition (C and N) were also analysed on the specimens used in these metabolic experiments. Between species variations were 67.8% to 94.7% of wet weight in water content, 6.4% to 56.5% of dry weight in ash content, 16.7% to 61.0% of dry weight in carbon content, and 4.3% to 11.2% of dry weight in nitrogen content. Oxygen consumption rates ranged from 0.33 to 13.8 μl O2 individual-1 h-1, ammonia excretion rates, from 0.0072 to 0.885 μgN individual-1 h-1 and phosphate excretion rates, from 0.0036 to 0.33 μg P individual-1 h-1. In general, higher rates were associated with larger species, but considerable differences were also seen between species. The ratios between the rates (O : N, N : P, O : P) exhibited a wide species-specific variation, indicating differences in dominant metabolic substrates. Typical protein oriented metabolism was identified only in S. elegans. From the results of metabolic rate measurements and elemental analyses, daily losses of body carbon and nitrogen were estimated to be 0.50 to 4.15% and 0.084 to 1.87%, respectively, showing faster turnover rates of carbon than that of nitrogen. Comparison of daily loss of body carbon of the Barents Sea zooplankton with that of the Antarctic zooplankton indicated reduced rates of the former (63% on average).

    Notes: Abstract The abundance and vertical distribution pattern of a halocyprid ostracod,Conchoecia pseudodiscophora, were investigated in the Japan Sea in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Vertical sampling from 500 m depth to the surface in the water around Yamato Rise revealed that this ostracod was second in dominance by number and third to fourth by biomass of the total zooplankton collected with a 0.35 mm mesh Norpac net. Horizontal net tows in Toyama Bay indicated that the major population ofC. pseudodiscophora was distributed below 250 to 300 m depth. No diel migration pattern was evident. Its contribution to total zooplankton there was 5 to 10% or more in terms of biomass. A total of five subadult instars (II to VI) and adult males and females were identified from instar analysis based on sizes and morphological characteristics of specimens collected with 0.10 mm mesh Norpac nets. Data on body length, wet weight and dry weight of each instar are presented. Carbon content of 35 to 48% of dry weight, and nitrogen content of 5.3 to 7.3% of dry weight, were recorded on fresh, freeze-dried specimens of selected instars (subadult Instars IV to VI, adult females). Water and ash contents of mixed specimens of these four instars were 76% of wet weight and 25% of dry weight, respectively. Feasibility of laboratory maintenance ofC. pseudodiscophora was tested, and it produced characteristic “J” shaped faecal pellets. Oxygen consumption rates of subadult instars V and VI, and adult female ranged 0.011 to 0.021µl O2 ind.−1 h−1 at 1 °C, or 2.9 to 6.1µl O2 (mg body N)−0.85 h−1 in terms of Adjusted Metabolic Rate (AMRo 2). There was no appreciable metabolic reduction inC. pseudodiscophora compared to other ostracods, despite their mesopelagic life mode. Subdominance in total zooplankton and nonreduced metabolic activity ofC. pseudodiscophora suggest that this species may be an important link in mesopelagic energy-flow and matter cycling in the Japan Sea.

    Notes: Abstract Life cycle of the mesopelagic copepod Pareuchaeta elongata was investigated combining laboratory rearing data on the eggs, nauplii, and early copepodites with field growth data on the late copepodites. Examination and incubation at near the in situ temperature (0.5°C) of egg sacs collected from the field indicated that the clutch size was 13 to 24 eggs (mean: 20), hatching time was 39.4d (mean), and hatchability was low (mean: 28.5%). The development time at 0.5°C was 2.4 d for Nauplius Stage 1 (N1), 4.6 d for N2, 6.2 d for N3. 7.4 d for N4, 7.1 d for N5, 20.8 d for N6, 36.7 d for Copepodite Stage 1 (C1) and 65.3 d for C2. From the numerical analysis of seasonal samples collected from the field, the development time was estimated as 1 mo for C3, 2 mo for C4 and 2.5 mo for C5. Thus, the egg hatching time plus the integrated development time by stage was 355 d or nearly 1 yr (i.e. span of one life cycle). Duration of the C6 (adult) was estimated as〉2.5 mo. Combining the present data on development times of each stage with published data on the major spawning season (August to October) and ontogenetic migration, a schematic representation of the life cycle of this copepod was developed. Between-stage comparison of wet, dry, and ash-free dry weights of all developmental stages of preserved wild specimens revealed that there is almost no gain in weight during naupliar stages, and the greatest weight increment over the life cycle was during the C4 stage. The present results are compared with those for the same and related species living in other regions.
