Notes: Abstract The paper describes a design concept and prototype development study for a composite wing access cover panel which may be subjected to high velocity impact loads from burst tyre fragments. A number of design variants were fabricated in unidirectional (UD) carbon fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) using the vacuum forming method. Emphasis in the paper is on the use of impact simulations at the design stage to assess various design concepts for the composite panel using finite element (FE) simulation techniques. These predict a damage state in the structure after impact loading, which allows the panel concepts to be ranked for impact resistance. This led to a successful design concept, which was verified by structural impact tests, in which the CF/PEEK access panel had an impact resistant liner of high performance polyethylene fabric.

Notes: Abstract Block copolymers have been produced by anionic polymerization of caprolactam with end-functionalized soft-block components derived from polymeric polyols. This method of synthesis gives rise to linear segmented block copolymers with alternating polyether soft blocks and polyamide hard blocks. Copolymers with 10–50% w/w of polyether polyol prepolymer have been the particular focus of attention in this work because of their better physical integrity than copolymers of other compositions. Their phase inversion and morphology/property relationships have been examined by means of differential thermal calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). In this work, the polymers have been hand-cast, but the materials do find application in the reaction injection moulding field.

Notes: An attempt has been made to analyse experimentally the unusual copolymerization of butadiene with styrene initiated by Butyllithium in hydrocarbon solvents. The rates of reaction of styrene with polybutadienyllithium have been measured in both the presence and absence of butadiene, and found to be the same. The reaction of butadiene with polystyryllithium is found to be extremely fast. It is thought that the copolymerization can be explained in terms of four normal bimolecular reactions. No recourse has to be taken to preferential absorption at the reaction centre to explain the initial high butadiene content of the copolymer.

Notes: A real-time computer system is described which minimizes the total analysis time in gel permeation chromatography by automatically acquiring the data, performing the necessary calculations and displaying the molecular weight distribution and molecular weight averages as soon as the polymer peak has eluted. The calculation method described here is valid for linear homopolymers only, and does not include corrections for instrumental peak broadening. The experimental results show good reproducibility and precision. On-line changes of the constants and other parameters may be implemented by means of an auxiliary program which runs in parallel with the data analysis program. A system such as that described here is suitable for utilization as a measurement technique in process control applications. The programs are written in CORAL 66 for a Ferranti Argus 700 E computer.

Notes: The main objective of the work is to explore the problem of producing polymers of any desired molecular weight distribution (MWD) in isothermal, solution, “living”, anionic polymerizations carried out in continuous tubular reactors. For this purpose, a novel control scheme was designed and implemented, which involves the periodic operation, of the monomer solution flow rate, with the flow profile automatically derived from the required MWD and other data. For experimental validation, a polymerization rig was especially built that included a process computer and an automatic gel permeation chromatograph. The chromatograph permitted the measurement of the MWD of the reactor effluent in a matter of minutes and the process computer was employed to implement the control policies and to perform the chromatograph data acquisition and reduction. In spite of the practical problems encountered, experiments showed at least a semi-quantitative validity of the method.

Notes: A four-stream computer-controlled reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) machine has been developed that attains high accuracy in dispense ratios throughout the injection period. This machine has been used for novel processing of polyurethanes, offering a route to varying product properties either throughout a shot or on a shotto-shot basis. It also has been used for what appears to be the first production on commercial scale RRIM equipment of a polyurethane-acrylic interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) in commercial cycle times of around 2 min.

Notes: The bands at 2485 and 940 cm-1 observed in the Raman spectra of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole represent the hydrogen-bonded ν(SH) stretching and δ(C-SH) in-plane bending modes, respectively. A quantitative study of the hydrogen bonding was carried out using intensity measurements of the bands assigned to the hydrogen-bonded and the free δ(C-SH) in-plane deformations at 940 and 919 cm-1, respectively, as a function of temperature. The Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectra were recorded over the temperature range 303-403 K using an environmental chamber fitted into the FT Raman sample compartment. The equilibrium constants between the free and the hydrogen-bonded molecules were determined over this temperature range and the average enthalpy for hydrogen-bond formation was obtained (ΔH° = -3.35 ± 0.2 kJ mol-1).
