Notes: Abstract The effect of systemic 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP; 100 mg/kg daily) and subsequent long ultraviolet irradiation (UVA; 300 mJ/cm2; peak: 365 nm) on albino and pigmented rat eyes was studied in a 3-dimensional experimental set-up. While 8-MOP and UVA did not cause any ocular pathology when administered alone, a combined application of the two factors caused reversible corneal opacities, and irreversible iris devascularisation and cataracts. The irreversible changes were seen only in the albinos and accompanied by a significant decrease in lens wet weight. Phosphorescence and EPR spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of an 8-MOP-protein photoadduct in the animals treated with both 8-MOP and UVA. The results of this study emphasize the necessity of shielding the eyes of patients on photochemotherapy with protective spectacles.

Notes: Abstract Abstract The question of the emission of pseudoscalar bosons (axions) in nuclear deexcitation processes and their decay into two photons was studied with a rotatable multi detector system at the power reactor Biblis A. Assuming an axion mass of 250 keV and the standard model decay rate we obtain (1.0 ± 1.0) × 1O−10 for the ratio of the numbers of axions and Ml γ- ray transitions in the reactor core. This is ∼ 10−5 of the model prediction.

Notes: Summary The influence of daily subcutaneous cortisol injections (10 mg/kg) on the development of cataracts in streptozotocine (STR) diabetes was studied in 6 groups of Wistar rats (n=10). Cataracts occurred only in the two groups subjected to high STR doses (60 mg/kg). We were astonished to find that in cortisol-treated diabetic animals there were lower blood glucose levels, fewer cases of glucosuria, and less pronounced cataracts than in rats treated with STR only. As STR had been administered after the start of cortisol therapy, it is assumed that the steroid had caused a protection of pancreatic B cells against STR and the onset of a less severe diabetes.

Notes: Abstract For the investigation of vibrational states in odd A nuclei we have studied the level structure of239U by the238U (n thermal,γ) reaction. Various complementary measurement techniques as curved-crystal-, anti-Compton-,γ-γ coincidence- and conversion electron spectroscopy have been applied. The resulting data have been used to establish the deexcitation scheme of239U up to ∼1.3 MeV and to make spin assignments. Most of the levels are interpreted in terms of the Nilsson model. The data also indicate the presence of the Nilsson states ¦501↺¦ and ¦750¦. Three members of theΒ-vibrational band built on the ¦631↺¦ state and one member of theΒ-vibration built on the ¦622↑¦ ground state have been identified through transitions with strongE0 admixtures. The octupole vibrational state built on the ¦631↺¦ band is proposed at 815 keV.

Notes: Abstract The level structures of the doubly odd nuclei80Br and82Br have been studied by means of the thermal neutron capture reactions79Br(n, γ)80Br and81Br(n, γ)82Br. Captureγ-ray spectra from isotopically separated targets have been measured in the approximate energy intervals 30〈E γ(keV)〈1100 with three bent crystal spectrometers installed at the Grenoble high-flux reactor. Measurements with Ge(Li) detectors covered the energy range 0.1〈E(MeV)〈8. Gamma-gamma coincidences have been taken at the research reactor FRJ-2 (Dido) at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich. The conversion-electron spectra of80Br and82Br from thermal neutron capture have been measured with the beta-spectrometer at the Grenoble high-flux reactor. Using all these data the level schemes of80Br and82Br are proposed up to 1.5 MeV. Spin assignments for the excited states below 800 keV are proposed. The level schemes are discussed in terms of shell model configurations and, as an alternative description, in terms of the Nilsson model.

Notes: Abstract The search for the two-photon decay of light penetrating bosons (axions or others), produced in a nuclear reactor, was supplemented by measurements with a rotatable set-up at the Jülich 10 MW research reactor FRJ-1. Measurements were performed in “effect” and “background” positions, the latter not allowing the simultaneous detection of both photons due to decay kinematics. Preliminary measurements, carried out at reactor ON condition only, show no positive effect.

Notes: Abstract Precise energies and intensities of about 450γ-rays of the197Au(n, γ)198Au reaction have been investigated in the energy range from 30 keV to 1 MeV with a bentcrystal spectrometer. Prompt and delayedγ-γ coincidences have been studied with Ge(Li) detectors. A half-life of 124±4 ns has been measured for the state at 312.036 keV, which is found to decay to the ground state through the cascade 97.195–214.841 keV. A new level scheme based on these results has been constructed which contains 160 transitions. Spin and parity assignments have been made for most of the levels.

Notes: Abstract Cumulative and independent fission product yields of the reaction197Au(d,f) were determined at a beam energy of 80 MeV at the Jülich isochronous cyclotron. Off-beamγ-ray measurements applying a catcher foil technique and chemical separation, and in inbeam kinetic energy measurements of fission products were performed. The complete yield distribution of post neutron emission fission fragments is represented by a single function, consisting of the product of two Gaussians. The mass distribution is characterized by the widthσ A =12.5amu. The width of theZ-distribution for eachA-chain is given byσ Z =0.63amu.

Notes: Abstract The transitional nucleus152Eu has been studied using the (n, e), (n, γ), (n res,γ), (n, γγ), (d, p), (d, t) and (p, d) reactions. The experiments have been performed at nine different laboratories. A model independent level scheme was established including 95 levels below 510 keV and nearly 900 transitions by combination of low energy transitions and reaction data. More than 20 additional levels result from gamma rays and/or charged particle reactions. The level scheme is interpreted in terms of the Nilsson model indicating that152Eu is a deformed nucleus. Seven rotational bands and Nilsson configurations are established. An additional 27 rotational bands are tentatively or speculatively assugned. Gallagher-Moszkowski splittings are discussed. The neutron binding energy was determined as 6305.2±0.5 keV. The energy of the 9.3 h 0− isomer is 45.599 keV. The lifetimes of four levels were measured.
