    Notes: Nonplanar silicon oxidation in a dry O2+NF3 gas mixture has been investigated. Oxide morphologies at silicon corners following 800 °C oxidation in dry O2 and in dry O2+NF3 gas are observed using a scanning electron microscope. While a serious decrease in oxide thickness at convex silicon corners is observed following oxidation in dry O2, no inhibition of oxide growth occurs and the Si/SiO2 interface is smoothly rounded off at the corners following oxidation in dry O2+NF3. The effects of adding NF3 gas to a dry O2 atmosphere on nonplanar oxidation are discussed. Furthermore, a sacrificial oxidation in dry O2+NF3 prior to forming the thin capacitor oxide is found to be very effective for reducing the oxide leakage current for a trenched capacitor.

    Notes: The new monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) E401, E811, E907 and E919 were prepared and characterized. These recognized an extracellular domain (amino acids No. 292–370) on the human c-erbB-2 gene product. Utilizing MoAb E811 and MoAb E919, a double determinant immunoassay (DDIA) was established to detect the soluble and the shed forms of the c-erbB-2 molecule. The levels of circulating erbB-2 antigen in the sera of patients with benign diseases and healthy controls were very low. The incidence of positivity for shed c-erbB-2 antigen in gastric cancer, eolonic cancer, gall-bladder caneer, pancreatic eancer and other cancers were 7.4%, 4.2%, 0%, 6.7% and 0%, respectively. Four of 54 patients with gastric carcinoma showed high levels of serum c-erbB-2 antigen. They belonged to clinical stage IV and their histological types were all well differentiated adenoeareinomas (two papillary and two tubular adenoeareinomas). Furthermore, the incidence of positive staining in gastric cancer was 34.6%; higher than that for shedding erbB-2 antigen. Most of the cases v-hich showed erbB-2 expression on cells were well-differentiated adenoeareinomas. Meanwhile, the distribution of erbB-2 antigen was limited in normal tissues. The results suggest that the expression of erbB-2 antigen is largely restricted to adenocarcinoma cells. It may not shed easily from these cells, and therefore It may be a very useful target molecule for passive immunotherapy.

    Notes: Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), a member of the immunoglobulin supergene family, is known to play an important role in inflammatory diseases. Using a previously developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with two monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against human ICAM-1, levels of soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) were measured in sera from patients with collagen diseases and in synovial fluids (SF) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although the results did not demonstrate that RA and other collagen diseases, as a group, had significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 in sera as compared with healthy controls, 21 of 138 cases (15%) with collagen diseases and 11 out of 57 patients (19%) with RA clearly showed higher levels of sICAM-1 in the sera. Comparisons between RA patients of radiological stages I and II and between stage I and other stages showed significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 in the sera of patients in the latter stages. RA patients with vasculitis and/or pneumonitis showed significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 than those without vasculitis or pneumonitis. Significant correlations were demonstrated between sICAM-1 and the factors IgG-RF, IgM-RF, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and TNF-α in sera of RA patients. In addition, it was noted that the levels of sICAM-1 in SF were as high as those in the sera of patients with RA.

    Notes: Measurements of the refractive index of thermally grown oxide after annealing reveal that the density relaxation of the oxide is well described by a stretched exponential decay function. The experiments of two-step oxidation show that oxygen diffusivity in the oxide exponentially decreases with the oxide density. The relation between the oxide density and the refractive index is well expressed by a simple power relation rather than the Lorenz–Lorenz formula.

    Notes: Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most important antigen-presenting cells. Many recent studies have compared the function of immature DCs (iDCs) and mature DCs (mDCs), but there have been few reports of the molecular changes that occur in DCs during maturation. Here, we report on differential gene expression in iDCs generated from peripheral blood monocytes compared with mDCs. Gene expression was evaluated using the differential display method after activation of iDCs with a low concentration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce maturation. Proteasome subunit alpha type 3 (PSMA3), transcription factor EC (TFEC) isoform and BTK region clone 2f10-rpi were transiently upregulated. Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase and CD63 antigen were upregulated for at least 24 h. Neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) and transforming growth factor-β-induced 68 kDa protein were downregulated. This is the first report of NAIP expression in human DCs. By comparing the expression of NAIP with that of other members of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family and the Bcl-2 family, only NAIP was found to be strongly expressed in iDCs before stimulation by LPS. PSMA3 was also induced in the DCs stimulated with immune complex. These findings might contribute to our understanding of DC maturation and the effectiveness of DC-based vaccines.

    Notes: Background Airway remodelling in asthma such as subepithelial fibrosis is thought to be the repair process that follows the continuing injury as of chronic airway inflammation. However, how acute allergic inflammation causes tissue injury in the epithelial basement membrane in asthmatic airways remains unclear. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) capable of degrading almost all of the extracellular matrix components have been demonstrated to be involved in cell migration through the basement membrane in vivo and in vitro.Objective We investigated the alterations of matrix construction and the role of MMPs in matrix degradation in the subepithelium during acute allergic airway inflammation.Methods Airway inflammation, the ultrastructure of the subepithelium and injury of types III and IV collagen in tracheal tissues from ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice after OVA inhalation with or without the administration of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) and dexamethasone were evaluated by cell counting in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids, electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry, respectively.Results The disruption of the lamina densa and matrix construction and the decrease of the immunoreactivity for type IV collagen in subepithelium were observed in association with the accumulation of inflammatory cells in airways 3 days after OVA inhalation. This disorganization of the matrix components in the subepithelium, as well the cellular accumulation, was abolished by the administration of TIMP-2 and dexamethasone. The immunoreactivity for type IV collagen in the subepithelium in OVA-inhaled mice returned to the level of that in saline-inhaled mice 10 days after inhalation in association with a decrease of the cell numbers in the BAL fluid. The immunoreactivity for type III collagen was changed neither 3 nor 10 days after OVA inhalation.Conclusion These results suggest that epithelial basement membrane gets injured by, at least in part, MMPs as a consequence of cell transmigration through the membrane during acute allergic airway inflammation.
