Notes: Abstract Given a natural language cleartext and a ciphertext obtained by Huffman coding, the problem of guessing the code is shown to be NP-complete for various variants of the encoding process.

Notes: Abstract A recent study reported that exposure of student embalmers in Cincinnati to high concentrations of formaldehyde (2 mg/m3) reduced the activity of the DNA repair protein O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). Reduction in a DNA repair enzyme may strongly increase the cancer risk not only with respect to the repair-enzyme causing agent but with respect to all carcinogens causing lesions subject to repair by the enzyme in question. Thus, we examined whether formaldehyde exposure of 57 medical students during their anatomy course at two different Universities in Germany influenced MGMT activity in mononuclear blood cells. Mean formaldehyde exposure of 41 students was 0.2 ± 0.05 mg/m3 for 6 h per week. MGMT activity was 133.2 ± 14.9 fmol MGMT/106 cells before the beginning of the formaldehyde exposure, 131.1 ± 15.8 fmol MGMT/106 cells after 50 days (P = 0.56) and 128.2 ± 19.0 fmol MGMT/106 cells after 111 days of exposure (P=0.92). Similarly, no significant influence of formaldehyde exposure was observed, when smoking habits, alcohol consumption, allergic disease and sex of students were considered. In addition no significant difference was obtained in MGMT activity between 16 students with mean formaldehyde exposure of 0.8 ± 0.6 mg/m3 and students without formaldehyde exposure (n=51; P=0.37). In conclusion, exposure of the medical students in western Europe to formaldehyde did not decrease MGMT activity in mononuclear blood cells.

Notes: Abstract. Oligonucleotide duplexes of a defined sequence containing one 1,N 6-ethenoadenosine (EA) were synthesized and used as substrates to study the repair of this DNA lesion in cell homogenates of peripheral mononuclear blood cells of 39 male and female workers, exposed to vinyl chloride. These data were compared to data from 39 employees of the same company working in other production plants and to data from a control group of 39 persons, living in an area without vinyl chloride production. After incubation of the 5′- and 3′-labeled oligonucleotide duplex with cell homogenate, a specific nicking activity, releasing the deoxyribosyl phosphate originally carrying the EA, was found. This activity was used to determine the individual and collective repair activities for ethenoadenine. The exposed group showed a mean of 158.5±39.9 (SD) fmol product fragment and did not differ significantly from the mean value of the two control groups with 156.5±42.9 fmol and 161.2±53.6 fmol, respectively. Large interindividual variations were found, ranging from 4.9-fold in the exposed to 8.2- and 7.2-fold in the control groups. The development of an assay for ethenoadenine repair is significant for understanding the role of EA repair in eukaryotic cells.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we examine the use of a symmetric binary random stimulus for eliciting the ERG, and for calculating the first-order and second-order kernels of a nonlinear functional expansion of the response. We show that if the stimulus is represented in a non-dimensional form, then the units in which all kernels are measured are the same as the units used to measure the response, microvolts in the case of the ERG: further, contributions from all kernels to the response can be added without scale factors. We present the first-order and second-order kernels measured for a population of 15 normal subjects in a clinical setting. The measurements were made at various levels of adaptation ranging from photopic to scotopic conditions. The second-order kernels illustrate the processes of rapid adaptation (〈100 ms) in the retina.

Notes: The magnetic structure of Mn(Nb0.5Ta0.5)2O6 with columbite structure was determined by means of neutron diffraction using single-crystal data. The intensities were gained by means of a small cold Eulerian cradle. The evaluation leads to a canted magnetic structure GxAz (G: S1 = - S2 = S3 = - S4; A: S1 = - S2 = - S3 = S4). The magnetic moments form an angle of 35.4° with the a axis. The magnetic space group is Pb'cn. The canting angle depends on the Nb content.

Notes: By means of neutron diffraction the magnetic structure of FeTa2O6 has been determined. The observed magnetic reflexions define a unit cell 2a, b, 2c. In order to match the tetragonal symmetry this cell must be enlarged again, which results in the final magnetic cell 2a, 2b, 2c with the magnetic space group Ic41/a. The structure contains two sublattices with the cells 2a, b, 2c and a, 2b, 2c, the moments of which are perpendicular to each other. The moments lie in the a/b plane and form an angle of φ = 45° with the a axis. The spin quantum number is found to be S = 2.04.
