Notes: Abstract A speckle photographic method, which is sensitive to changes of gradients in fluid density, is applied for analyzing a compressible turbulent air flow with density fluctuations. Spatial correlation coefficients, turbulent length scales, and energy spectra are determined under the assumption of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The experiments are performed in a shock tube where the flow is passed through a turbulence grid. Measurements are taken before and after the turbulent regime interacts with the normal shock wave reflected from the tube's end wall. Amplification of the turbulence intensity by the shock interaction process is verified quantitatively and is shown to be restricted to the lower wave numbers in the spectrum.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 100 nichtsensibilisierten Schwangeren wurden unmittelbar ante partum im peripheren Blut 24,2±13,8%. Reticulocyten gefunden.
Notes: Summary Reticulocytes in the peripheral blood of 100 pregnant women without incompatibility of blood groups between mother and fetus amounted immediately before birth to 24,2±13,8%.. There was no difference between primipara and multipara. Reticulocytes were increased in 40 pregnant women with antibodies against D or A respectively B. The increase of reticulocytes was found in women with normal infants (35,9±17,5%.) as well as in those who gave birth to infants with hemolytic diseae of the newborn (44,8±20,6%.). The difference between both groups was statistical insignificant. The reticulocytes in pregnant women have no prognostic value with regard to the hemolytic disease of the fetus.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In drei Leipziger Schwangerenberatungsstellen wurden 3422 Frauen im 4. und 7.
Notes: Summary 3422 women, all patients of three Leipzig ante-natal clinics, were tested by means of S.F.T. during the 4th and 7th month of pregnancy. The number of positive results (26.8%) in the first group (4th month of pregnancy) was lower than expected according to figures given in the literature for the average population. In 9.7% of all cases the reaction became positive after the 4th month of pregnancy; the titres, however, remained low (less than 1: 256). A group of 65 “danger” pregnancies was selected which included the following cases: 57 cases where the S.F.T. had become positive after the 4th month; three cases with a constantly “higher” positive titre; and five cases with a titre increase of 1–3 steps. The children from these pregnancies were checked by means of S.F.T. and C.F.T., general, neurological, radiological, and ophthalmological examination either at the age of 2–10 weeks (34) or at the age of 1 1/2–2 years (31). The same tests and examinations were repeated in the majority of children either after an interval of four weeks or at the age of 6–12 months. No certain signs for toxoplasmosis were found in any of them. One child, whose S.F.T. was still as high as 1:1000 at the age of 1 year could be considered as a case of congenital toxoplasmosis although all other tests gave completely normal results. The mother of this child was treated for toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, the child immediately after birth. Two children, who showed signs of retarded development during infancy and early childhood, and two children who suffered febrile convulsions or grand mal seizures did not show any sign of toxoplasmosis. It can be concluded from the results of our investigation that the risk for the fetus is low if the SFT becomes positive after the 4th month, provided the titres are low, and in cases where the titre rises by only 1–2 steps. A routine treatment of such cases seems therefore unnecessary.

Notes: Summary While the presence of a robust perivascular neural network accompanying cerebral and dural blood vessels that contain various neuropeptides is well documented, the functional significance of this innervation is unclear. Following experimentally induced subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in animal models, immunocytochemical studies have revealed that changes occur in the staining intensity of some of these neuropeptides. This study compared the immunostaining intensity of calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) in cerebral and dural perivascular nerve fibers after SAH in the rat. Subarachnoid haemorrhage was produced by injecting 0.3 ml of autologous blood into the cisterna magna of male Sprague Dawley rats. Sham operated animals received an equal volume of buffered lactated Ringer's solution (pH 7.4). Changes in the immunostaining intensity of cerebral and dural vessels were evaluated by independent observers at 6, 24, and 48 hours after SAH. Immunostaining of CGRP was reduced in cerebral vessels at 6 hours and returned to normal by 48 hours. In contrast, CGRP immunostaining of dural perivascular nerve fibers was unchanged at all time periods examined. A marked decrease in SP immunostaining was documented at 6 hours in both the cerebral and dural vessels in all animals; at 48 hours, the staining intensity had returned to control levels. These results support the idea that several subpopulations of trigeminovascular neurons containing CGRP, SP, or both project to cerebral and dural vessels. Since these subpopulations may be differentially activated in pathologic conditions, such as SAH or vascular headache, the potential exists for pharmacologic intervention of specific neuropeptides with the resultant abatement of a pathologic process.

Notes: New challenges for design, manufacturing and packaging of MEMS/NEMS arise fromthe ongoing miniaturization process. Therefore there is a demand on detailed information onthermo-mechanical material properties of the applied materials. Because of size effects and thestrong dependency of the thermo-mechanical behavior of active and passive components on processparameters often unsolved questions of residual stresses lead to system failure due to crackformation. With the fibDAC (Focused Ion Beam based Deformation Analysis by Correlation)method which is presented in this paper the classical hole drilling method for stress releasemeasurement has been downscaled to the nanoscale. The ion beam of the FIB station is used as amilling tool which causes the stress release at silicon microstructures of MEMS devices. Theanalysis of the stress release is achieved by digital image correlation (DIC) applied to load stateSEM images captured in a cross beam equipment (combination of SEM and FIB). The results of theDIC analysis are deformation fields which are transferred to stress solution by application of finiteelement analysis. In another step the resolution of the method has been improved by the applicationof trench milling instead of hole milling. Thereby deformation measurements in the nm range areestablished. The method is also a powerful tool for the analysis of sub-grain stresses of engineeringmaterials

Notes: Summary Appendectomy is a very frequent cause of incisional hernia. In this paper the rate of recurrence after the hernia repair by simple suture and mesh repair was studied. 17 lateral incisional hernias secondary to appendectomy were repaired over a 9 year period. Prosthetic repair was carried out in 9 cases and primary closure in the remaining 8 cases. All the patients were followed over a period that ranged from 1 to 8 years (mean 5.6 years). There was one recurrence, though 2 patients (11.7%) with mesh repair complained about abdominal pain during the first postoperative year. The study concludes that both techniques can be successfully implemented if the correct indications based on the extent of the defect and the clinical characteristics of the patient are respected.
