Notes: Nonlocal effects are observed in a number of transient transport studies in tokamaks and stellarators. In this paper some consequences of nonlocality are discussed on the basis of a heuristic model for the electron heat diffusivity (χe). The main consequence is the presence of an additional ("missing'') heating power term (p˜χ) in the heat transport equation. Suitable combinations of p˜χ and modulated power profiles should give rise to detectable effects in modulated heating experiments such as those planned on the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) [R. Andreani et al., in Fusion Technology, Proceedings of the 16th Symposium, London, 1990, edited by B. E. Keen, M. Huguet, and R. Hemsworth (Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 218]. Failure to properly include p˜χ effects (if present) can lead to an overestimate of χe from heat wave propagation analysis. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The problem of the propagation of a harmonic temperature perturbation in a plasma with both diffusive and nondiffusive energy transport is addressed. The energy flux is modeled by two (radially varying) effective coefficients for the diffusive and nondiffusive transport, and the effects of perturbed energy sinks and of cylindrical geometry are taken into account. A simple, local relationship is found between the two transport coefficients and the gradients of the phase and amplitude of the temperature perturbation. This relationship can be used for the interpretation of heating modulation experiments, provided data at different modulation frequencies are available. Since a harmonic density perturbation in a plasma follows a similar linearized transport equation, a similar model can be applied also to density modulation experiments.

Notes: Resistive tearing mode instabilities are driven by unfavorable current gradients at the position where the safety factor q is rational. Their dynamics in the presence of radio-frequency (rf) power absorption in the electron-cyclotron wavelength range is investigated by means of a hybrid transport-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code and analytic considerations. A panorama of possibilities of stabilization and control of disruptions in tokamaks is presented.
