    Notes: Abstract In order to test the possibility of utilizing high pressure in bioscience and biotechnology, a simple method for high-pressure generation and its use for microbial inactivation have been studied. When a pressure vessel was filled with water, sealed tightly and cooled to sub-zero temperatures, high pressure was generated in the vessel. The pressure generation was 60 MPa at −5 °C, 103 MPa at −10 °C, and 140 MPa at −15 °C, −20 °C, and −22 °C. The high pressure generated inactivated microorganisms effectively: yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii), bacteria (Lactobacillus brevis and Eschericia coli), and fungi (Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae) were completely inactivated when stored in sealed vessels −20 °C for 24 h. However, Staphylococcus aureus was only partly inactivated under the same conditions. This method opens up a new application of high pressure for storing, transporting, and sterilizing of foods and biological materials.

    Notes: Summary Retrograde tracing experiments using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) have been utilized for demonstrating the origin of efferent projections of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNv) in the cat. HRP-positive cells identifiable as origins of thalamic projections were found in LGNv after injections of HRP into the lateral central intralaminar nucleus. The labeled cells appeared concentrated in the medial part of the internal division of LGNv, consisting of medium-sized multipolar cells. Contralaterally, fewer labeled cells were present in the corresponding part of LGNv. In the case of injections of HRP into the midbrain (pretectum and superior colliculus), labeled cells in LGNv were distributed almost exclusively in its external division, composed of mainly small cells. Little overlap of the distribution of HRP-positive cells was seen in LGNv between the thalamic and midbrain injection cases.

    Notes: Summary Ascending projections from the nucleus of the brachium of the inferior colliculus (NBIC) in the cat were studied by the autoradiographic tracing method. Many fibers from the NBIC ascend ipsilaterally in the lateral tegmentum along the medial border of the brachium of the inferior colliculus. At midbrain levels, fibers from the NBIC end in the superior colliculus, the pretectum, the central gray and the peripeduncular tegmental region bilaterally with ipsilateral predominance. NBIC fibers to the superior colliculus are distributed densely to laminae VI an III throughout the whole rostrocaudal extent of the colliculus. In the pretectum, NBIC fibers terminate in the anterior and medial nuclei and the nucleus of the posterior commissure. NBIC fibers to the dorsal thalamus are distributed largely ipsilaterally. Many NBIC fibers end in the dorsal and medial divisions of the medial geniculate body, but few in the ventral division. The NBIC also sends fibers to the suprageniculate, limitans and lateralis posterior nuclei and the lateral portion of the posterior nuclear complex; these regions of termination of NBIC fibers constitute, as a whole, a single NBIC recipient sector. Additionally, the NBIC sends fibers to the centralis lateralis, medialis dorsalis, paraventricular and subparafascicular nuclei of the thalamus.

    Notes: Summary A modification of the previous methods of producing cerebral ischaemia in rats (Koizumiet al., Longaet al.), using an intraluminal thread technique, is described. The middle cerebral artery is occluded by introducing a simple 3−0 nylon thread (0.20–0.249 mm in diameter) through the internal carotid artery in the neck. It has been proven that with this method reproducible focal cerebral ischaemia can be achieved which resembles human stroke. Therefore this simple and relatively non-invasive model is suitable for the pathophysiological investigation of ischaemic stroke and the testing of potential therapies.

    Notes: Summary  This paper presents two patients with chronic progressive hearing disturbance. Each patient had an intrameatal tumour, part of which extended to the cerebellopontine (CP) angle. In both cases, the patients were initially diagnosed with an acoustic neurinoma. A 63-year-old male experienced a hearing disturbance in the left ear for 1.5 years prior to visiting our hospital. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a mass which was surgically resected. The tumour originated from the intrameatal dura mater. Histologically, the tumour was a meningioma. Similarly, a 53-year-old male presented with systemic lymphoma diagnosed 10 months earlier, and a hearing disturbance in the right ear that began 3 months prior to visiting our hospital. MR imaging prior to chemotherapy revealed a mass which extended to the CP angle. Part of the tumour in the CP angle disappeared after chemotherapy, suggesting a secondary lymphoma. Another tumour appeared later in Meckel's cave on the left side; however, it decreased in size following repeated chemotherapy. The present results indicate that differential diagnosis of intrameatal tumours and acoustic neurinomas may be difficult due to the small tumour size. Recent progress in neuroradiology may allow distinction of intrameatal tumours as a separate tumour classification. Our second patient is the sixth reported case of a CP angle lymphoma in the literature.

    Notes: Summary ¶ Cerebral blood flow and O2 metabolism during hypothermia (33–34°C) was evaluated in 5 patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage by positron emission tomography (PET). Their preoperative clinical condition was WFNS scale IV or V. The patients received surface cooling postoperatively, and were maintained in a hypothermic state during transfer for radiological examination. Positron emission tomography revealed a decrease in cerebral blood flow and O2 metabolic rate. Cerebral blood flow was 34.8±15.1 ml/100ml/min and the O2 metabolic rate was 1.85±0.61 ml/100ml/min in areas of the middle cerebral artery ipsilateral to the ruptured aneurysms, whereas these values were 30.8±7.1 and 2.21±0.45 ml/100ml/min, respectively, on the contralateral side. This represents a decrease of 37±27% compared to normal cerebral blood flow and 52±16% compared to normal O2 metabolic rate (p〈0.02) in the ipsilateral areas, and decreases of 44±13% and 43±12%, respectively, on the contralateral side. The present results reflected the luxury perfusion state in almost all cases and provide the first PET evidence of decreased cerebral blood flow and metabolic rate of O2 during hypothermia in humans.

    Notes: Summary Clinical characteristics and the outcomes of 50 patients with confirmed subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) of unknown aetiology were evaluated. Twenty-nine of these patients were interviewed with a mean follow-up of 7.7 years. Seven patients experienced early rebleeding during hospitalization, and one patient experienced late rebleeding during the follow-up period. On admission to the hospital the consciousness level was “clear” in 43 of the patients, “drowsy” in 6, and “semicomatose” in only 1. Of 10 patients who underwent computerized tomography (CT) within 3 days after SAH, 6 showed no abnormal CT findings and 3 had mild subarachnoid blood. Another patient showed severe SAH. Neurological deficit due to symptomatic vasospasm persisted in only 1 case. Two patients died after re-bleeding during hospitalization, and two others died during the follow-up, thereby representing an overall mortality rate of 8%. Of the latter cases, one died of an unrelated disease, and the other died suddenly from an unknown cause. The remaining forty-six patients (92%) had a good outcome. These results confirm previously reported clinical characteristics, namely that the symptoms of the majority of such cases are mild, the incidence of symptomatic vasospasm is rare, the risk of late re-bleeding is very low (less than 1% per year), and the prognosis is good. The CT findings suggest that some of these features resulted from only mild SAH. Thus, SAH of unknown aetiology seems to be a disease entity with a good prognosis.
