Notes: Various Si and Ge rectifier diodes are tested at frequent intervals of γ-radiation doses for changes in ideality factor η and minority carrier lifetime τ. Although both parameters are well known to decrease with dosage, here they are probably for the first time measured to also subsequently increase, decrease, increase, etc., at higher dosages. Examination of diodes in vacuum prior to and following even modest irradiation levels indicates experimentally that noticeable changes in surface properties have been induced by the irradiation. Such experimental techniques permit greater insight into the basic structure of surface phenomena long suspected to play a significant role in diode changes brought about by nuclear irradiation. Utilization of such surface changes leads to a broad general concept to explain the reversals and changes in the dosage dependences of η and τ in terms of bulk versus surface effects.

Notes: Summary The number of pneumoencephalographic and myelographic X-ray examinations is decreasing every year. The steady increase, not only of cerebral angiographies and radionuclide brain scanning, but also of the corresponding neuroradioisotope procedures of cisternography and myeloscintiphotography, are responsible for this trend. Neuroradioisotope (NRI) procedures allow for more efficient functional examinations than the corresponding neuroradiological X-ray methods (NRX). The signficance of NRI as screening tests is manifest. — Some technical specifications are given regarding the signal-to-noise problem. Tables indicate some characteristics of the new radioactive agents: 169Yb DTPA and 111In DTPA and their radiation dosimetry for the brain, the spinal cord and the whole body. — The diagnostic possibilities of NRI have caused the techniques to be altered. The most innocuous methods must be used at first, and if, as usually happens, these are morphologically adequate and functionally better suited, the most cumbersome become unnecessary.

Notes: Abstract Studies intended to optimize the production of Na18F, in aqueous solution following irradiation of organic fluorine compounds with 14 MeV neutrons are described. The use of Szilard-Chamers conditions was chosen to enhance the yield of18F, given the low fluxes available and the inherently low cross section of the (n, 2n) reaction. Twenty five potential target compounds were tested. The most suitable one, both in terms of the cost of the target material and of the efficiency of production of water-soluble Na18F, was found to be perfluoro n-hexane. A simple production method for18F− is outlined.
