    Virtual factory: an integrated approach to manufacturing systems modeling (2001)

    Notes: Rapid product/process realization and enterprise integration have been identified among the major imperatives for enabling the next generation manufacturing paradigm. This paper proposes a virtual factory modeling approach to support these imperatives. A virtual factory is defined as an integrated simulation model of major subsystems in a factory that considers the factory as a whole and provides an advanced decision support capability. It seeks to go beyond the typical modeling of one sub-system at a time, such as the manufacturing model, the business process model and/or the communication network model developed individually and in isolation. A basic virtual factory model of a semi-conductor backend factory has been developed for concept demonstration. Application examples are used to demonstrate the integration between business processes and manufacturing system performance. Future work will move further towards the development of the complete virtual factory and its industry applications.

    Notes: Consumers purchase conspicuous goods to satisfy not just material needs but also social needs such as prestige. In an attempt to meet these social needs, marketing managers of conspicuous goods like cars, perfumes, and watches employ several strategies to highlight the exclusivity of their products. These strategies include using exclusive distribution, charging high prices, and limiting production. Further, marketing textbooks suggest that the demand curve for prestige goods could be upward sloping and therefore firms should not set prices which are ``too low''. In this paper we examine whether the desire for exclusivity can lead to an upward-sloping demand curve. We also investigate how social factors such as the desire for exclusivity and conformity affect prices and firms' profits. To analyze these issues, we develop a model of conspicuous consumption using the rational expectations framework. We consider two different market structures: monopoly and duopoly. Our results shows that the desire for exclusivity can lead to an upward-sloping demand curve when there is a segment of consumers who are (weakly) conformists. The impact of exclusivity and conformity on prices and profits varies with the market structure. Interestingly, an increase in perceived functional differentiation of products consumed by snobs could decrease firms' profits and prices. In the laboratory, we observe an upward sloping demand curve for snobs, in both the monopoly and duopoly setting. We also track consumer's expectations, and find on average that subjects' beliefs are consistent with the observed outcome and the rational expectations equilibrium solution.

    Notes: Transient capacity measurements between 77 and 300 K were performed to study the relaxation of optically induced inversion layers in metal-insulator-n silicon structures with 23–176-A(ring) oxide thickness. The observed fluence of the charge in interface and inversion layer exhibits as a function of time three distinct maxima. A theoretical study of the two governing nonlinear differential equations—Shockley–Read–Hall recombination in interface traps, and continuity equation for holes in the valence band—shows that the first peak is caused by recombination in silicon-bulk traps while the second and third peaks are generated by tunneling recombination in interface traps. A quantitative analysis of the data shows satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory.

    Notes: A number of modeling and simulation tools have been developed and more are being developed for incident management applications. Each of these tools has focused on a specific aspect of the selected problem, for example, the simulation of plume dispersion. A set of tools that can help develop and evaluate coordination among plans for multiple aspects can substantially improve incident management capabilities. These tools need to be made interoperable and integrated together to reduce the time and effort for their use. A framework is proposed to facilitate application of modeling and simulation to incident management. The framework addresses incident management on three axes - incident, domain and lifecycle phase. It can help identify the gaps in existence of modeling and simulation tools and help define the integration needs. It is designed to allow use of modeling and simulation across the incident management lifecycle including prevention, preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. The framework can be rapidly implemented with the development of interoperability standards for modeling and simulation tools for incident management. Together, the framework and interoperability standards can significantly increase the use of modeling and simulation for incident management. In turn, it will help improve the nation's incident management capabilities.

    Notes: Summary Penicillium occitanis strain Pol6, a mutant developed for hyperproduction of cellulase and pectinase enzymes was used for the study of extracellular pectinase production when pectins from different sources (apple and citrus) and with varying degree of esterification (DE) were used as inducers. Highly esterified citrus pectins were found to be suitable substrates for polygalacturonase, pectinase and pectin methyl esterase production, while low esterified citrus pectin favoured pectin lyase (PL) production. Apple pectins induced other hydrolytic enzymes (e.g., β-1,3-glucanase, β-glucosidase, β-galactosidase), in addition to pectolytic enzymes. Moreover, the combination of high and low esterified citrus pectins induced the production of a complete pectinase complex. The extent of degradation of the substrate and the affinity for PL decreased with decreasing DE irrespective of the source. There was no evidence of PL activity in this strain. No significant effect of cations (Ca++, Mn++, Na+) on PL activity was observed. However, EDTA (100 mm) inhibited 50% of the activity, when tested on highly esterified (rapid set citrus) pectin.

    Notes: Summary A transformation system for the thermophilic cellulolytic fungus Talaromyces sp. CL240 has been developed, using the phleomycin resistance gene from Streptoalloteichus hindustanus (Sh ble) as a dominant selectable marker. The plasmids (pAN8-1 and pUT720) carrying the Sh ble gene under the control of the Aspergillus nidulans glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gpd) promoter, allowed selection of phleomycin-resistant transformants. A new promoter sequence cloned from chromosomal DNA of Trichoderma reesei (pUT737) was also able to drive efficient expression of the Sh ble gene in Talaromyces sp. CL240, resulting in the selection of transformants that were highly resistant to phleomycin.

    Notes: Abstract Overgeneralization is a major issue in the identification of grammars for formal languages from positive data. Different formulations of generalization and specialization strategies have been proposed to address this problem, and recently there has been a flurry of activity investigating such strategies in the context of indexed families of recursive languages. The present paper studies the power of these strategies to learn recursively enumerable languages from positive data. In particular, the power of strong-monotonic, monotonic, and weak-monotonic (together with their dual notions modeling specialization) strategies are investigated for identification of r.e. languages. These investigations turn out to be different from the previous investigations on learning indexed families of recursive languages and at times require new proof techniques. A complete picture is provided for the relative power of each of the strategies considered. An interesting consequence is that the power of weak-monotonic strategies is equivalent to that of conservative strategies. This result parallels the scenario for indexed classes of recursive languages. It is also shown that any identifiable collection of r.e. languages can also be identified by a strategy that exhibits the dual of weak-monotonic property. An immediate consequence of the proof of this result is that if attention is restricted to infinite r.e. languages, then conservative strategies can identify every identifiable collection.
