Notes: The Korean High Speed Train (KHST) has been tested on the Kyongbu high speed line andthe Honam conventional line since 2002. A data acquisition system was developed to test and provethe dynamic performance of the KHST, and the system has been found to be very efficient inacquiring multi-channel data from accelerometers located all over the train. Also presented in thispaper is an analysis procedure which is simple and efficient in analyzing the acceleration dataacquired during the on-line test of the KHST. The understanding of system vibration mode for arailway vehicle is essential to evaluate the characteristics of a dynamic system and to diagnose thedynamic problems of the vehicle system during tests and operations. Methods based on homogeneouslinear systems are not realistic because real systems have nonlinear characteristics and are stronglydependent on environmental conditions. In this paper an efficient method of vibration analysis hasbeen proposed and applied for the KHST to evaluate its vibration mode characteristics. The resultsshow that this method is suitable to estimate the system vibration modes of the KHST

Notes: Radix salvia miltiorrhiza is a commonly used herbal medicine in China, and tanshinoneIIA is one of the major active ingredients. Nano Radix salvia miltiorrhiza particles were successfullyprepared by high speed centrifugal sheering (HSCS) technology, and the prepared nanoparticlessuspension was subsequently spray-dried. The different properties of nano particles and raw powderwere systematically studied by laser light scattering granulometric analyzer, TEM, SEM and FTIR.The extractive quantity of tanshinone IIA was determined by high-performance liquidchromatography (HPLC). The results illustrate that raw Radix salvia miltiorrhiza powder can beultrafinely ground to nanosize within 50min, and the molecular structure of active ingredients doesn’tchange after being ground. Furthermore, the active ingredients can dissolve out directly and fully, andthe extractive ratio of tanshinone IIA increases 28.6% by HSCS processing. It is valuable to combinenanotechnology and TCM to improve the bioavailability and rapid releasing

Notes: In designing the structures of railway rolling stocks, deterministic methods associated withthe concept of a safety factor have been traditionally used. The deterministic approaches based on themean values of applied loads and material properties have been used as safety verification for thedesign of the car body structures. The uncertainties in the applied loading for the high speed train andthe strength of new materials in the structure require the application of probabilistic approaches toensure fatigue safety in the desired system. Pressure loadings acting on the car body when the trainpasses through tunnels show reflected pressure waves for high-speed trains and they may cause afatigue failure in vehicle bodies. In this paper, it is proposed that a fatigue design and assessmentmethod based on a structural reliability that deals with the loading of pressure variations on a railwayvehicle reflected in tunnels and the strength variations of material. Equation for the fatigue reliabilityindex has been formulated to calculate the reliability assessment of a vehicle body under fluctuatingpressure loadings in a tunnel. Considered in this formulation are the pressure distributioncharacteristics, the fatigue strength distribution characteristics, and the concept of stress-transferfunctions due to the pressure loading

Notes: MoSi2 is one of the few intermetallics to have potential for further systems. However, the use ofMoSi2 has been hindered due to the brittle nature of the material at low temperatures, inadequate creepresistance at high temperatures, accelerated (pest) oxidation at temperatures between 450~ 550°C. In thisinvestigation Mo(Al,Si2)/Ti3SiC2 composites has been prepared by reaction hot-pressing from Mo, Si,SiC, Ti, Al powder mixture under different temperatures. XRD results show that the main products areMo(Si,Al)2 and Ti3SiC2. Part of TiC and SiC also appeared at low treating temperature. With the treatingtemperature increasing SiC disappeared. No evidence show lattice change of Mo(Si,Al)2. It must be theresults of sufficient Al added. The electrical conductivity properties were also investigated. Samplestreating under different temperatures showed different changes. Samples under high treating temperatureshowed a near linear change ranging from 27~800°C and Samples under low treating temperature showeda nonlinear change

Notes: The combustion synthesis and densification process for titanium diboride and iron layeredmaterials in the process of Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of titanium diboride, variation of the initial temperature, amount of diluent and particle size of raw materials had effect onthe adiabatic temperature, fraction of melted product and propagation rate of the combustion process, were studied by theoretical calculation and experimental analysis. The result showed that divided by acombustion temperature 3050K, either in the high temperature range or in the low temperature range, the calculated process activation energies were 140 KJ/mol or 355 KJ/mol respectively, whichrevealed two different reaction process mechanisms. Interfacial bonding between TiB2+Fe cermet andFe substrate was analyzed by EPMA, which showed interfacial bonding of two-layered product wasobtained by the dissolution and the diffusion of Ti in the Fe substrate and joining of Fe binder with Fesubstrate. The fractures of joints took place in the TiB2+Fe cermet layer rather than at the interface

Notes: H beam welds along rolling and transverse direction were investigated withnondestructive testing, mechanical testing and microstructural analysis. Crack and fracture occurred, during guided bend testing, in the specimens welded along rolling direction between flanges of theH beams with higher S content although no defect was detected prior to the bend test. The fractureseemed to be lamellar tearing because of step-like fracture propagation and terrace and wall fractureappearance of the ruptured bend test specimen. On top of this, lamellar tear was already created inthe base metal area near the HAZ before the bend test in microstructural analysis on the welds. Itseems that lamellar tearing occurred in the specimens welded along rolling direction betweenflanges of the H beams with higher S content as cracks were formed and propagated into a ferritephase region in α-γ band structure in combination with low ductility in transverse direction due toMnS inclusions elongated along rolling direction

Notes: Used pipes in various mechanisms and structures are produced from raw material byextruding and drawing. The properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation of apipe produced by these methods are different from the properties of their raw material. Butdesigners use the properties of the raw material because the actual properties of the pipes aredifficult to obtain from testing. Also, the pipe is used after it has been bent in a complex manner andcut to fit it to mechanisms and structures. The bending process, especially, induces deformation ofthe pipe’s section and residual stress, which are involved in the plastic deformation of the bendedpipes. This residual stress affects the pipe’s properties, including its fatigue life. Therefore, it is veryimportant to understand the residual stress of a material. But, the distribution of residual stress of aU-shaped pipe, which is examined in this study, is very complicated and cannot be measuredexactly

Notes: Abstract A numerical method for the Cauchy principal value of the singular integral in BEM is developed using the concept of finite part integration under integral variable transformation. It is applied to the numerical integration on isoparametric element successfully, as shown in the examples in this paper.
