Notes: At the Grenoble and Munich high-flux reactors fission fragment accelerators are under design which will deliver beams of very neutron-rich fission products with a final energy between 3 and 6 MeV/u. In order to obtain an efficient acceleration in a compact accelerator, charge conversion of the 1+ ion beams from the in-pile ion source to a q/A≥0.16 has to take place. In the chain from production to acceleration, ion sources are the key elements to reach high beam intensities of over 1010 s−1. For the in-pile part the target-ion source assembly has not only to be very efficient, but should also be highly selective for the desired elements (which go from nickel to europium) on one hand and robust against the hostile environment (high neutron and gamma flux) on the other hand. Foreseen types are a surface ionization source, which could also be run as laser ion source for resonant photo ionization, and, for rare gases, a plasma ion source coupled via a transfer line to the target. For the charge state breeding several different schemes are considered: the combination of a Penning trap for bunching, cooling, and mass separation and an electron beam ion source (EBIS) as charge breeder, similar to REX-ISOLDE, an EBIS with direct injection of a dc beam of 1+ ions ("accu-EBIS") or an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) with either continuous or bunched extraction. The EBIS may provide higher charge states, whereas the ECRIS is able to work with much higher beam intensities and allows cw-operation. The advantage of each scheme is explained and some design requirements of the different sources are presented. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Zr65Cu17.5Ni10Al7.5 as well as Zr69.5Cu12Ni11Al7.5 belong to the best glass forming alloys known. Glass transition temperatures of melt-spun ribbons are 372 and 360 °C, respectively. TEM and x-ray analysis of samples annealed above the glass transition temperature exhibit the formation of quasicrystalline microstructures with small amounts of crystalline phases. The metastable icosahedral phase is primitive with a quasilattice constant a=0.253 nm; its composition as determined by EDX is close to Zr69.5Cu12Ni11Al7.5. In both glasses, growth of the quasicrystals has been observed to be time-dependent (r∝t1/2), thus indicating a diffusion controlled transformation.

Notes: Abstract HVOF MCrAlY (M=Ni, Co) coatings were isothermally oxidized in synthetic airbetween 850 and 1050°C for times up to 167 hr. During thermal spraying, aluminum and yttrium oxidized to form a fine oxide dispersion. The HVOFMCrAlY coatings exhibited a microstructure similar to ODS alloys. The finedispersion consisted of Al2O3 and aluminum–yttriumoxides. The oxidation experiments showed that the oxidation rate of HVOFcoatings was two times slower than the oxidation rate of VPS MCrAlYcoatings. The oxidation mechanism changed mainly in the transient-stage(no metastable modification of Al2O3 formed) and it wasassumed that the oxide dispersion hindered diffusion of various elementsfrom the bulk material during oxidation. The formation of the fine oxidedispersion also influenced the adherence of the oxide scale. Themicrostructures of the transient oxide scales were examined by X-raydiffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM).

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of a quasicrystal with the nominal compositionAl63Cu25Fe12 was studied around 800°Cin environmental and synthetic air by means of thermogravimetric analysis, electron microscopy, and analytical electron spectroscopy. In an earlyoxidation stage, γ-Al2O3 formed with an orientational relationship tothe quasicrystal. At the oxide–metal interface, γ-Al2O3transformed into large hexagonal shaped α-Al2O3grains. The change in surface morphology indicated that at theoxide–gas interface γ-Al2O3 continued togrow as Θ-Al2O3. Locally the metastable aluminalayer was transformed thoroughly into α-Al2O3,which then continued to grow with a nodular morphology. On top of the oxidenodules, several at.% of Cu2+ were detected.
