    Notes: Abstract With the availability of computed tomography (CT), ultrasonography (US), percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), the use of intravenous cholangiography (IVC) has waned. A retrospective study of 69 intravenous cholangiograms performed from 1979 through 1982 assessed the utility of intravenous cholangiography, as well as its effect on patient management, at an institution where CT was highly developed. In no case after normal findings on CT and/or ultrasound examination did IVC make a positive pathologic diagnosis. After abnormal results on CT and/or US examinations, in no case did IVC add to the diagnosis. Finally, after technically suboptimal results of CT and/or US examinations, IVC made only 1 positive pathologic diagnosis. Overall, IVC correctly demonstrated only 5 of 9 cases of common duct stones or strictures. Of the 26 cases with anatomical correlation there were a total of 7 false-positive and -negative IVC examinations. In this series, IVC was rarely useful in the diagnosis of biliary tract disease. Given the high inaccuracy rate of IVC in this study, its use for the exclusion of biliary tract disease is discouraged.

    Notes: Abstract The agent used to introduce gas into the stomach is an important factor in determining the quality of double-contrast upper gastrointestinal radiography. The efficacy of 3 effervescent agents formulated for use in double-contrast upper gastrointestinal radiography was evaluated in 300 patients. Patients found 2 granular preparations (E-Z-Gas granules and Baros) easier to swallow than a powdered agent (E-Z-Gas powder). Bubble formation and flocculation of barium in the stomach were less of a problem with Baros. Differences in mucosal coating and visualization of areae gastricae were not statistically significant.

    Notes: Abstract . This paper is concerned with the initial‐boundary‐value problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws. We study the boundary layers that may arise in approximations of entropy discontinuous solutions. We consider both the vanishing‐viscosity method and finite‐difference schemes (Lax‐Friedrichs‐type schemes and the Godunov scheme). We demonstrate that different regularization methods generate different boundary layers. Hence, the boundary condition can be formulated only if an approximation scheme is selected first. Assuming solely uniform $L^\infty$ bounds on the approximate solutions and so dealing with $L^\infty$ solutions, we derive several entropy inequalities satisfied by the boundary layer in each case under consideration. A Young measure is introduced to describe the boundary trace. When a uniform bound on the total variation is available, the boundary Young measure reduces to a Dirac mass. From the above analysis, we deduce several formulations for the boundary condition which apply whether the boundary is characteristic or not. Each formulation is based on a set of admissible boundary values, following the terminology of Dubois & LeFloch[15]. The local structure of these sets and the well‐posedness of the corresponding initial‐boundary‐value problem are investigated. The results are illustrated with convex and nonconvex conservation laws and examples from continuum mechanics.

    Notes: Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and dimethylaminomethacrylate (DMAEM) are useful for binding of enzymes. Copolymerization of MMA and DMAEM was carried out in dioxane using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator at 70°C. The estimation of the composition of MMA and DMAEM in copolymer was carried by 1H-NMR. The reactivity ratio was found to be r1 = 1.20 and r2 = 0.19 by Kelen-Tüdös method and r1 = 1.24 and r2 = 0.21 by Finemann-Ross method.

    Notes: Kinetics of grafting of poly(butyl acrylate) onto gelatin was studied with H2O2 - ascorbic acid redox systm. Percent grafting, grafting efficiency, Rg, and Rh were determined as a function of time, temperature, initiator, monomer, and backbone concentration. It was found that Rg depends on first power of monomer concentration and 0.5 power to the initiator concentrations. A detailed kinetic scheme is proposed to explain these results.

    Notes: Studies were carried out on grafting of various vinyl monomers to nitrocellulose by ceric ions. It was observed that graft copolymerization occurred only with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate monomer. The variables such as initiator concentration, monomer concentration, time of grafting, and nitrocellulose content on grafting of MMA are discussed. By hydrolyzing away the nitrocellulose backbone, the grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) branches were isolated and the 〉c=o peak at 1740 cm-1 in the infrared spectra of these isolated branches gave definite evidence of grafting. The molecular weight of isolated branches has been determined by viscometry. The probable mechanism of grafting may be at the α-carbon atom of primary alcohol or at a C2-C3 glycol group of the anhydro glucose unit or at the hemiacetal group of the end unit of nitrocellulose, as nitrocellulose is formed by the partial nitration of cotton cellulose.
