    Notes: Summary Of the medical staff of our hospital 217 members at high risk for hepatitis B were immunized with an experimental hepatitis B vaccine and anti-HBs titers used to study the influence of two dosage schedules, age, and sex on immunogenicity. Participants were 34 years of age (mean; range, 20–61); they were divided into two groups and vaccinated three times. Group A received 42 µg HBsAg for each vaccination. Group B received 84 µg for the first and 21 µg for the second and third vaccinations. The seroconversion rate was 32.7% after the first, 78.8% after the second, and 95.7% after the third vaccination. The participants who failed to produce anti-HBs titer (3 IU/l;n=9) or whose anti-HBs titers were below 50 IU/l (n=31) were vaccinated a fourth time. Only mild side effects of injections were observed in a third of all participants, usually in the form of a sore arm. Between groups A and B there were no significant differences as far as the seroconversion rate and anti-HBs titer were concerned. Nonresponders plus low-responders accounted for 19%. Female participants produced a markedly higher anti-HBs titer than males, and the female/male ratio among non- and low-responders was 1:2; among nonresponders, 1:2.5. There was a negative correlation of the anti-HBs titer with the age of the participants. These results not only have practical consequences for revaccination policy, but also offer the opportunity to further study the genetic regulation of the immune response to a complex peptide antigen in man.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the ability of urinary neopterin concentrations and T-cell subset data, and their ratios to discriminate between anti-HIV-1 seronegatives, seropositives, and AIDS cases. Using receiver-operated-characteristics curves, neopterin levels were shown to provide the best discrimination. Of the ratios derived from the single variables, neopterin per CD4+ cell counts and neopterin per CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio were superior to the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio. Multivariate analyses were performed using a generalized likelihood ratio approach as well as linear discriminant analysis. The combination of neopterin concentration and CD4+ T-cell count is well suited to discriminate between various stages of HIV-1 infection and, therefore, we recommend using more than one assay to evaluate disease progression.

    Notes: Abstract A mercapturic acid attached to the aromatic ring of toluene was for the first time detected in human urine as a metabolite of toluene. Since the metabolism of toluene is usually considered to take place at the side-chain, this gives, besides the biosynthesis of cresols, a further hint of a metabolic conversion of the aromatic system. We examined a group of 33 workers occupationally exposed to toluene, determining the concentrations of toluene in ambient air and in whole blood, o-cresol and hippuric acid in urine and p-toluylmercapturic acid (p-TMA) in urine. All blood and urine samples were collected post-shift. The renal excretion of S-p-toluylmercapturic acid showed highly significant correlations with established parameters of a biological monitoring of toluene. The median ambient air concentration was 63 ppm, ranging from 13 to 151 ppm, the median concentration of toluene in whole blood was 804 μg/l, corresponding to median urinary concentrations for o-cresol of 2.3 mg/l, hippuric acid of 2.3 g/l and p-TMA of 20.4 μg/l. p-TMA was not detectable in urine samples of a control group of 10 non-exposed persons. Both the German Biological Tolerance Values (BAT-values) for toluene in blood (1000 μg/l) and o-cresol in urine (3 mg/l) correspond to a mean p-TMA elimination of ∼50 g/l, and thus are in agreement with each other. According to our results p-TMA reflects internal toluene exposure diagnostically sensitive and specifical. With the developed analytical procedure we determined a median benzylmercapturic acid (BMA) concentration of 190 μg/l in the urine samples of the toluene exposed persons. We also determined a median BMA concentration of 30 μg/l in the control samples of non-exposed persons. However, these results are preliminary and require further confirmation as the reliability of the method was determined only for p-TMA.

    Notes: Abstract Genetic counselling in families with congenital hydrocephalus internus (CHI) in combination with aqueduct stenosis (AS) is often difficult due to an uncertain aetiology. We present a series of 35 patients with CHI and AS focusing on the aetiology and presumed recurrence risk for siblings. In 13 patients (37.1%) a genetic aetiology was identified with an increased recurrence risk for siblings. The relative frequency of patients with X-linked hydrocephalus in our sample was in accordance with the literature (2/35), but was more frequent in other diseases with Mendelian inheritance. Conclusion In addition to the well-known X-linked and autosomal recessive forms of aqueduct stenosis with hydrocephalus, this malformation can occur in other diseases with Mendelian inheritance. This finding is of considerable importance for genetic counselling and prognosis.

    Notes: Summary We present here a study carried out on In16Sn4S32 and In16Fe8S32 spinels. Electronic and local environment changes of Sn and Fe are discussed from recorded Mössbauer parameters. In the case of the tin thiospinel, a reduction process from SnIV to SnII is obvious till an amount of 8 inserted Li. For the iron thiospinel a migration of iron atoms from the octahedral to the tetrahedral sites is observed. In the region of higher lithium amounts (10– Li), in both spinels a further environment appears indicating an increase of covalency.

    Notes: The structure of liquid water in contact with a metallic planar wall is calculated for the central force water model which is a stoichiometric mixture of partially charged hydrogen and oxygen atoms interacting via effective spherical pair potentials. The density profiles near the wall are obtained from the Wertheim–Lovett–Mou–Buff equation where the bulk information enters through the direct correlation functions. In this approach image interactions which are characteristic for a metallic boundary, and which cannot be treated as a simple particle–wall interaction are considered within a mean-field ansatz. We discuss the structural properties of the interface layer for both cases, the charged and the uncharged wall, and compare the results to those for an unpolarizable boundary where the image forces have been switched off. The differential capacitance as function of the wall charge is seen to show a characteristic "hump" which can be related to the transition between two possible icelike water structures in front of the wall. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
