Notes: Abstract Aged individuals of mammalian species displaying hyperphosphorylated tau protein may be suitable natural models for investigating neurodegenerative alterations occurring, for example, in Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, autoptic tissue from the entorhinal, motor and prefrontal cortices of 14 mammalian species was screened using the monoclonal antibody AT8, which is directed against a phosphorylated epitope of human tau and applicable to the tissues of aged domestic animals, as shown in previous studies. AT8-immunoreactive neuronal processes and perikarya were revealed in Campbell’s guenon, rhesus monkey, baboon, rabbit, spectacled bear, guanaco, reindeer and bison. Signs for considerable neuropathological alterations in aged bisons also included neuropil threads, whereas AT8 immunoreactivity in the other species was only sparsely scattered. Hyperphosphorylated tau in the brain of an 28-year-old rhesus monkey was also detected by AT100, PHF-1 and TG-3 antibodies, but only in the hippocampal formation and entorhinal cortex, which are known as starting point for tangle spreading in the cortex of Alzheimer patients.

Notes: Summary Alcohol was administed in a vitaminsupplemented liquid diet (Stardit) to Wistar rats 4 weeks before mating and during pregnancy. Of the daily calories 38–40% were supplied by alcohol and by isocaloric sucrose in the controls. Offspring of alcohol drinking dams showed a reduced birth weight and gained weight less rapidly than the controls. On day 3, 4, 7, 12, 17 and 21, experimental animals and controls were perfused for histological and electron microscopic investigations. Morphometric analysis of the cerebella (Fol. 5 and Fol. 8) showed no difference in the number of Purkinje cells. However, on day 7 the Purkinje cell nuclei of experimental pups were significantly smaller. This difference disappeared at day 12. Electron microscopic investigations in the 4, 7, and 12 days old experimental animals revealed a delayed cytoplasmic maturation of Purkinje cells which mainly involved the rough endoplasmic reticulum. At 17 days, there was no difference between the two groups. These data are discussed in relation to alcohol-induced metabolic changes in the brain.

Notes: The crossing of two dust shells is considered as a simplified model for shell crossing during the spherically symmetric collapse of dust. It is shown that one encounters the same problems as in the latter case if one wants to continue the space-time dynamically through the region of intersection. To get a unique solution of the equations of motion, detailed information on the interaction between the shells has to be given. A corresponding Newtonian model is discussed and compared with the relativistic case. Furthermore it is shown that dust shells cannot be obtained as limiting cases of extended dust regions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are few studies on the development of oculomotor functions during childhood. B. Fischer, M. Biscaldi, and S. Gezeck (1997) reported improvement of antisaccade task performance between ages 6 and 16 years. The present study is a replication and extension of those results. In three age groups (6–7, 10–11, 18–26 years), saccades during pro- and antisaccade tasks with 200-ms gap and overlap and during a fixation task were measured. Adults exhibited faster saccades and less prosaccades during the antisaccade tasks than 10–11-year-old children; these two groups had faster saccades during all tasks and less prosaccades during the anti- and the fixation task than 6–7-year-old subjects. Both children groups made more express saccades than adults. Results suggest different degrees of age-related improvement for different saccadic parameters, the effects being greatest for prosaccade inhibition during the antisaccade task and in line with the assumed protracted development of prefrontal functions.

Notes: The topography of the postimperative negative variation (PINV) was analyzed in participants with high and low scores on the German version of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. Scalp amplitude and Laplacian maps of the terminal contingent negative variation (tCNV) and PINV and the time course of the PINV were compared between the two groups. CNV and PINV were induced with a delayed matching-to-sample task, in which the pattern of the imperative stimulus was either clearly or ambiguous matched to one of the two diamonds simultaneously presented as a warning stimulus 4.0 s earlier. Electroencephalograms were recorded with a DC amplifier (32 channels). Negativity increased from tCNV to PINV, especially at frontal sites, and the PINV was larger under ambiguous than under clear matching conditions. Low-scoring participants showed a right-sided predominance of the PINV, which was absent in high-scoring participants. These results resemble differences in the topography of the PINV between healthy control participants and those with schizophrenia under identical experimental conditions and suggest functional differences between tCNV and PINV.

Notes: To date, the investigation of the antisaccade task, a simple test of “executive functions,” in children with ADHD has yielded inconsistent results. The present study aimed at contributing to this issue by (a) the investigation of a large sample of carefully diagnosed ADHD patients aged 7–15 years, and (b) the analyses of differential age effects in patients and controls. Healthy control children were pairwise matched with patients (N=46; age=136±24 months) for age and gender, and did not significantly differ in IQ. Horizontal pro– and antisaccades were elicited under the 200–ms gap and overlap conditions (blocks of 100 trials each). Overall, patients exhibited (a) augmented pro– and antisaccadic reaction times, (b) augmented error rates (antitasks), (c) augmented proportions of early responses (all conditions), and (d) reduced proportions of express saccades under the prosaccadic gap condition. The greater decline in anti– as compared to pro–SRT with increasing age that characterized controls was missing in patients. Confirming Barkley's (1997) neuropsychological theory of ADHD, these results altogether point to alterations in “executive Functions” in ADHD patients that are presumably supported by frontal lobe structures, in particular the lateral prefrontal cortex and the frontal eye fields.
