Notes: Abstract. Our previous study revealed that anaphylac tic shock can be produced in WBB6F1-W/Wv (abbreviated as W/Wv) mice. Because they are congenitally deficient in mast cells, we are certain that some other cell types are involved as mediator sources. In the present study, with the aim of examining the role of circulatory granulocytes, the effect of monoclonal an tibody to a mouse granulocyte antigen, Gr-1, upon active and passive anaphylactic shock was tested in W/Wv mice using several mast cell-bearing strains as references. An intravenous injection of 40 μg of anti-granulocyte antibody one day before the antigen chal lenge produced a marked decrease in neutrophils and nearly complete abolition of lethal shock in W/Wv mice regardless of the sensitizing method. Both pre vention of shock and reduction of neutrophils lasted for three days after the treatment with the antibody but not for six days. From these results, a reasonable conclusion would be that circulating Gr-1+ cells (predominantly composed of neutrophils) are the major mediator source. Reference experiments using mast cell-bearing strains revealed that the suppressive effect of anti-granulocyte antibody was also observed against active anaphylactic shock in C3H/HeN mice but not against active and passive anaphylactic shock in the other mice.

Notes: Summary Ultrastructural studies on the skin of two patients affected by infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) were performed to evaluate its diagnostic value and to discuss the etiology of INAD. While the majority of terminal axons around intradermal glands were dystophic consisting of tubulomembranous and tubulovesicular profiles sometimes accompanied by synaptic vesicles, there were only few dystophic axons inside intradermal nerve bundles. These observations suggest that the primary lesion of INAD is located in terminal and presynaptic axons. Therefore, terminal axons have to be investigated when a diagnostic skin biopsy is performed in INAD.

Notes: Summary 5-Fluorouracil (FU) and its masked compounds tegafur (FT) and carmofur (HCFU) were administered orally to Beagle dogs daily for 6 months, and their chronic neurotoxic effects were examined morphologically. In ten dogs that survived the 6-month treatment large vacuoles produced by splitting of the intraperiod line of myelin were observed in the fornix in the wall of the third ventricle. In severely affected dogs large vacuoles developed in the medial preoptic area, medial portion of the internal capsule, the area around the subthalamic nucleus and the mammillo-thalamic tract. Axons of myelinated fibers affected by vacuolation were generally well maintained, and destruction of myelin was not detected. Though proliferation of glia cells or abnormality of oligodendroglia was not detected, a lipid deposit covered by a single layer membrane was observed in the cell bodies and processes of astrocytes. No abnormality was detected by electron microscopy in the cerebrum, inferior colliculus, cerebellum, or pons. Of eight dogs that died during the treatment period, large vacuoles were observed in the fornix in the wall of the third ventricle of four dogs treated for more than 1 month, and large vacuoles were present in the inferior colliculus in two dogs of the FT group in the above four dogs. In the HCFU group, the interruption of treatment for 6months resulted in alleviation or disappearance of the vacuolar lesions. The above findings suggest that the neurotoxicity of FU and its masked compounds FT and HCFU in long-term treatment produces changes morphologically identical with one another in respect to the site of their manifestation and nature of lesion, that their common degraded product α-fluoro-β-alanine (FBAL) plays a crucial role in their neurotoxic actions, and that vacuolar lesions, to which myelin was more vulnerable than neurons, can develop where the toxic substance readily deposits and accumulates.

Notes: Abstract  Continuous abundance estimates (510 m resolution) of the copepods Neocalanus cristatus, N. flemingeri and Metridia pacifica were obtained with an electronic particle counter along cruise tracks in the subarctic western North Pacific in spring. For all three species, the number of patches decreased exponentially with increasing patch size. Most patches (63 to 83%) were dominated by one species, and patches of the same species more closely spaced than patches of different species. The patches of M. pacifica tended to coexist with those of N. cristatus. In contrast, patches of N. flemingeri rarely co-occurred with those of other copepods. These patterns were more clearly observed in fine-scale observations with sampling intervals of 〈31 m. Coherence analysis of copepod species pairs showed no characteristic scale at 2 to 50 km wave lengths. At shorter wave lengths (〈2 km), frequent positive correlations were observed between N. cristatus and M. pacifica. Thus, the distribution of copepods appears to be a mosaic assemblage of patches of each copepod species. These results suggest that copepods have a mechanism to form species-specific aggregations, and the aggregation and segregation processes are maintained at a scale of 〈2 km.

