Notes: Summary Of 607 women who had undergone conization of the cervix in 1973–1980 in the country of Funen, Denmark, 128 women had completed a total of 166 pregnancies before April 1, 1982. There was apparently no adverse effect of conization on these pregnancies. The frequency of delivery before 37 completed weeks of gestation, of a birthweight less than 2500 g or below the 10th percentile did not differ from that for a population standardized for age and parity. Five women had a second trimester abortion in a pregnancy after conization, but without evidence of cervical insufficiency. Eleven conized women had a caesarean section in a subsequent pregnancy for reasons unrelated to conization.

Notes: Summary In a randomised study of cervical smears after conization, the efficacy of the combined wooden spatula and cytobrush was compared with that of the combined wooden spatula and cotton swab. The conization technique involved a could knife and two Sturmdorf sutures. A total of 75 women participated, 57 had smears taken with both methods. Eigtheen with only one of the methods. Out of 66 taken with a wooden spatula and a cytobrush. 48 (72.7%) contained endocervical cells and 53 (80.3%) contained either endocervical or metaplastic cells. Out of 66 smears taken with a wooden spatula and a cotton swab, only 25 (37.9%) contained endocervical cells and 40 (60.6%) contained endocervical or metaplastic cells. Both differences were significant (P〈0.001 andP〈0.05, respectively). The combined use of a wooden spatula and cytobrush is recommended for cytological smears after conization.

Notes: Abstract Indirect haemagglutination and indirect immunofluorescence tests of sera from 95 patients with acute salpingitis failed to confirm the report of other investigators regarding serological evidence implicating Mycoplasma genitalium in pelvic inflammatory disease. The pathological role of Mycoplasma genitalium in salpingitis, non-gonococcal urethritis, and other diseases has not been proven.

Notes: Summary In order to evaluate a twice daily dosage regimen of bacampicillin a multicenter clinical trial was performed in patients suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). A total of 75 patients were allocated at random to treatment with 800 mg bacampicillin twice daily or 400 mg three times daily for fourteen days (PID). The study was performed double-blind. The therapeutic effect was assessed in 70 patients. The therapeutic response was judged on the basis of clinical symptoms and bacteriology. There was no significant difference in the overall efficacy of the two dosages in the patient groups studied. Good response was obtained in 93% of the patients, and 7% were improved. Gastrointestinal side-effects were infrequent (three cases out of 75). Exanthema occurred in six patients.

Notes: Abstract Background: Different regulators or effectors of the metastatic cascade can be of prognostic and/or predictive significance. Cathepsin-D and nm23 operate at different levels of the metastatic process and have not yet been analyzed in combination in ovarian cancer. Patients and methods: The prevalence of cathepsin-D and nm23 expression was studied with immunohistochemistry in a cohort of 185 previously untreated cases of FIGO stage III ovarian cancer. Correlations with known prognostic factors were examined, and both uni- and multivariate survival analyses were performed. Results: Epithelial cell cathepsin-D expression was found in 58% of cases, stromal cell cathepsin-D expression in 20%, and nm23 expression in 72%. Epithelial cell cathepsin-D expression was positively correlated with better differentiation of the tumor tissue (P = 0.034). No correlation was found between epithelial and stromal cell cathepsin-D expression, but a striking degree of positive correlation was demonstrated between epithelial cell cathepsin-D and nm23 expression (P = 0.005). None of the factors studied was of any value in predicting the response to platinum and anthracyclin combination chemotherapy, as assessed by second look laparotomy. In univariate analysis age, FIGO substage, histological type, differentiation grade, ascites, residual disease and epithelial cathepsin-D were associated with corrected survival. Neither stromal cell cathepsin-D, nor nm23 expression were of prognostic significance. However, in multivariate analysis the combination of epithelial and stromal cell cathepsin-D expression (P = 0.030), residual disease (P = 0.002) and differentiation grade (P = 0.007) were the only remaining independent prognostic factors in this patient group. Conclusions: Our results support a favourable prognostic significance of cathepsin-D expression in advanced ovarian cancer, but underscore the importance of considering both epithelial and stromal cell expression. We could not confirm the prognostic significance of nm23 expression in the present cohort of advanced ovarian cancer patients.
