Notes: Summary Reported here are two siblings with sudanophilic leukodystrophy occurring in early infancy. Soon after birth, high fever, distension of the abdomen and spasticity of the extremities were noted. Neurologic disorders, frequent convulsive seizures, and malnutrition caused both siblings to die at the age of 3 and 6 months, respectively. Neuropathologic examination of the brain revealed diffuse demyelination in the cerebral and cerebellar white matter as well as a disturbance of the myelination, especially in the descending pathway. Numerous sudanophilic lipids and glial fibers proliferated in the demyelinated areas. neurochemically, there was a marked decrease in all lipid components, cholesterol, phospholipids, and glycolipids and an increase in cholesterol ester. Fatty-acid composition of cerebroside and sulfatide, especially that of long-chain acids, was within normal range, unlike the fatty-acid composition found in connatal Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease. The brain damage in postnatal infant caused by frequent convulsive seizures and the severe demyelination in the cerebral and cerebellar white matter in both patients are discussed. The cases of sudanophilic leukodystrophy and Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease occurring in children under 5 years of age are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract The seasonal behavior of both vegetative cells and cysts of dinophytes Scrippsiella spp., mostly S. trochoidea, which is the dominant group among dinoflagellate populations in Onagawa Bay on the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan, was investigated between 1990 and 1992. The germination of the cysts after 8 d incubation under favorable laboratory conditions was examined using the extinction dilution method. Incessant germination occurred throughout the year, but the germination ratio (no. of germinable cysts/total cysts) varied seasonally with a marked fluctuation during summer when vegetative cells in the water column were abundant. Although such fluctuation largely reflects the variable flux of newly deposited immature cysts produced by the vegetative cells, the regulation of germination caused by a lowered saturation of dissolved oxygen (DO) under thermally stratified conditions was also suggested. During winter, while the cysts germinated in the laboratory, vegetative cells were not found in the water column. These facts suggest that germination in situ is regulated by low temperature in winter and possibly by lowered DO and by cyst age as well in summer. Such regulation prevents simultaneous germination of all the cysts, which is disadvantageous for the population because it would be more difficult to survive adverse conditions such as successive nutrient depletion and higher grazing risk.

Notes: Abstract The onset of autosomal recessive-type parkinsonism is usually at a relatively young age (i.e. before the age of 40 years) and is thus called autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism (AR-JP). Here the clinical features, laboratory and imaging findings, neuropathological features, differential diagnosis and treatment options of AR-JP are described. We have treated 17 patients with AR-JP; they presented with sleep benefit in parkinsonian symptoms and foot dystonia as specific signs. The parkinsonian triad was mild, and the tremor was usually fine postural. A postural instability and adiadochokinesia were rather prominent. Gait freezing and hyperreflexia were frequently observed. The levodopa efficacy was sufficient and the clinical course was benign; however, choreic limb dyskinesia and the wearing-off phenomenon occurred easily. A neuropathological examination of one of the patients revealed that in the substantia nigra pars compacta and locus ceruleus, the number of neurons was low, and the content of neuromelanin in the neurons was small. There were focal degenerations (e.g. gliosis and extraneuronal free melanin) in the substantia nigra pars compacta. In addition, Lewy bodies were not found anywhere in the central nervous system. Considering these specific clinical and neuropathological findings, AR-JP seems to constitute one disease entity.

Notes: In order to establish an objective method of evaluating ladies' garment fabrics by connecting the mechanical properties of ladies' garment fabrics to subjective evaluation, subjective assessments were examined by judges who work at textile mills or in the textile trade. We examined a method of deriving objective equations, a total hand value (THV) equation and a total appearance value (TAV) equation. The THV equation was derived directly from the mechanical properties of the fabrics and the TAV equation was derived from three mechanical parameters which are related to the beauty of garment appearance. In the case of the THV objective equation, the accuracy of regression was high within the same groups of judges; however, in the case of the TAV objective equation, accuracy was slightly low. Because there were few subjects and that caused deviation, the accuracy of prediction was slightly low; however, the objective evaluation was adequate.

Notes: Effects of Ti addition to a Cr underlayer on the magnetic and crystallographic properties of Co–Cr–Pt media were investigated. C/Co–Cr20–Pt (Pt: 8 and 12 at. %)/Cr–Ti (Ti: 0–30 at. %) films were deposited on textured Ni–P/Al–Mg substrates by dc magnetron sputtering. In-plane Hc and S* increased as Ti was added to the Cr underlayer. The media noise at 167 kFCI decreased with an increase of the Ti content from 0 to 20 at. %. The normalized media noise of Co72Cr20Pt8/Cr75Ti25 media was 20% lower than that of Co68Cr20Pt12/Cr90Ti10 media where their coercivity and S* were almost the same. Further increase of the Ti caused the increase of the media noise. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed that average grain size of Cr–Ti films decreased from 30 to 20 nm with the increase of the Ti content from 0 to 20 at. %. The activation volume of Co68Cr20Pt12 films measured from the time dependences of remanence coercivity decreased by 30% as the Ti content increased from 0 to 20 at. %. The reduction of media noise is probably due to the decrease of the magnetic switching volume which is caused by the reduction of the grain size of Cr–Ti underlayers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties and microstructure of barium ferrite films (BaFe12O19) coated by a sol-gel technique involving a spin coating of metal-organic compounds are investigated. The in-plane magnetic properties and the grain size are controlled by a Fe/Ba atomic ratio in the coating solution and annealing conditions. The in-plane coercivity increases as the decrease of the Fe/Ba ratio and the increase of the annealing temperature. Maximum value of 4–6 kOe is obtained at the Fe/Ba ratio of 2–8 with the annealing at 900 °C for 10 min. At these preparation conditions, the c axis of the hexagonal barium ferrite is slightly oriented parallel to the film plane. The grain size decreases as the decrease of the Fe/Ba ratio. The films with the Fe/Ba ratio of 4–6 show a grain size of almost one-tenth of that of the sputtered films without additives such as Cr2O3 or CoTi. The smaller grain size of the sol-gel-coated films is probably due to the high nucleation density at the annealing process. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Co-alloy films deposited by KrF excimer laser ablation were investigated. A pulsed laser beam with wavelength of 248 nm was focused onto the deposition targets which were fixed in the vacuum chamber. Cr underlayer and Co-alloy films were successively deposited at a rate of 0.012 nm/pulse. The film surface was microscopically smooth compared to the sputtered films. This may be due to the low shadowing effect during the laser deposition. The composition of the film was reproducibly controlled, though there was a slight difference between the composition of film and target material. The coercivities of Co-Cr-Pt/Cr films formed on the Si and Ni-P substrates at 250 °C were 130 and 220 Oe, which were about one-fifth of the coercivity of sputtered films. Crystallographic analyses showed that Cr underlayer had no crystal orientation, and Co-alloy film consisted of fine fcc-type crystal grains. Low coercivity of the laser-deposited film is probably due to the lack of hcp Co phase.