Notes: Abstract In a series of studies to develop an effective high speed plankton sampler, hydrodynamic research was carried out on a modified model of the Clarke Jet Net. A theoretical analysis of the motion of the sampler was made using an IBM 7040 computer, and test tows were made in an experimental ship tank and at sea. To maintain the roll angle of the sampler at approximately zero, a v-shape bridle was applied. A pair of towing holes should be selected for the particular range of towing velocity. The calculated longitudinal stability seemed good in all the cases examined. Towing tests in the ship tank at 2 to 3 m/sec revealed sufficient stability. The motion of the sampler at speeds higher than 3 m/sec can be assumed from hydrodynamic coefficients derived from the ship tank experiment. Towing-cable characteristics, assumed by computation, indicated that about 500 m at 6 kt and 1,000 m at 12 kt should be paid out to lower the sampler down to 100 m. The effect of the sampler on the cable is found only adjacent to it and is almost negligible beyond 50 m from it in depth. Results of sea tests at 6 and 9 kt confirmed the stability of the sampler. Examination of the catch suggested that the present model can be used, with some modifications, for the quantitative and qualitative sampling of large zooplankton.

Notes: Abstract A model that helps explain the mysterious long-distance migration of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is presented, based on oceanographic observations, satellite buoy drift experiments, and samplings of eel larvae taken in 1991. The trajectory of a 150 m depth buoy relased in the spawning area strongly suggests that A. japonica larvae spawned just south of the salinity front are transported westward by the North Equatorial Current (NEC). The larvae are then thought to be entrained into the Mindanao Current flowing southward along the Philippine Islands where A. japonica juveniles are scarcely distributed. These controversial results lead to the assumption that eel larvae are transferred from the NEC to the northward flowing Kuroshio, which distributes the eel larvae to the growth habitats of eastern Asia. In this eel larvae transfer model, a northward Ekman transport caused by trade winds plays an important role in explaining the wind-induced northward shift of the larvae together with the onset of diel vertical migration. Assuming that leptocephali greater than 20 mm initiate the vertical migration, a westward wind velocity greater than 5 to 10 m s-1 should be high enough to diminish the southward current velocity. When the physical and geophysical conditions — such as the salinity front for spawning activity, the water tunnel for westward larval transport, the Ekman transport by the trade wind for transfer of the larvae from the NEC to the Kuroshio, and the strong velocity of the Kuroshio for rapid transport to growth habitats — are well matched with the timing of the onset of vertical migration, large-scale eel migration could result.

Notes: Abstract The paper reports a finite difference solution for the natural counterflow generated in a horizontal adiabatic duct with different end-temperatures. Ducts with circular and rectangular cross-section are considered. The natural counterflow is modeled as fully-developed. The numerical results demonstrate that the flow consists of a strong axial counterflow superimposed on four secondary eddies situated in the four quadrants of the cross-section. The paper documents the temperature variation around the wall of a pipe, in a moderate Rayleigh number range not documented previously. The use of the wall temperature information in thermal stress analysis is discussed. The numerical results are also used to assess the applicability of analytical predictions for the flow field in ducts with rectangular cross-section.

Die i.d. Injektion des Lokalanaestheticums möchten wir als eine Ursache der epidermalen Vacuolisierung auffassen.
Notes: Summary To elucidate the mechanism of vacuolation frequently encountered in the normal epidermal cells surrounding skin tumors, 0.5 and 1.0% procaine hydrochloride, and 1.0% lidocaine hydrochloride with and without epinephrine were injected either i.d. or s.c. into mature white male rabbits, and the sites of injection were biopsied either immediately or after 15 min. The epidermis of the site of intradermal injection showed a significant increase in the number of vacuolated cells in contrast to the site of s.c. injection (P〈0.001) irrespective of the kinds of local anesthetics and the time lapse from injection to biopsy. Electron microscopy revealed vacuole-formations without limiting membrane in the cytoplasm of the kerationocytes. It is suggested that the local edema in the upper dermis caused by injection of anesthetics gives rise to edema and vacuolation of overlying epidermal cells, and that i.d. injection of local anesthetics may be regarded as a cause of epidermal vacuolation.
