    Notes: Zusammenfassung Einen einfachen und betriebssicheren Abreißbogen erhält man, wenn man der Bogengleichspannung eine Wechselspannung derart überlagert, daß der Minimalwert der resultierenden Spannung unter der Brennspannung des Bogens liegt. Es gelingt mit dieser Anordnung, bei Aluminium-Elektroden mit einer 50periodigen Wechselspannung Brenndauern von etwa 0,004 bis 0,015 s zu erzielen. Die sehr lichtstarke Entladung kann bis zu 45 min bei Aluminium aufrechterhalten werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine auf dem Relaxationsverfahren basierende Methode zur zweidimensionalen Analyse von Wärmeübergangsversuchen mit einseitig beheizten oder nicht vertikal durchströmten Verdampferrohren vorgestellt. Damit können die notwendigen Daten zur Bestimmung des Post-CHF-Wärmeübergangs teilweise benetzter Heizflächen zur Verfügung gestellt werden. An Hand von zwei Beispielen - einem horizontal durchströmten und einem einseitig beheizten Verdampferrohr - wird die Anwendung des Verfahrens gezeigt. Die Ergebnisse der einund zweidimensionalen Analyse werden verglichen.
    Notes: Abstract A method based on a relaxation procedure is presented which enables the two-dimensional analysis of heat transfer experiments carried out with non-uniformly heated or non-vertically installed evaporator tubes. With this method all data necessary for the determination of post-CHF-heat transfer from partly wetted heating surfaces to the flow can be provided. With two examples - describing the effects in a horizontal and in an oneside heated evaporator tube - the application of the method is demonstrated. The results of the two-dimensional analysis are compared with those obtained by an one-dimensional evaluation of the tests.

    Notes: Abstract The multi-channel system of the segmental muscle stretch reflex arc is modelled as an arrangement of two or three parallel “component” loops coupled to each other at spinal and at muscle level. Such a model is thought to be more realistic than the usually adopted representation of the stretch reflex as a single negative feedback loop. Anatomical and physiological data were taken from the literature for an extensive simulation of the compound system with special reference to the problem of its stability. Particular emphasis was put on the question of which kind of central (spinal) connectivity is appropriate to best reduce the risk for instability which arises easily in certain system configurations. This paper describes the system and presents simple introductory computations apt to demonstrate the problems the physiological system has to cope with.

    Notes: Abstract A previously presented multi-loop model of the mammalian spinal α-motoneurone-Renshaw cell system was extended to incorporate different physiological input patterns: Ia fibres from primary muscle spindle endings, spinal input systems descending in the ventral quadrant and from the nucleus ruber. The main goal of the computer simulation calculations was to present a number of dynamic input-output relations between these inputs which are distributed inhomogenously to different types of α-MNs (that is, S-, FR-, and FF-type MNs) and the outputs of pools of the latter, for the purpose of experimental testing. The main outcome was that the phase relations of the outputs of the different types of MNs depend very much on the overall strength of recurrent inhibition, such that small changes of this strength, which appears to be small anyway, can significantly alter these phase relations. Since this strength is alterable through descending and segmental afferent inputs, this provides a physiological means of phase-decorrelation although it is unlikely to put the discharges of different MN types totally out of phase (by about 180°). Also, the inhomogeneity of recurrent inhibition would help to prevent a strong phase separation of this kind. Yet a decorrelation at the microscopic level could help suppress physiological tremor.

    Notes: Abstract This paper outlines an extension of Krausz' (1975) approach to nonlinear analysis of physiological systems with random impulse train inputs. This extension concerns multiple (here two) inputs and spike train outputs in addition to analogue outputs. The respective theoretical formula are given, and the approach is illustrated by experimental data relating to the nonlinear interaction of cat motor units activated with random pulse trains. As outputs are considered muscle tension (as an example for an analogue signal) and discharge frequency of a Ia fibre (as an example for a spike output).

    Notes: Abstract This paper continues the investigation of a three-loop representation of the segmental muscle stretch reflex system introduced in a preceding communication. Frequency response characteristics were computed for open-loop conditions, control and disturbance signal inputs under a variety of conditions: (i) “in parallel” and “in series” peripheral arrangements of muscle compartments, (ii) various patterns of central connectivity, (iii) various recruitment levels of motor units, (iv) various overall reflex gains, (v) absence or presence of muscle spindle accleration sensitivity. These computations disclosed a number of mechanisms by which the nervous system might improve system stability and behaviour. These mechanisms are discussed with regard to physiological data.

    Notes: Abstract The spinal α-motoneurone-Renshaw cell system was simulated by a meshed system of three principal negative feedback loops interconnected via “cross”-feedback pathways. Three types of α-motoneurone (MN): S-type, FR-type, and FF-type MNs, and their differing connections to and from Renshaw cells (RCs) were taken into account. The dynamic behaviour of RCs was taken from data provided by Cleveland and Ross (1977) and assumed to be given by a transfer function with one zero and two poles whose time constants τi depended on the overall amount of excitatory input to RCs. Also, the static gain of recurrent inhibition was taken to decrease with increasing excitatory input from α-MN axon collaterals (Cleveland et al., 1981) and to be depressed by spinally descending motor command signals. S-type MNs as well as F-type MNs were assumed to have high-pass characteristics though with slightly different cut-off frequencies. The closed-loop frequency responses of each sub-pool of MNs, S, FR, and FF, at three different levels of recruitment of these sub-pools, were calculated and shown to change significantly with recruitment level. These changes were essentially due to two reasons: firstly, to the general reduction of static gains within the recurrent inhibitory pathways with increasing motor output (recruitment), and secondly, to the increasing complexity of the whole network by recruitment of each new MN type. The particularly strong effect of the latter factor could easily be demonstrated by a comparison of the frequency responses of the MN types when these were, firstly, integrated into the network at their particular level of recruitment, and when they were, secondly, hypothetically assumed “isolated” from the remaining network, i.e., when subjected only to “self-inhibition”, the cross-inhibitory links to other MN types being cut. These results illustrate that the dynamic behaviour of α-MNs submitted to an inhomogeneously distributed recurrent and variable inhibition are not invariant, but depend upon the variable characteristics of a complex MN-RC network. This suggests that an important physiological function of recurrent inhibition via Renshaw cells, particularly of its inhomogeneous distribution, may be to adjust the dynamic MN sensitivity to the particular requirements prevailing at different motor output levels.
