    Notes: Abstract The acute effects of combined exposure to temperature increase and chlorination on a neritic marine copepod, Acartia omorii Bradford (collected offshore of Onjuku, Japan in 1982), were investigated in the laboratory. Continuous flow exposure and batch exposure modes were compared. Based on the results of continuous flow experiments, the 24-h median lethal concentration (24-h LC50, in mg l-1) of total residual chlorine was estimated using the multiple regression equation below, with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.955: 24-h LC50=2.988-0.034 dT-1.611 log10 t where dT is temperature rise (°C) and t is exposure duration (min). In batch experiments, the predictive power of the multiple regression equation was reduced, probably due to variations in chlorine concentration during exposure duration.

    Notes: Abstract  Mechanical properties of titanium thin films of 0.5 μm thickness and aluminum thin films of 1.0 μm thickness, microfabricated by magnetron sputtering, were measured by using a novel tensile machine. These thin films are difficult to handle because they are fragile, so the thin film specimens were fabricated by using semiconductor manufacturing technology in a silicon frame to protect them. The test section of these specimens was 300 μm in width and 1400 μm in gauge length. By gripping the thin film specimen with a new device using a micrometer, it could be mounted on the tensile machine easily. The stress-strain diagrams of both thin films were measured continuously in the atmosphere at room temperature. The experimental results indicated that the titanium thin film and the aluminum thin film had a smaller breaking elongation although they had a larger tensile strength than bulk pure titanium and bulk pure aluminum, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanism of isotope scrambling was studied for infrared multiphoton dissociation of trifluoromethane-h (CHF3) and-d (CDF3) mixtures by a CO2 TEA laser. The CO2 laser was tuned to the R(14) line of the 001–100 transition, where CDF3 absorbs the light selectively. Although the highly selective decomposition of CDF3 occurred at low partial pressures of CDF3, significant decomposition of CHF3 was also observed with increasing pressure of CDF3. The selectivity (s) was found to depend only on the pressure of CDF3, a resonant molecule, but not on that of CHF3, an off-resonant molecule. The mechanism involving the formation of two kinds of vibrationally excited molecules, unimolecular decomposition (rate constantk 2 ),V-V energy transfer (k 3b), and collisional deactivation leads to the simple relationship,s=1+(k 2 /k 3b)/[CDF3], which can explain qualitatively the observed results. The ratiok 2 /k 3b has values of 20–200 Torr, probably depending on experimental conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Carbon-13 isotope selectivities and specific decomposition yields in the infrared multiple-photon decomposition of CHF3 and CDF3 were examined as a function of wave number using a CO2 TEA laser. The observed maximum selectivities were 30 for CHF3 and 55 for CDF3. The specific decomposition yields in CDF3 were considerably larger than those in CHF3.

    Notes: Abstract The infrared multiple-photon single-frequency decomposition (IRMPD) of CBrClF2 was examined as functions of laser wavenumber, laser fluence, and partial pressure of CBrClF2. The initial step was the scission of a C-Br bond. In the presence of O2 the carbon-containing product was CF2O and its subsequent hydrolysis gave CO2. The initial dissociation was highly 13C selective at wavenumbers below 1014 cm−1. CBrClF2 decomposed at relatively low fluences as compared to CHClF2. However, the decomposition yield rapidly decreased with increasing pressure. In the large-scale irradiation experiment using about 8 J pulse at 1 Hz, we obtained a carbon yield of 0.41 μmol per pulse at a 13C-atom fraction of 17% for a mixture of 10 Torr CBrClF2 and 10 Torr O2, and a carbon yield of 0.17 μmol per pulse at a fraction of 29% for a mixture of 20 Torr CBrClF2 and 20 Torr O2. The IRMPD of CHClF2 gave a carbon yield of 0.18 μmol per pulse at 48% for 10 Torr neat CHClF2 and yield of 0.25 μmol at 52% for 20 Torr CHClF2. The large-scale irradiation experiment was also carried out for mixtures of CBr2F2 and O2. CHClF2 is the most productive of 13C.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les auteurs décrivent la coexistence dans un même noeud lymphatique de cellules tumorales provenant de deux cancers différents. L'observation est celle d'un sujet masculin de 83 ans décédé d'une lymphangite carcinomateuse pulmonaire cinq mois après gastrectomie pour cancer. L'autopsie montra l'existence de métastases lymphonodales d'un cancer prostatique. Histologiquement, les métastases du cancer prostatique présentaient un aspect cribriforme tandis que les cellules d'origine gastrique dessinaient des formations papillaires et tubulaires. En immunohistochimie les premières se révélaient positives à l'antigène prostatique spécifique (PSA), et les autres à l'antigène carcino-embryonnaire (ACE). Cinquante et un noeuds rétropéritonéaux et pelviens furent examinés : la coexistence des deux types de cellules métastatiques fut observée dans deux noeuds. Les deux types se retrouvaient associés au niveau du hile, fait confirmé par les réactions immunohistochimiques. Les deux noeuds intéressés étaient situés dans la région préaortique et latéro-aortiques gauche et appartenaient au groupe des noeuds proximaux qui collectent à la fois la lymphe des organes pelviens et celle des organes digestifs intra-abdominaux.
    Notes: Summary The coexistence of two differently originating cancer cells within the same lymph node is reported. An 83-year-old male patient died from severe carcinomatous lymphangitis of the lungs five months after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. At autopsy, prostatic cancer metastasis to lymph node was found. Histologically, the prostatic carcinoma cells had a cribriform pattern and the gastric cells showed papillary and tubular features. Immunohistochemically, the former was immunoreactive to prostate specific antigen (PSA) and the latter was stained positively for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Fifty-one of the retroperitoneal and intrapelvic lymph nodes were histologically examined; the coexistence of both types of cancer cells was found in two lymph nodes. Both types were adjoined at the hilum, as was also confirmed by an immunohistochemical double staining technique. These two lymph nodes were located in the pre-aortic and left lateral aortic areas, and they belonged to the terminal lymph node group of both the intra-pelvic and intra-abdominal intestinal organs.

    Notes: Abstract A facultatively alkalophilic Bacillus strain, YN-2000, is able to grow over a wide pH range, from 7.0–10.5, and was suggested to regulate its cytoplasmic pH by alkalinization and acidification systems at neutral and alkaline pH, respectively [9]. Two kinds of pH-sensitive mutants were isolated after treatment with N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. One mutant was neutral-sensitive and unable to grow below pH 8. The other was alkaline-sensitive and unable to grow above pH 9. The neutral- and alkaline-sensitive mutants were suggested to be unable to regulate cytoplasmic pH at neutral and alkaline pH, respectively.
