Notes: Summary Encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) was done in 16 Japanese children with Moyamoya disease on 22 sides. The results were evaluated clinically, angiographically, and by positron emission computed tomography (PET). Postoperative external carotid angiograms showed a good collateral circulation through EDAS in 72 percent of the treated sides. Two-thirds of the sides examined by PET showed improvement in cerebral blood circulation, particularly at the surgically-treated cortex. Postoperatively the symptoms disappeared in those with good new collateral formation. TIA, RIND, and/or involuntary movement disappaered in 31 percent and partially so in 44 percent 6 months after EDAS. The TIA in the lower limb and/ or involuntary movement persisted in some children. This surgical approach seems applicable particularly for children with the ischaemic type of Moyamoya disease, however, the procedure also has drawbacks. Development of collateral circulation was insufficient in some cases, and the territories of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) or posterior cerebral artery (PCA) were often not covered, even in those with a good new collateral formation in the middle cerebral arterial (MCA) area.

Notes: Summary The clinical features of 6 children who are probable sufferers of “unilateral” Moyamoya disease are here reported. They showed angiographic findings which were compatible with those of Moyamoya disease, albeit only on one side. They did not, however, show any basic aetiologic factors. The age of onset, the clinical symptoms and the findings of electroencephalography, angiography, and positron emission tomography in these cases were also quite similar to those in the cases of Moyamoya disease except for unilateral involvement. All 6 patients underwent either direct or indirect EC-IC bypass sugery. In 3 children who received encephalo-duro-arteriosynangiosis, an indirect bypass procedure, the collateral circulation was well formed postoperatively. In the follow-up study, 2 of the 6 cases starting with a unilateral lesion developed bilateral involvement later. However, the other 4 cases persisted in showing only unilateral involvement. These 4 cases may suggest the existence of “unilateral” Moyamoya disease in the paediatric age, and it is recommended that such cases be treated similarly to those of bilateral Moyamoya disease.

Notes: This paper presents the results of PL spectrum studies for Si nano-crystallites embeddedin amorphous silicon matrix. Investigated layers were deposited by the hot-wire CVD method onglass substrates at the wafer temperature 300°C and different filament temperatures from the range1650-1950°C. It was shown that variation of temperatures of filament (hot-wire) allows to producethe films with desirable parameters. Using of X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence methods thecorrelation between some photoluminescence bands and the sizes of Si nano-crystallites as well asthe amorphous phase volume was shown. The nature of light emission is discussed

Notes: Summary Oxytocin was measured in maternal and fetal plasma, amniotic fluid and neonatal plasma and urine using a specific radioimmunoassay, following extraction procedures with Florisil. Maternal oxytocin levels rose progressively with advancing gestation, but there were no significant differences between oxytocin levels around the onset of labor. No diurnal rhythm of oxytocin was evident in maternal plasma during the third trimester. Maternal and umbilical plasma oxytocin levels at spontaneous delivery were significantly higher than those at elective cesarean section. Maternal oxytocin levels in four cases of post-term delivery were lower than those during normal late pregnancy; all four cases exprerienced uterine inertia. All amniotic fluid samples had detectable oxytocin levels and there were no significant differences between oxytocin levels in the second trimester and those in the third trimester. Oxytocin levels in neonatal urine were higher than levels in amniotic fluid and lower than in the umbilical artery. Neonatal plasma oxytocin levels gradually decreased and oxytocin levels of 7-day-old infants were significantly lower than those in the umbilical artery, but higher than those in adults. In conclusion, it appears that maternal oxytocin levels may not be involved in triggering the onset of labor but may play a role in the maintenance and reinforcement of labor.

Notes: Summary A verified case of duplicate origin of the left vertebral artery in association with a large aneurysm arising from the aortic arch immediately distal to the left subclavian artery is presented. An anomalous left vertebral artery arises directly from the aortic arch between the left common carotid and subclavian arteries, and joins with the normal left vertebral artery in the transverse foramen of the fifth cervical vertebra.

Notes: Summary Inhibitory mechanisms of erythropoiesis in 20 patients with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) were investigated using the technique of in vitro hematopoiesis and an assay for human parvovirus. Complement-dependent serum inhibitors against late erythroid progenitors (CFU-E) were demonstrated in seven of 19 patients examined, and complement-dependent inhibitors against early erythroid progenitors (BFU-E) were demonstrated in three of these seven patients. Nonspecific and complement-independent inhibitors against CFU-E were thought to be associated with the etiology of PRCA in one patient. Human parvovirus-mediated erythropoietic suppression was demonstrated in a patient with complete remission of acute lymphoblastic leukemia complicated with marrow erythroid aplasia, whose serum showed a perfect inhibition against erythroid progenitor cells. T-cell-mediated erythroid suppression was not demonstrated in the patients examined. These findings reveal that erythroid aplasia is associated with complement-dependent serum erythropoietic inhibitor in some patients (36.8% in the present study) with PRCA, but it is difficult to identify the mechanism of erythroid aplasia in more than half of the patients with PRCA. In addition, our present study discovered the presence of parvovirus-mediated marrow pure red cell aplasia in one adult patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
