Notes: Abstract —Uniaxial compression, triaxial compression and Brazialian tests were conducted on several kinds of rock, with particular attention directed to the principal tensile strain. In this paper we aim to clarify the effects of the experimental environment—such as confining pressure, loading rate, water content and anisotropy—on the critical tensile strain, i.e., the measured principal tensile strain at peak load.¶It was determined that the chain-type extensometer is a most suitable method for measuring the critical tensile strain in uniaxial compression tests. It is also shown that the paper-based strain gage, whose effective length is less than or equal to a tenth of the specimen’s diameter and glued on with a rubber-type adhesive, can be effectively used in the Brazilian tests.¶The effect of confining pressure P C on the critical tensile strain ɛ TC in the brittle failure region was between −0.02 × 10−10 Pa−1 and 0.77 × 10−10 Pa−1. This pressure sensitivity is small compared to the critical tensile strain values of around −0.5 × 10−2. The strain rate sensitivities ∂ɛ TC /∂{log(d|ɛ|/dt)} were observed in the same way as the strength constants in other failure criteria. They were found to be from −0.10 × 10−3 to −0.52 × 10−3 per order of magnitude in strain rate in the triaxial tests. The average magnitude of the critical tensile strain ɛ TC increased due to the presence of water by 4% to 20% for some rocks, and decreased by 22% for sandstone. It can at least be said that the critical tensile strain is less sensitive to water content than the uniaxial compressive strength under the experimental conditions reported here. An obvious anisotropy was observed in the P-wave velocity and in the uniaxial compressive strength of Pombetsu sandstone. It was not observed, however, in the critical tensile strain, although the data do show some variation.¶A "tensile strain criterion" was proposed, based on the above experimental results. This criterion signifies that stress begins to drop when the principal tensile strain reaches the critical tensile strain. The criterion is limited to use within the brittle failure region. The critical tensile strain contains an inelastic strain component as well as an elastic one. It is affected by the strain rate, however, it is relatively insensitive to the confining pressure, the presence of water and anisotropy.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Stercobilin was isolated using a column chromatographic technique, in which alumina of different activity was layered in a adsorption column. The functional equivalent of stercobilin was also isolated chromatographically from rabbit's feces. It was determined as a substance that gives the similar developping pattern on chromatography and the adsorption-spectra to those of mesobiliverdin. The porphyrins were completely separated from those pigments in the present chromatographic systems.

Notes: Objective: As the process of palpation is basically subjective, the scientific evidence for masticatory muscle palpation, especially from an anatomical point of view, is scarce. Our previous study concerning the quantification of masseter muscle deformation during palpation using magnetic resonance imaging and image analysis procedure showed that masseter muscles are deformed and their fascia must be stretched during palpation (Ishikawa et al., Int J Prosthodont, in press). The aim of this study was to further evaluate the deformation/displacement of posterior digastric and sternocleidomastoid muscles during posterior digastric muscle palpation using almost the same procedure as in the previous study. Subjects and methods: Subjects were 10 male volunteers with an average age of 26·8 years. MR images were taken using a 1·5 T scanner (MAGNEX 150 SHIMAZU Co. Ltd, Kyoto, Japan). Images were obtained on the axial plane with a spin-echo, T1-weighted technique using a head coil. At first, non-compressed condition (control) was taken, then the continuously compressed condition of the bilateral posterior digastric muscle region using round plastic balls was taken. By superimposing a compressed image on a non-compressed image, deformation/displacement was subjectively evaluated and measured using free image analysing software (NIH-image). Results and conclusion: Deformation of the bilateral posterior digastric muscle was difficult to identify, however, the average amount of displacement in medial direction was 9·0 ± 5·3 mm. Although we tried to compress posterior digastric muscles, sternocleidomastoid muscles were additionally deformed and displaced. The amount of medial displacement was 9·3 ± 4·7 mm. The values contained in our results exhibited fairly substantial variance. These findings suggest that masticatory muscle palpation is subjective and inconsistent.

Notes: Surfaces of fine polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) powders were modified by exposure to the downstream products of a nitrogen or oxygen microwave plasma. The effects of nitrogen and oxygen incorporation in the powder surface were studied with emphasis on variations in the triboelectric properties of the powder. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was utilized to determine the changes in surface elemental composition. After nitrogen plasma treatment, the C 1s peak shapes suggested the formation of amines in the case of PS, and the formation of imines and amides in the case of PMMA. Oxygen plasma treatment appears to result in the formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups on the surfaces of both PS and PMMA. After treatment with a nitrogen or oxygen plasma, the charge-to-mass ratio (Q/M) of PS and PMMA powders in contact with carrier particles was measured using the cage blowoff method. The surface charge density (Q/A) was calculated from Q/M. The Q/A of nitrogen plasma-treated PS powder was seen to shift towards positive charge with small increases in the nitrogen concentration. The Q/A of oxygen plasma-treated PS powder initially shifted toward negative charge, but changed towards positive charge with higher oxygen concentrations. Plasma-treated PMMA powder showed a different behavior and the variation of Q/A on PMMA was much less than that of PS. Results suggest that triboelectrification of the polymer powder may be related to changes in the electrical surface states, and that nitrogen may act as a group V modifier within the PS surface.

Notes: Summary Cholinergic blockade produced by scopolamine hydrochloride or atropine sulfate was found to disrupt the running behavior of dogs performing in exercise-avoidance test. The quaternized derivatives of these drugs were considerably less effective than the tertiary drugs and methyl atropine was effective only at a dose which was lethal to one of the animals tested.
