Notes: Summary A three-dimensional network containing oriented filaments of polyacrylic acid can be obtained by heating mechanically stressed foils of this substance, containing some glycerol and some sulfuric acid. Those filaments, if suspended in water, swell anisotropically. They contract and dilate reversibly upon alternating addition of small amounts of acid and alkali to the medium in which they are suspended.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents This paper presents a hybrid simulation model for converter-fed ac-drives with linear and rotating induction motors. To improve stability and accuracy both analog and digital circuits are used in the model, which is capable of realtime simulation. A microprocessor controls the setting of the systemparameters. It is shown how the model is constructed and what experiences are made with its performance.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Disseminicrte intravasculäre Gerinnsel bei perinatal verstorbenen Kindern werden häufig beobachtet.
Notes: Summary Disseminated intravascular fibrin depositions (DIC) are frequently seen in infants dying in the perinatal period. Shock, hypoxia and acidosis seem to be of pathological significance. A relation between the occurrence of DIC in the newborn and maternal disease and/or obstetrical complication is only rarely observed. 1. It was studied whether an early state of DIC in the newborn could be detected. The presence of fibrin monomeres was evaluated in cord blood by the ethanol test (Godal and Abildgaard). 2. 32 apparently healthy newborns and 18 newborns showing signs of asphyxia were examined. In the group of asphyctic infants, fibrin monomeres were move frequently observed in cord blood. The difference to healthy newborns was statistically significant. The occurrence of fibrin monomeres seemed to be related to the duration of shock, hypoxia and acidosis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Häufigkeit intravasculärer Mikrothromben bei perinatal verstorbenen Neugeborenen veranlaßte die folgende Untersuchung.
Notes: Summary The high incidence of intravascular fibrin deposits in stillbirths and newborns dying in the perinatal period prompted us to undertake the following study. High molecular weight derivatives of fibrinogen were identified in native plasma and in plasma after 2.5 M β-alanine precipitation by PAA gel electrophoresis and intra-gel immunoprecipitation. Two components were observed which migrated more slowly than fibrinogen. Their relative electrophoretic mobilities were: 0.17 and 0.27 (fibrinogen: 0.43)×10−5 cm2/V×sec. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in gels of different pore size indicated a higher molecular weight than that of fibrinogen for both components. The derivatives described were found in cord vein plasma samples of asphyctic newborns. Their occurrence was accompanied by a positive ethanol test, by a statistically significant decline of platelets and fibrinogen and by signs of fetal distress.

Notes: Summary The angiotensin I converting enzyme activity (kininase II, EC 3.4.15.1) was measured fluorimetrically in cerebrospinal fluid (CACE) of 154 patients with neurological disorders and 27 controls. The concentrations of total protein, albumin, and immunoglobulins G and A were also determined. There was no correlation between CACE and sex or age, but a slight positive relation between CACE and total protein and an inverse correlation between CACE and albumin were observed. Compared to controls, significantly elevated CACE was found in acute untreated CNS sarcoidosis (P〈0.0001), followed by viral encephalitis, CNS syphilis, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis (P〈0.001). In treated CNS sarcoidosis, only a minor increase of CACE was observed (P〈0.05). The determination of CACE can be used for the diagnosis of neurological disorders.

Notes: Abstract In the last few years, the genetic contribution to Parkinson’s disease has gained major attention and resulted in the identification of four gene loci in autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive Parkinson’s disease. Several mutations in two genes have been shown to be responsible for neuronal cell death in Parkinsons’s disease. One of the gene products involved, α-synuclein, is a major component of Lewy bodies, the neuropathological feature of Parkinson’s disease. In contrast, mutations in the parkin gene are associated with parkinsonism without Lewy body pathology. The elucidation of polygenic changes in the dopamine pathway, mitochondrial dysfunction, and of xenobiotic metabolism is technically now possible by means of association and genotype studies. The increasing knowledge of the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease at a molecular level will have important implications for the development of individual therapeutic strategies to prevent disease progression.

Notes: Summary Calculations indicate that the maximum daily solar radiation reaching the Martian surface is about 325 cal/cm2 during southern hemisphere summer at latitude of about 40°S. In the ultraviolet region of the spectrum, the radiation reaching the surface at wavelengths greater than 2800 Å is within 10% of the radiation incident on the atmosphere. There is significant extinction of radiation in the spectral region near 2500 Å in mid and high latitudes due to absorption of radiation by ozone; radiation reaching the surface may be reduced to one one-thousandth of that incident on the atmosphere during winter. Virtually no radiation of wavelengths less than 1900 Å reaches the surface because of absorption by the large column abundance of carbon dioxide. Daily and latitudinal distributions of radiation are presented for wavelengths of 3000, 2500 and 2000 Å.
