    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. A macroinvertebrale survey of various habitats (e.g. riffles, pools, tree roots) at sixteen sites in the Teifi catchment in September 1981 yielded 217 taxa excluding Hydracarina and Chironomidae.2. Sites with the greatest number of habitats were generally rich in taxa and supported the highest number of ‘rare’ species, the latter generally being associated with vegetation. However, species were not generally restricted to particular habitats although ecdyonurid mayflies predominated in riffles and one leptocerid caddisfly was principally collected from tree roots.3. Four groups of taxa which characterized three habitat groups were established using classification procedures and it was concluded that three habitat types (eroding, depositing and vegetation) should be sampled to describe adequately the macroinvertebrate fauna at each site.4. Three attributes (species richness, species rarity and site uniqueness) were used to establish the conservational value of each site; in general, the main river and one lowland tributary were of highest conservational significance.5. Multiple regression analyses were used to establish significant relationships between the three attributes and environmental features such as number of habitats, altitude, river width, pH and total hardness. Such relationships may facilitate a rapid assessment of resource value without expensive biological survey.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Stomatogenesis was studied in the heterotrich ciliate Blepharisma japonicum stained with protargol. During binary fission not only is a new oral apparatus made for the posterior daughter, but the already existing oral apparatus of the parent cell is reorganized, i.e. partially disassembled and then subsequently reassembled to provide a functional feeding apparatus for the anterior daughter cell. These morphogenetic events, requiring 21/2 to 3 hr, are complete by the time the anterior and posterior daughters separate.In preparation for division, an oral anlage is formed by the rapid proliferation of kinetosomes along 4–5 stomatogenic kinetics directly subtending the cytostome. This field of randomly oriented kinetosomes ultimately gives rise to the feeding apparatus of the posterior daughter cell. Early in division, the oral anlage separates into 2 longitudinal fields of kinetosomes: one is destined to give rise to the undulating membrane and the other forms the adoral zone of membranelles. Shortly after the anlage is established posterior to the cytostome, reorganization of the existing functional mouth is initiated. The morphologic changes associated with this dedifferentiation-redifferentiation sequence lead to the formation of an oral apparatus for the anterior daughter and cannot be distinguished from those characteristically seen during physiologic reorganization.

    Notes: Abstract The anode products formed when electrowinning lead from lead sulphate dissolved in LiCl-KCl eutectic have been determined when using a carbonaceous anode. Results indicate that electrolytic decomposition proceeds by the overall reaction $$PbSO_4 + C \to Pb + CO_2 + SO_2 $$ However at low current densities the CO2 content increases by the reaction $$C + SO_2 \rightleftharpoons CO_2 + \frac{1}{v}S_v $$ The secondary reactions of the cathodically produced lead also increase the CO2 and sulphur yields according to the following overall reactions $$2PbO + C \to 2Pb + CO_2 $$ and $$PbS \to Pb + \frac{1}{v}S_v $$ All the above electrochemical reactions are extensively polarized and chlorine co-evolution starts at low current densities.
