    Notes: Special electronic scanning circuits have been built to increase the resolution time of an intensified photodiode array assembly used for detecting EUV emission. The system can operate at 1-MHz sampling rate to provide data readout on two parallel output lines. The scanning time of a 1000-element array can be reduced to 500 μs. The system is programmable and can function sequentially at three different frequencies within a single scan. The device is CAMAC compatible and operated remotely by computer. It has been used to record spatial as well as temporal development of EUV radiation from the TEXTOR tokamak plasma.

    Notes: SODA which stands for Système d'Organisation des Données et d'Analyse, is a general database for TdeV. SODA has the following goals: to produce a database of a reduced set of physical data; to ensure that these data are validated; to record all the parameters relevant to tokamak operation and experiments; to facilitate the retrieval of data using given selection criteria; and to improve data accessibility and analysis. The relational database ORACLE™ has been chosen to provide flexibility and to accommodate the increasing expectations of the TdeV researchers. In-house expertise allows custom-made tables and centralized data management. In the process of creating SODA several new interfaces for the scientific coordinator, machine operator, and diagnosticians have been added to provide a better definition of the experiment for the archiving system. The database includes the more relevant machine and diagnostic parameters, plasma perturbations (rf, biasing, gas...), mean and standard deviation of physical signals, plasma profiles, and code results (equilibrium...) for selected time windows in a discharge. Users of the X-window interface of SODA are not required to know the database structure or the SQL language. SODA has been operating successfully for over a year and its capabilities are continuously expanding. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This study presents a technique for measuring shapes of three dimensional surface cracks continuously during fatigue crack growth. The technique uses a laser interferometric system to measure crack compliance and a photomicroscopic system to measure surface crack length. Using a compliance expression for surface cracks, valid for the range of crack aspect ratios (a/c) of 0.2 to 2.0, aspect ratio calculations employing compliance and surface crack length measurements are demonstrated for cracks growing from EDM notches of different geometries (shallow or deep). The experimentally determined aspect ratio variations during cyclic crack growth are shown to be in good agreement with the expected variations in aspect ratio, predicted using the stress intensity factor equations for surface cracks. The effects of deviations in the compliance measurement location from the center of the surface crack due to assymetric crack growth are also accounted for through corrections of compliance measurements for crack-asymmetry. The fatigue crack growth rates of surface cracks, after incorporating the variations in aspect ratio in the calculations, agreed with the large-crack growth data for all crack geometries.

    Notes: Abstract Increasingly accurate life prediction models are required to utilize the full capability of current and future advanced materials in gas turbine engines. Of particular recent interest are predictions of the lifetimes of engine airfoil materials that experience significant intervals of high-frequency, high-cycle fatigue (HCF). Conventional life management practices for HCF in the turbine engine industry have been based principally on a total-life approach. There is a growing need to develop damage tolerance methods capable of predicting the evolution and growth of HCF damage in the presence of foreign object damage (FOD), low cycle fatigue (LCF), and surface fretting fatigue. To help identify key aspects of the HCF life prediction problem for turbine engine components, a review is pressented of the extensive results of an Air Force research contract with Pratt & Whitney on the high strength titanium alloy Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V. Data from this representative turbine-airfoil material are used to examine the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics methods for prediction of service lifetimes under load spectra that include high cycle fatigue. The roles of fatigue crack initiation and growth are examined for materials that are nominally-defect-free, as well for materials that have experienced significant prior structural damage. An assessment is presented of the potential utility of the conventional threshold stress intensity factor range, ΔK th, defined by testing specimens containing large cracks. Although the general utility of a large-crack-ΔK th approach is questionable due to the potentially rapid growth of small fatigue cracks, the low allowable stresses involved in turbine engine high cycle fatigue appear to limit and simplify the small-crack problem. An examination is also presented of the potential effects of high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue (HCF/LCF) interactions.

    Notes: Abstract An automated interferometric displacement gage was used to monitor crack-mouth-opening behavior of naturally initiated small surface cracks in a series of titanium alloys having a range of microstructures and deformation characteristics. Findings indicate that the transient development of crack closure plays a significant role in the early propagation of small fatigue cracks.
