    Notes: The therapeutic benefits of dopamine (DA) agonists after traumatic brain injury (TBI) imply a role for DA systems in mediating functional deficits post-TBI. We investigated how experimental TBI affects striatal dopamine systems using fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), western blot, and d-amphetamine-induced rotational behavior. Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were injured by a controlled cortical impact (CCI) delivered unilaterally to the parietal cortex, or were naïve controls. Amphetamine-induced rotational behavior was assessed 10 days post-CCI. Fourteen days post-CCI, animals were anesthetized and underwent FSCV with bilateral striatal carbon fiber microelectrode placement and stimulating electrode placement in the medial forebrain bundle (MFB). Evoked DA overflow was assessed in the striatum as the MFB was electrically stimulated at 60 Hz for 10 s. In 23% of injured animals, but no naïve animals, rotation was observed with amphetamine administration. Compared with naïves, striatal evoked DA overflow was lower for injured animals in the striatum ipsilateral to injury (p 〈 0.05). Injured animals exhibited a decrease in Vmax (52% of naïve, p 〈 0.05) for DA clearance in the hemisphere ipsilateral to injury compared with naïves. Dopamine transporter (DAT) expression was proportionally decreased in the striatum ipsilateral to injury compared with naïve animals (60% of naïve, p 〈 0.05), despite no injury-related changes in vesicular monoamine transporter or D2 receptor expression (DRD2) in this region. Collectively, these data appear to confirm that the clinical efficacy of dopamine agonists in the treatment of TBI may be related to disruptions in the activity of subcortical dopamine systems.

    Notes: The effects of alloying C with Ge and Si and varying the C/Ge ratio during the growth of very thin layers of the ternary alloy SiGeC grown on Si (100) substrates and the resulting strain modification on self-assembled and self-organized quantum dots are examined. During coherent islanded growth, where dislocations are not formed yet to relieve the strain, higher strain energy produced by greater lattice mismatch acts to reduce the island size, increase the density of islands, and significantly narrow the distribution of island sizes to nearly uniformly sized quantum dots. Strain energy can also control the critical thickness for dislocation generation within the three-dimensional islands, which then limits the maximum height which coherent islands can achieve. After the islands relax by misfit dislocations, the island sizes increase and the island size distribution becomes broader with the increase of misfit and strain. The optimal growth for a high density of uniform coherent islands occurred for the Si0.49Ge0.48C0.03 alloy composition grown on (100) Si, at a growth temperature of 600 °C, with an average thickness of 5 nm, resulting in a narrow size distribution (about 42 nm diameter) and high density (about 2×1010 dots/cm2) of quantum dots. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract S fimbrial adhesins I and II (SfaI and II), produced by extraintestinal Escherichia coli pathogens that cause urinary tract infections (UTI) and newborn meningitis (NBM), respectively, mediate bacterial adherence to sialic acid-containing glycoprotein receptors present on host epithelial cells and extracellular matrix. The S fimbrial adhesin complexes consist of four proteins: SfaI-A, the major subunit protein and the minor subunit proteins SfaI-G, SfaI-S and SfaI-H. Sialic acid-specific binding is mediated by the minor subunit protein SfaI-S. In order to determine whether the minor subunit proteins SfaI-G, -S and -H play a role in the modulation of adherence and the degree of fimbriation, a trans-complementation system was developed. A non-adhesive E. coli K-12 derivative, harbouring the sfaI-A gene but lacking sfaI-G, -S and -H, was transformed with sfaI-G, -S or -H. Only SfaI-S was able to increase the degree of fimbriation and to confer adhesion properties on the recombinant E. coli K-12 strains. Amino acid residues in SfaI-S that are involved in modulation of fimbriation as well as in receptor recognition were localized by random and site-directed mutagenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Four cases of phrenic nerve paralysis complicating chest tube placement in the newborn for pneumothorax are presented. This complication is related to abnormal location of the medial end of the chest tube. It is suggested that on the frontal chest radiograph, the medial end of the chest tube should be no less than 1 cm from the spine.

    Notes: Abstract The measurement of strain on a structural member in the presence of high-pressure water environment requires waterproofing of the gages as well as understanding of the pressure effect on the foil gages. Two new waterproofing methods are developed to protect the gage under these extremely high pressures. This study has resulted in a new compensating method which eliminates the effects of temperature and pressure simultaneously. The waterproofing materials studied during this investigation are superior to other earlier techniques reported in literature since they provide protection up to 11,500 psi (80 MPa) while previously existing techniques failed before this pressure. Also, these studies on the pressure effect deal with the realistic situation of coated strain gages in a water environment, as compared to previous studies which dealt with uncoated strain gages in an oil environment.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is an extension of an earlier study2 of a pressurized water environment of up to 80 MPa. The effectiveness of four water-proofing materials is studied for pressures up to 172.5 MPa (or 25,000 psi). The pressure effect on the coated gages is also investigated. The results indicate that the pressure effect on coated gages is smaller than on uncoated gages. Two pressure-compensation techniques are evaluated. The newly developed self-compensation method, which simultaneously compensates for temperature and pressure effects, is found most effective.
