    Notes: Abstract Since the early 1980s, the eelgrass, Zostera marina L., population in the saline Lake Gevelingen, The Netherlands, is rapidly declining. An earlier study, in which long-term data on eelgrass coverage in this former estuary were correlated with several environmental variables, showed only one significant correlation: coverage was positively related to water column silicon levels. In addition, a negative correlation with salinity was observed, but this was not significant. In the present study, the effect of silicon and the effect of salinity on the development of Z. marina were investigated experimentally. Enhancement of dissolved silicon concentrations in the water did not stimulate Z. marina above-ground production or an increase in final above- and below-ground biomass. The highly significant correlation between eelgrass coverage and water column silicon levels, thus, remains to be explained. The results of the growth experiments did, however, demonstrate a clear effect of salinity on Z. marina growth. Plants cultured at 22 psu showed a higher production of shoots and leaves, resulting in more above-ground biomass, than plants grown at 32 psu. In addition, below-ground biomass was also higher at 22 psu. Measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence, performed with a PAM-fluorometer, indicated a reduction of photosynthesis in the high-salinity treatments. Thus, low salinity stimulates development of Z. marina from Lake Grevelingen. Eelgrass from such a historically estuarine area may be more sensitive to high salinities than other, more marine populations. Recovery of the autochthonous eelgrass population is expected to be favoured when the estuarine conditions of the seagrass area are re-established, or when restoration programmes are carried out with allochthonous ecotypes that are less sensitive to high salinities.

    Notes: Summary The developments of a telemetric device for monitoring intracranial pressure, the Rotterdam Teletransducer, are described. The major problem in telemetric pressure sensing devices consists of diffusion of water into the transducer, resulting in unpredictable zero drift. Therefore, special attention was paid to bonding techniques for sealing the transducer. The results of improved epoxy sealing, active metal brazing and glass bonding are described. In vitro tests showed transducers sealed with epoxy resin to be stable for two months. Using the more complicated tchniques of glass bonding and active metal brazing, hermetic seals could be achieved with stable transducers for over one year. In vivo functioning of the Rotterdam Teletransducer was tested in acute and chronic animal experiments. The in vivo results corresponded to those obtained in the in vitro experiments. Regression analysis between epidural and ventricular fluid pressure showed a one to one ratio. Results of clinical application of the device in 22 patients are described. Accurate depth setting of the transducer on the dura, according to the pressure depth curve, was shown to be essential. The device has also been used with success for non-invasive fontanelle pressure measurements in infants. The depth positioning of the transducer on the fontanelle according to a pressure depth curve is described.

    Notes: Summary ¶ Symptoms of overdrainage, a frequent complication following shunting procedures especially in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), are presumed to be caused by siphoning: gravity-enhanced flow of cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) through shunts in upright position. A critical reappraisal of siphoning and overdrainage (OD) is presented considering the occurrence of subdural hygromas (SDH) encountered in a group of patients shunted for NPH. The patients participated in the multicentre Dutch NPH study: 101 NPH patients were randomised for treatment with shunts with low or medium-high working pressure. Treatment with shunts with low working pressure resulted in an increased incidence of SDH (iSDH). Current physiological concepts of overdrainage are discussed and criticised. A new theory is presented on the basis of general physiological considerations. The theoretical model proposed yields a revised explanation for the origin of extremely low ventricular pressure in the upright position found with overdrainage. The efficacy of siphoning-preventing shunts and subtemporal decompression is explored in the light of the proposed theory.

    Notes: Summary Results of measurementsin vivo of intracranial pressure obtained with a new telemetric epidural pressure transducer are described. The relations of epidural pressure to ventricular fluid pressure are studied in acute experiments and found to be linear, but variable. The functioning of 18 transducers was studied over many months of implantation.

    Notes: T-cell rich B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma) is a morphological variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. It is important to recognize this variant in the differential diagnosis of T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The main differential diagnosis of T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma, nodular and diffuse lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease (lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease), is, however, even more difficult and differentiating criteria are still not satisfactorily defined. Moreover, T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma may not represent a clinicopathological entity. Twelve cases of T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma, selected on the basis of morphology and limited immunohistochemistry without previous knowledge of clinical data, were studied by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction for bcl-2 rearrangements to investigate the histogenetic background. In three of 12 cases, bcl-2 rearrangements were found, strongly suggesting a follicle centre cell origin. In three other cases, a documented history of definite nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease 29 months to 20 years prior to the diagnosis of the lymphoma was present. No differences in growth pattern, residual nodularity, tumour cell distribution, cellular morphology and composition, or immunophenotypical differences were noted in these six cases as compared to the remaining cases. These data underscore the histogenetic diversity in T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma and identify it as a progressed form of lymphoma derived from entities as diverse as follicle centre cell lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease. Moreover, it shows a complete morphological overlap with the diffuse form of lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease and may actually encompass this disease entity.

    Notes: The Long-Term Vision for the Schelde estuary was determined as “the development of a healthy and multifunctional estuarine water system that can be utilized in a sustainable way for human needs.” This Dutch–Flemish managerial plan sets quality targets for the condition of the estuary by the year 2030 and the management measures to achieve them. Targets were developed and integrated from three central perspectives: accessibility of the ports, safety against floods in the densely populated catchment, and ecosystem health. This study focuses on the ecological rehabilitation of the estuary and the creation of sustainable nature, seeking possible alliances with security measures against floods, navigation requisites for port activities, and enhancement of the estuary's educational and recreational values. The estuary and its valley were subdivided into ecologically relevant zones. Key parameters were identified, and a conceptual rehabilitation model was developed, based on a problem analysis. Goals were set in a semiquantified way for most attributes of the estuarine functioning and prioritized for each zone. Rehabilitation measures with maximal contribution to the priority goals were identified for each zone. Spatial analysis of the study area indicated optimal areas for the implementation of these measures. To exemplify the array of possibilities on an ecosystem level, two different rehabilitation plans were proposed, each from a different approach. The potential contribution to the rehabilitation of the estuary was compared for both alternatives.

    Notes: Experimental models using immunization with known haptens have shown that germinal centres develop from only a limited number of precursor cells which expand in an oligoclonal fashion. Using a panel of antibodies raised against the idiotype of follicle centre cell lymphomas and known to be reactive only with a few normal B cells, we could demonstrate that individual clones can be identified within germinal centres of individual follicles of human lymph nodes and tonsils. Therefore also in humans in a non-experimental, natural situation, germinal centres expand in an oligoclonal fashion.
