    Notes: Summary Proximal myopathy and different types of neuromuscular syndromes are frequently observed in hyperthyroid patients with complicated thyrotoxicosis. Conflicting reports on the changes seen in muscle biopsies range from no abnormalities to muscle necrosis with the fibers being replaced by connective tissue and fat. On the basis of 21 skeletal muscle biopsies from chronic thyrotoxic myopathic patients, coupled with studies in experimentally induced triiodothyronine myopathy in rats, the histological, histochemical, immunofluorescent, and electron-microscopic findings diagnostic for thyrotoxic myopathy are defined. These criteria include: clumping of nuclei, los of cross-striation, vacuolar degeneration, and fatty infiltration of endo- and perimysium, presence of giant mitochondria, increased number of mitochondria, disorganization of contractile elements, swelling of transverse tubules, presence of microtubular aggregations, and a significant increase of lipofuscin granules. Both muscle fiber types or in some cases selective type II fibers display atrophy with signs of reinnervation. These alterations are polyfocal and polyphasic and, therefore, polychronous and stereotyped rather than pathognomonic. However, they are related to the severity of thyrotoxic myopathy and the duration of disease. The results of muscle biopsies have a predictive value in determining the reversibility or irreversibility of pathologic changes with therapeutic consequences.

    Notes: Summary An experimental model of the autoimmune process was developed to study the ultrastructural aspects of immunomyopathies. Every type of muscle fibre organelle was affected and the severity of injury increased in direct proportion to time following immunization. It is suggested that ultrastructural methods are useful in studies concerned with the analysis of structural aspects of experimental immunomyopathies.

    Notes: Summary An experimental model of the autoimmune process was developed to study the pathophysiological and structural changes in immunomyopathies. Immune-sera derived from three muscle proteins—myofibril, myosin and actin—produced immunomyopathies for study. The pathophysiological data show that the general muscle efficiency began to decrease with the early stages of treatment and reflected a severe disorder to muscle function with the progression of time. Parallel changes were also observed by light microscopy.

    Notes: Summary Two cases of McArdle's syndrome are reported. One is a “classical” exaple; the other is unusual because of the in vitro presence of muscle phosphorylase activity. In the latter case. the electronmicroscopic investigation confirmed the diagnosis. The fine structural changes characteristic of this disease are summarized and it is concluded that histochemical studies alone are insufficient to exclude the diagnosis of McArdle's myopathy.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Anhand zahlreicher biologischer Modelle konnten wir nachweisen, daß Laserstrahlen von geringer Energie stimulierend wirken. Als Fortsetzung unserer früheren experimentellen Untersuchungen stellen wir 11 klinische Fälle dar, in denen wir mit Laserstrahlen solche Hautgeschwüre zur Heilung bringen konnten, bei denen die gewöhnlichen langzeitig angewandten Methoden — plastische Operationen inklusive — erfolglos waren. Dieser Laser Effekt beruht — aufgrund unserer bisherigen histochemischen und elektronen optischen Untersuchungen — auf der Stimulation der Kollagen-Synthese infolge eines enzymatischen Prozesses.
    Notes: Summary We studied the stimulant effect of low-energy laser rays on many biological models and we also reported our results in 1968 and 1970 at the Congresses in Munich. As a continuation of the earlier investigations an attempt is made in our present study to give a survey of the results obtained in 11 clinical cases of skin ulcers. In all of them the usual long-term therapies attempted, including plastic surgery, had no effect, and we cured the ulcers by means of laser rays our histochemical and electron-optical investigations suggest that the laser effect is based on stimulation of collagen synthesis resulting from of an enzymatic process.
