Summary 1. On the basis of chromatographical and enzymatic tests of pig serum, the only substrate feasible for lactate formation is glucose. 2. Erythrocytes of pigs incubated in their own serum form lactate for more than two hours and only then do they show symptoms of substrate depletion despite high concentrations of glucose. 3. Washed crythrocytes incubated in a phosphate-buffer-Ringer's solution do not form lactate and the ATP decreases. 4. Of the various substrates tested, undamaged erythrocytes only metabolize purine-nucleosides and, to a slight extent, D-erythrose. Hemolysates only metabolize ribose-5-phosphate. 5. The break-down of purine-nucleosides to lactate occurs just as rapidly as in human erythrocytes.

Zusammenfassung 1. Im Serum von Schweinen kommt nach chromatographischen und enzymatischen Untersuchungen als Substrat für die Lactatbildung nur Glucose in Betracht. 2. Schweineerythrozyten, inkubiert im eigenen Serum, bilden über 2 Stunden Lactat und zeigen erst danach trotz hoher Glucosekonzentrationen Symptome der Substraterschöpfung. 3. Gewaschene Erythrozyten, inkubiert in Phosphatpuffer-Ringer-Lösung, bilden kein Lactat, und ATP fällt ab. 4. Von den untersuchten Substraten werden von intakten Erythrozyten nur Purinnucleoside und in geringem Maße D-Erythrose verwertet, in Hämolysaten Ribose-5-phosphat. 5. Der Abbau von Purinnucleosiden zu Lactat erfolgt genauso schnell wie in menschlichen Erythrozyten.
