Notes: This paper presents experimental and numerical simulation for deformation and fatigue lifeprediction of various cables, such as electrical, optical and network cables. The cable damage isproduced by the tensile, bending and torsional action under moving and fixing condition, and bydirect external impact. To obtain material responses of the cable, uniaxial tensile tests anddrop-weight impact tests were adopted, and the nonlinear constitutive equations based on variousstrain energy potentials or material models were employed to analyze deformation of polymer sheathand metallic armor layer of the cable. Finite element results were compared with experimental datafor deformation and impact absorption energy of the cable during direct external impact. Also, fatiguestrength of the cable was predicted from variation of calculated stress level under tensile conditions.Fractured surface of the cable were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

Notes: Carcinoid tumors derived from neuroendocrine cells can release serotonin and other vasoactive substances into the systemic circulation, resulting in carcinoid syndrome. Testicular carcinoid, a rare disease accounting for less than 1% of all testicular neoplasms, rarely manifests symptoms of carcinoid syndrome. We describe a case of carcinoid syndrome arising from a primary testicular carcinoid tumor. A 21-year-old male patient presented with facial flushing and diarrhea for 5 years. He had an enlarged left testis and a 1-cm, ill-defined, hard, non-tender mass in his right testis. His 24 h urinary excretion of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid was elevated (16.1 mg/day). Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy correlated with carcinoid tumor in both testes. Following bilateral orchiectomy, the patient's facial flushing and diarrhea disappeared.

Notes: A new method is demonstrated for the quantification of Ti—O—Si and Ti—O—Ti bonds in Ti–Si binary oxides. It is based on the linear combination of two reference X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Ti K edge. The proper selection of a Ti—O—Si reference material is most important for the successful application of this method. Three Ti–Si binary oxide systems have been analysed by the new method: Ti–Si mixed oxides, titania supported on silica and Ti-substituted MCM-41 (crystalline mesoporous molecular sieve material invented by Mobil) with various Ti contents.

Notes: Abstract To predict the clinical usefulness of DA-125, a newly developed doxorubicin analog, we compared its antitumor activity against 20 different human cancer cell lines with that of doxorubicin using the MTT in vitro chemosensitivity test. We also measured and compared the cellular uptake of this drug and doxorubicin in two cancer cell lines and their doxorubicin-resistant sublines. In the MTT test, DA-125 showed lower IC50 values than doxorubicin for 14 of 20 cell lines. DA-125 was more potent than doxorubicin for hepatocellular cancer cells with high mdr 1 expression. Among cancer cells from the stomach and colon, DA-125 was more potent than doxorubicin in 12 of 14 cell lines. We also investigated the cross-resistance of this drug with doxorubicin using four doxorubicin-resistant cancer cell sublines. Except in one cell line, there was very low cross-resistance. Cellular drug-uptake experiments were performed for two gastric cancer cell lines and their doxorubicin-resistant sublines. In this experiment, DA-125 was found to be very rapidly and completely converted to its active metabolite, M1, in the culture media. After this conversion, M1 was incorporated into these cancer cells more rapidly and reached higher intracellular concentrations than doxorubicin, suggesting that DA-125 (as M1) could achieve earlier and higher levels of intracellular accumulation than doxorubicin in its target tissues from the bloodstream. As a possible alternative antineoplastic agent to doxorubicin, DA-125 awaits further evaluation for its antitumor activity and toxicity.

Notes: Abstract With its rapid industrial transformation over the last two decades, Korea has experienced a massive population shift from rural to urban areas. In particular, population concentration together with the concentration of economic and political power in the primate city of Seoul created spatial imbalances and a host of urban problems which are not uncommon to many developing nations. In response to these persisting imbalances and problems, the government of Korea has implemented various programs and measures since 1970. Korea's experiment with population redistribution, although it may not be easily replicated in other countries, provides a rare example with which we can examine some of the major issues involved in population distribution policies. The paper reviews Korean policies and programs for population redistribution, assesses their effects in redressing the three major spatial imbalances - between urban and rural, between regions, and between cities of different sizes - and draws lessons for policy formation in Korea as well as in other countries which are considering such a policy.

Notes: Abstract The possible association of human foamy virus (HFV) with human thyroid disorders such as Graves' disease (GD) has been a topic of controversy due to the inconsistent results reported by several groups of investigators. Here we report the investigation of the presence of HFV-related sequences in the Korean population. DNA was obtained from peripheral blood lymphocytes from 24 GD patients and 23 healthy blood donors and subjected to PCR amplification using three sets of nested primers derived fromgag, env, and LTR regions of the HFV genome. Contrary to previously reported studies, our analysis identified HFV-related sequences in the genomes of both healthy individuals and the GD patients. However, the nature of the HFV genome present in each group appeared to be different. We detected all 3 regions of HFV-related sequences in 29% of the HFV-positive GD patients, while no samples in the control group amplified all three regions. This suggests that the LTR may be used as a tool for screening for HFV in GD patients. Our data favor the hypothesis of a relationship between GD and the presence of HFV-related sequences, though in a complex way.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines urban unemployment patterns in Korea using a simultaneous model of unemployment and labor force participation. Urban demographic characteristics and economic conditions are put forward to explain inter-urban variations in the rates of unemployment and labor force participation. The estimation results indicate the importance of local demographic characteristics and economic conditions in determining labor force participation rates and unemployment rates. The results clearly indicate that “sexual dualism” is pervasive in the urban labor market in Korea. Market discrimination against women is quite evident. The effect of city size seems to be insignificant except that large cities tend to provide a more favorable environment for women to participate in the labor force.

Notes: Abstract The two-step synthesis of diphenyl carbonate (DPC) from dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and phenol has been compared in liquid phase and gas phase, both over heterogeneous catalysts. In the first step, equilibrium yields of methyl phenyl carbonate (MPC) in the transesterification of DMC and phenol were very low at low temperatures in the liquid phase although reaction rates were fast. This endothermic reaction was more favorable at high temperatures in the gas-phase reaction. Titanium oxide catalysts supported on SiO2 or activated carbon were found to be effective in a continuous gas flow reactor. In case of the second step, the disproportionation of MPC, selective formation of DPC was not feasible in the gas-phase reaction due to extensive side reactions. However, there was no by-product in the liquid-phase reaction over the TiO2/SiO2 catalyst. Therefore, our proposed two-step synthesis process consists of the gas-phase transesterification of DMC and phenol followed by the liquid-phase disproportionation of MPC to DPC, both over the TiO2/SiO2 catalyst.
